Luke21,
My second plane was a Sterling Spitfire with a Super Tigre .75 2 stroke. I had no problems. She flew great. There are some things you should know. Takeoff: Set throttle trim at about half. A bit of right rudder. Power up gradually. Don't take off until the tail comes up and you know you have air speed. Bring throttle trim to full. Climb straight ahead and don't begin turning until you are safely above the ground. Minor bits of rudder input with aileron use will make turns easier. Once in the air, enjoy your twenty minutes or whatever your flight time is. Get used to the plane. Trim it out if you need to. Landing: Line up with the runway. Gradually bleed off power while coming in low to the runway. Bring throttle trim to half. Don't try to make carrier landings. Once the mains touch the ground, cut power, allow tail to set down, pin tail and taxi back. You are never done "Flying" a Warbird until you shut the engine off! My first Spitfire takeoff was a bit wobbly, but I did not panic. I nosed her down a bit, got airspeed and proceeded into the burning wild blue. I love Warbirds and fly them regularly. Good luck!

And I suppose he will be able to remember all of that as the right wing dips then pitches up from extreme panic over correction? Followed by the most beautiful(abeit unintentional) High alpha hover. and the coup de grace, a nice wingtip stall from oh lets just say it makes it 8 feet in the air. only to bury the 4stroke and retracts firmly into the earth, better yet the runway![:@]

Just so you know, I am mid 40s, have almost 2 years in RC planes, have over 10 planes in my hanger, one of which is a TF 1/5 scale P51D Mustang. I will take the next two years to carefully build it. As I do, I will gain ( I hope) some flying savvy, in order to fly this majestic warbird as she deserves. I will buddy box the maiden with an experienced warbird pilot. Oh and if Lukes Spitfire is still around in two years, Id invite him to our Warbird fly in. If not, come and enjoy watching me and the others.

Oh what the heck, its only wood plastic some metal and wires! (yeah, ok)

Luke,
Have you tried to do any of this research on your own? I just did a Google image search on the term "raf spitfire" and came up with about over 1,000 picture of spitfire's and related items.

This is the beginners forum and this probably isn't the best place to find historically correct information on the painting scheme for a RAF Spitfire. You might have better luck asking those types of questions in the [link=http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/forumid_200/tt.htm]RC Warbirds and Warplanes forum here on RCU[/link] . Those guys will probably be able to get you the information you are looking for, or at if not at least they will tell you where to go for it.

Luke21,
First of all, don't let anyone tell you you can't do something. I do highly recommend you spend the dough and buy the Great Planes G3 flight simulator and practice until you can fly the Spitfire and the P-51 proficiently. I have been flying for over 12 years and still practice on my sim all the time. The results are great down the middle of the runway landings, beautiful take offs and fun flying. I wish the flight sim would have been available when I first started. When flying your Warbird, always be ahead of it in your mind. Know what you're going to do next and follow through. Before your first flight Luke, hold your transmitter in your hands and stand behind your Spitfire. Run the entire flight through your mind. This will be nothing fancy. Just a simple takeoff, fly the pattern, then lign up your proach and land. When you do get her into the air and begin flying the pattern, bring her right over the run way several times to get some line up practice. I have flown my little Great Planes F4U Corsair powered by a Saito 65 4 stroke engine in winds in excess of 30 M.P.H. and landed perfectly down the runway. This received applause and cheers from all present. That was at a Warbird fly in about two months ago. This may surprise you, but Rustoleum paint has flat camouflage colors that look just fine on any warbird. Remember to use fuel proof clear coat over your paint job. RCKen is right. You should do some of your own research into this matter. IMPORTANT: Make sure your plane is balanced properly before flying her!

This is for all of you skeptics...Give Him a break!!! Words of encouragement are better than snears and jeers. Wow, if I had listened to this kind of talk, I would have bailed out of this hobby long ago. Sure, it's nice to have help and assistance. However, this may be the only place for this guy to go. This is why I did my first Warbird takeoff alone at the field. I did not want anyone else to be interfeering. Luke has asked for assistance, and that's what I'm doing. I'm not going to be skeptical, because I know it can be done. Come on guys, be positive.

The thing that bothers me the most about these type of threads is that fact that everyone has replied with the sensible advice about the Spitfire (i.e. its NOT a 2nd plane), and then one person comes in and says "Hey, I did it, dont listen to anyone else, its do-able"....and of course the kid listens to the odd one out.

Luke, why do you even post questions like the one you did in the original thread when in reality, you already have an answer in mind, and you're just waiting for one person to confirm it, meanwhile ignoring everyone else and wasting their time. Why do people do this? Posting/asking questions when they already have an answer to their own question.....
Luke is going to ignore what everyone said about holding off on the Spitfire for a few years until he builds up more experience, build his Spitfire, and fly it for a total of 20 seconds.
Let him crash it...like most teens I'm sure he's at that stage where he needs to learn from experience, instead of heeding the advice of much more experienced people, like the people who have kindly posted here.

Btw Luke, it doesn matter what colors you paint it in, it wont last long enough for you to enjoy it.
Oh, one last thing, Luke please improve your punctuation and grammar...its giving a bad image to us younger enthusiasts of the hobby.....

Flak,

I also built a Sterling Spitfire, sooo many years ago and I agree, it was a very forgiving, stable flyer. THAT plane could even be considered a second plane,, it was that good. BUT, as I recall, it had lots of washout in the wing, MUCH enlarged tail surfaces and fixed gear with a wider stance than scale. IF Luke installs retracts in the scale location, he's going to have ground looping problems, especially if this is his first taildragger. I hope Luke is aware of the toe-in and camber and caster that is going to be necessary in the placement of his gear. All I can say is that I'd sure like to be there on the first flight. [:@] Good luck Luke, let us know how you made out.

luke, there are about 50 different varients of a WWII spit color skeam i could think of..... There are probably that many varients in battle of britain colors alone for that matter. You need to figure out what mk. number that spit is, then start researching theatre of operation, squadron, and full scale proto you intend to model. However as spitfire said, if your going to be sa stubborn ass about it and A. destroy the scale look overmotoring it, and B. tear it up trying to fly it to early, dont worry about scale detail(especialy the motor........im cringing at the thought of the butchery to that cowl)

heres an idea.......spend some time making the plane look scale instead of destroying it......

At this point, we should quit trying to help, & sit back & watch -- since he isn't going to listen to anything, except commentary that supports his wishes.

Maybe he will succeed -- I hope so for the sake of the model.

Good luck Luke

Luke, your effort is most likely doomed as many have said but if you insist on trying just be careful and get some help at least. If you like the plane so much, don't be so eager to destroy it.

BTW - wont is spelled WANT, as in "we just want to help you if you would just let us". The other meaning of wont is: "You won't be able to fix it afterward".

Good luck.

Luke a lot of people have gave you some good advice and i hope you listen to what they are saying. I gotta ask how old are you? I left school in 1989 and have to say that one thing i learnt in school was how to spell. I bet the reason why you cannot spell is that you think you know better than all your teachers too. Please do not fly the spit until close to christmas, I will be flying home to england to visit my family and i would love to see how quick you can turn that plane back into a kit (box of sticks, toothpicks) Luke please use the spell check it is a pain sometimes trying to read what you are trying to say.
