wow, i just went through break in today and my plane looked like someone cooked bacon on it! let me first say that the O.S. 46 AX is a sweet motor. it came to life instantly and did not give me one problem all day. i have broken in rc car engines but i never expected a mess like i had today. i started at the manufacturers suggested needle settings but leaned it out bit each tank i ran. considering i could barely see Homer in the cockpit from all the oil i figured it was plenty rich for break-in and it was safe to lean out a bit. actualy i couldnt even get it up to temp with those needle settings the first tank, it stayed at about 100 farenheit and it wanted to 4 stroke. after i leaned it out a bit i got it up over 200 -- about 245-250. anything lower and it wanted to start 4 stroking again
my question is- what is an average operating temp for such a motor with an 11x6 prop? and how much do you guys lean it out for normal operation. in other words, how much oil on the plane is normal?

The OS46AX is one of the better engines out there.
If you broke it in as called for in the manual then to get it to run it's best do this:
Close the high speed needle then open it up 2 full turns and start the engine. Let it warm up on idle for a minute then take it to full throttle. Now start to lean the needle about 1/8 turn at a time. When doing this turn it 1/8 and wait a few seconds for the engine to settle in then turn it again 1/8 turn.
Keep doing this until you hear the engine start to stumble. At the point richen it 1/4.
The best way to do this is with a tach. Just lean it to max rpm then richen it by 300 to 500 rpm and you are done.
Once you have the high speed needle done, return it to idle for about 10 seconds then quickly take the throttle to full throttle and listen to the engine. If it transitions quickly and does not stumble then it's fine. If it stumbles and slowly goes to full throttle then lean out the mixture screw 1/8 turn and try it again.
As far as the amount of oil on the plane is concerned that depends on a couple of things. Running it sloppy rich will coat the plane with oil but also the oil content and the type of oil will do this also. IF your fuel has 20% oil then you can bet on alot of oil on the plane even after you tune it.

You'll know if you're overheating the engine. Smoke will come off of it and it will smell like cooked oil. You have to really over-lean this engine before you can hurt it. Adjust it by ear to peak RPM and then back it off a few clicks. The best way to do it is with the airplane pointed straight up. That is the condition in which it is hardest for the engine to draw fuel. When the airplane is level the engine will richen a little bit and all will be well.

By CafeenMan
Ingredients (per heart attack):
Two slices of toast
One fried egg over easy
3 slices of bacon
1 slice petroleum cheese (Kraft singles, et al)
2 tablespoons mayo
Salt and pepper to taste
should be obvious how to put it together. Cheese goes between egg and bacon.
Find a comfortable location to keel over, dial 911, eat sandwich.

I have two OS .46 AX engines. Both were broken in by the manual. I use the A5 OS glow plug in mine. Once set, you generally never have to fool with needle valve. One is on my Tiger 2 and the other on my U Can Do. I run Byron 10% nitro fuel.
Both planes perform great with this engine.
Looks like I fly electric today though. 42 degrees, 7 mph winds but, the field has so much water, looks like the Ohio river ran thru it.
Luckily, I have 50 acre horse farm to fly...just gotta watch out for the manure pile!!!
