Default Hot hot hot!!!!!!!!!

This past week in western PA, its been in the 90's with alot of humidity. Was at the field yesterday from 10 AM til about 12:30 PM.
If you just stood there and did nothing, you were sweating like a pig. I took my Space Walker because I had changed the control rods over to zee bends and threaded clevises. I had to lean out both the low and high needles. It still ran like a pile of ****. Even gave me a deadstick once when on low throttle, the TT Pro .46 quit. I got in 4 flights and packed up and drove the 1.7 miles to the house.
Man, how do y'all who reside in Alabama, Georgia, Texas, Florida, etc. handle the heat and humidity? My engines are tuned for warm weather but not for the blazing heat and humidity. 'bout the only thing to fly in this stuff is electric but then the battery pack will be like nuclear fission.

In OK yesterday, my dad and I were the only two at the field all day. It was hot, but there was about a 15 MPH breeze that kept us from sweating to death. Made flying a few of our planes a little tricky but we managed to go home with everything we took (in the same orietation too!). Take LOTS of water (ICE water) and sun screen. And if all else fails, sit in the truck for about 10 minutes and cool off, then go after it again!

same here in mass. at least a straight week of upper 80's with lots of humidity. it's also hazy, which isn't good for plane visibility

Hot air is thinner, so your engine will actually be rich. Humidity REALLY screws with the mix. Fly early in the morning or late in the afternoon. A bonus to flying in hot, humid air is making a low, fast fly-by and watching the vapor trail off the leading edge of the wings. Cool!

I am in the humid places for sure. It never has been a problem for the engines. They run great. When it is hot, and not humid, then thats not bad because the engines like hot weather (to an extent). The guy at the hobby shop was telling me this. The engines will run at about 200Degrees, without prop wash, but with it they run about 180. Was he right? I don't know. But i think that was interesting.

Art,
Was stationed at Ft. Lewis, I know what you're talking about. The Seattle Rain Festival, Jan 1st - Dec 31st!!!

Flying in heat is something we just learn to deal with here in SW Oklahoma. June - August is 90+ with 100+ nothing out of the ordinary. I usually get out to the field around 7-7:30 the morning, and done flying by noon.

The plus side is that we never really shut down for the winter either. We get flying days throughout the winter, so I never have to put my planes away for the winter.

I was thinking about going to the field this afternoon, but it's just too hot and humid, so I'm sitting inside reading RCU instead

I don't think I ever will quite get used to the heat here in central Texas in the summer, but I keep reminding myself that the hot summers are shorter than the long cold winters back home in Norway and I still can go flying during the summer early in the morning or around 6:30pm when the sun is not so high up in the sky anymore.

Haven't really noticed that the enignes work poorly in the heat/humidity though. Since that's the only condition the engines have experienced, they don't know any better I guess

I'm in Houston !!!!

I fly in the evenings, say after 5:30 or 6:00. The sun is low and there is generally a sea breeze. Even though it was in the mid 90's earlier, high 80's with shade and a breeze feels good to us. And we have the high humidity also. Its like the Gulf of Mexico is peeing on us. The fewer clothes the better. White T-shirt, light shorts and SANDALS. Shoes of any kind are unbearable. They sell a bandanna looking thing that you dip in cool water and wrap around your neck. They are great ! We keep a frig full of ice cold water at the field. Fluids are very important. Go sit in the shade between flights. And Gatoraid . There is nothing wrong with a little sweat as long as you don't let your body dehydrate. If you just resign yourself that you are going to be soaking wet with perspiration, suddenly there are plenty of good flying days. And on the way home, I get ice cream.

As far as engines go. We don't have that bad a problem with them. Scale and cowled engines must be carefully built. But they actually work great. Our density altitude never gets that bad.

I agree with kingwood here. You jsut get used to the hot weather. It might be because i am a kid, but the hot hasn't gotten to me yet. I just try to wear slightly tight shirts, so that i don't have any more cloth on me then needed. a hat helps too.

I also plan to take a gallon of water to the field. (I drink water like a horse)

Edit: Left the r out of shirts...Oops

It was 32C this past Saturday & VERY humid. I noticed a substantial reduction in power with my oldest TT .46 Pro, relative to the 20C-23C temps that I typically fly in.

The high heat, combined with a "fuzzed" prop tip, really took the starch out of my old Florio 40. Normally it will climb straight up at 3/4 throttle on 5% or, 10% nitro fuel. This time it could barely get out of its own way. When I changed the prop (unfortunately the spare was a MAS) & boosted the nitro content to 15%, some of the zip came back & I could just barely get it to go completely vertical at full throttle.

As for myself -- I had enough after two flights.

Here in Yucatan it's been around 105-110ºF at noon, extreme UV index, no breeze and lots, LOTS of "salty" humidity (we're a couple of miles from the beach) and the damn heat stays all day long, last week it was around 85ºF at night [&:]
