I fly an Aurora 9, but if you are on a really tight budget, here you go. Use your old switch, maybe some fresh batteries, and your old servos should work. These radios are used around the world and appear to function quite well, probably less than $80.00 delivered from their USA warehouse...

http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/s...arehouse_.html
How do you find the Aurora 9 2.4 is for programming compared to other units?
I want to step up from my JR XP 7202 & Hitec Eclipse 7 to get into the 2.4 technology.
I will still keep and use the old 72's but have acumilated several toys that fly in the 2.4 range.

I also want to be able to replace the toy type of tx units that came with my 2.4 toys and use a full function tx like the Aurora 9 or the Eclipse 7 Pro etc.

Your thoughts?

you can get a Dx5 for $49 if you work at it, but it only does on plane.

Good price but I do Planes, Helis, Quads, wanna be tri 's (lol) foamies trucks, cars, rockets and other fun stuff. So I
need at least 7 channels. I dont mind spending it if the value is there. I try to get by on what I can but get tired of
needing or wanting to upgrade every couple of years.

Toywizard No Worries

I will try to answer your question with what imput I can. Have been using the Aurora now since its first release and now I bought a second. My Hitec 2.4 Rx count is just over fifty now with around forty five installed and flying. Also I do have the full telemetry system in use in one airplane (my cross country ship) .

I started tentively 2.4 with XPS in an old JR 10SX Prior to this I used three Prism 7x's and three Eclipse 7's along with the lonely old JR.

With hitec's release of their system I deactivated my five ships with XPS systems and my intent was to slowly add the Hitec well the system worked so well that, all went by the wayside and I completely converted my entire fleet in under two years.

Now the A9's are quite an adventure and I am finding much of the programing and capabilitys seem to run similar to the Futaba 12FG. My buddy who uses that system and I have worked together with the two systems and can see many paralells.

We were both especially interested in the buddy cord systems in each and both are light years ahead in what they both can do. Actually the 12FG had one advantage there in that it can use the cordess buddy cord and that is a hugh advantage. That is my one regret that Hitec has no such system.

If you get an A9 don,t even think about not also getting the HPP 22 which allows you to store airplanes on your home computer for quick recovery and therefore you are not limited to the thirty plane storage. Also the HPP 22 is a must for updating your receivers, modules and the A9 or Eclipse Pro as they become avaliable.

Its also for this reason I recommend using either the seven or nine channel Optimas as they can be updated at home with the 22. The seven channel rx's must be sent in.

Hope this helps

John

Im a Futaba guy through and through....As it is now I won't change....but since your post said you wanted to fly the smaller stuff then get a Spektrum so you can use the bind-n-fly aircraft....or you can get a Futaba and the new gadget on the market that lets you fly the bind-n-flys...but that's not on a budget

Agreed. A lot of great choices out there, too. The BNF is nice if you have a lot of models. I am really not brand loyal. I have Futaba and I fly mostly Spektrum only because I have quite a few receivers and have not crossed over to anything else. Is it better than Futaba? I would state that the major radio brands are all good.

Some of the new entries on the market are most appealing. I see guys flying those cheap HobbyKing radios and never having an issue and the price is amazing. I would not go that route on my more expensive planes. If they prove themselves, then what can you say? I do have several of the HK Orange receivers for my beater planes.

Once I switched to 2.4 I was amazed and really appreciate that technology. I like model matching, too. What a fantastic feature. Also, flying so many planes from one receiver now - a very nice feature! Today's technology is super great for us RC guys [8D]

My advice is that if you like Futaba go for it. If you like Spektrum go for it and so forth. If you like Aurora go for it. What ever does what you need and "floats your boat" you should go for

I agree with the BNF , I have saved about $150 with my JR radio. If you look at the new dx8 or dx7s, they are around $270 and if you can save like I have on the BNF stuff its a great deal.

I have said this before and I will say it again. There are several manufacturers out there that make great products. It comes down to a personal choice.

Most beginners, and since this is a beginners forum, will usually follow what their instructors use or point out to them. In my case, my instructor was a big Airtronics fan. So, my first two radios were both Airtronics. I still have them and use them, however, I moved to Spektrum when the DX7 first came out and now own a DX6i and a DX7 as well as my two Aitronics.

I also have a Futaba basic four channel radio that came with an RTF model.

Somewhere in the back room is another radio that came with an electric model that I used for a while and retired both the plane and the radio. I think it is a Turnigy. It worked fine for what it was designed for.

The "pro's" that win events at such places like the AMA events every year, fly different radio systems. They swear that the particular radio that they were using was one of the main reasons they won. Most are sponsored by a major supplier... JR, Futaba, Airtroncs, and so on.. I'm sure you get the picture here.

Since I've been around, it seems that the events have been won by people using all sorts of radio equipment and swear that it was the best on the market. My point is, well, it was their skills that won regardless of what radio they were using.

My point is that if you decide on any of the major radio systems, by Airtronics, Futaba, JR, Spektrum, Hitec, or whatever, if it suites your purposes, then what is wrong with that? At some point, as you gain RC experience, you will most likely decide what radio system meets your needs and stick with that.

A lot of folks here will swear that their radio is the best on the market. I'm sure it is. Futaba folks like Futaba. Airtroncs folks like Airtroncis. Hitec folks like Hitec. And so on. Get the idea here?

Get what you can afford, but as suggested, get the best you can afford, and go fly with it.... and enjoy it!!! Do your research, pick the radio you want and need, then go out and enjoy the hobby.

I struggled with that choice a while back. I wanted telemetry if I could get it, and I figured I may get into full house sail planes.

A9 was on my short list, but I eventually went DX8.

Things that led me that direction: bind and fly planes, cheap orange rx's for little foamies, telemetry. I also like the vibration alert with the telemetry, and the Sd card. Nice to back up models, updates, and a buddy can e-mail their program. I also like their power safe line of receivers.

I do wish it had more mixes or flight modes, though.

Thanks everyone for your great suggestions, I order a set of crystals for my old contender. But I am looking in to the Spektrum
Radio, Thinking of the DX6I. Will this also allow me to bind and fly? Also I do not understand mode 1 only and mode 2 only mean?

I have a DX6i and love it.

Mode 2 is throttle and rudder on the left stick, elevator and aileron on the right stick.

thanks all for the input. I just ordered a DX7s. I know it will bind with the toys I fly/crash and has some potential for future 2.4 projects. I still
have my two 72's to fly all my other stuff. I can also compare the DX7s to my Hitec 7 and JR XP7202 for quality and functions.

Thank you all again for your experiences.

you will be happy with that radio, don't think you can go wrong with it. I have the X9303 2.4 , but from what I have seen of the dx7s I would be happy with it.

That is a good point. If I would have gone A9, everyone in my group is Specktrum or Futaba. Nobody could really help me if I had a problem with programming.
