in on or around 1986, i was thinking of doing the rc flying, but at the time it was very expensive and time consuming for a teenager. of course now its a bit easier to do with the arf technology and all. but i was thinking of that first time in a hobby store, with my buddy, and wondering aloud how one would learn to fly without crashing..... and over to the side, listening in a touch, was a gentleman i would say in his early 60's, and he said.." its not if your going to ever crash, its just when." that has stuck with me all these years, almost 20 to be exact, and they are learned knowledge that i let talk me into my first plane about 3 years ago, and im glad i listened, cause let me tell you, especially being self taught how to fly, THERE WILL BE CRASHES...........SEVERAL OF 'EM. one thing ive really learned, is repair
. I was wondering if there were any other bits of wisdom that everyone remembers and what really got them going as far as flying the radio control.
my bit of wisdom: BITE OFF MORE THAN YOU CAN CHEW...people tend to overrate it. (that goes for anything)

Seems we've both been thru the same thing or darn near close! I bought a RC set up way back in the late 70's and things have changed alot! I never used the stuff but sold it since I found out just how expensive it was. Now being older and having more cash at hand I got back into it and enjoy repairing and flying!

Easy for me to go down memory lane...the road isn't very long.

Something I borrowed from a group called "The Chicken Little Airforce", thier motto: "We never fly when the sky is falling" or depending on the company..."Shut up and fly!!!"

I started out on my own.........crashing is the best thing you can ask for........when your teaching your self.
Mine flew away.......all that money, time, and money flew away. I was left with a transmiter.
So more time and money was spent, but this time I went to a flying field and some one trained me to fly.
The crashing was pleasure.

Well, one way to look at a "fly away" is that, "well I built that baby nice a straight", get a tad bit expensive though (loss of radio gear)

I recall a couple of things, 1st and RCKEN uses it also..."The take off is optional, but the landing is MANDATORY" 2nd "What goes up most come down..Your job is to control the rate of descent and direction of travel"
Both have served me well after 3+ years my airforce is still intact. Welcome to the hobby!

well, the reason for no instructor, is that i am sort of out in the middle of nowhere, the nearest field, which i do go to sometimes, is about 40 miles away, and one knows, that if there is no wind here, in 40 miles it could be 40 mph. i spent some time in the usmc (8 years), and had the opprotunity to watch and fly in several fixed wing and rotary wing aircraft, just was in the right place at the right time sometimes, and i loved it, even though i am not a pilot. when i was younger, i met Greg Boyington and Chuck Yeager, and alot of other pilots that are not as well known as they are, and i always admired them. so, about 3 years ago, i stopped into a hobby store, and there were planes you could buy ready to fly, and from there, i am here. the lucky thing, there is a little cut out in a field about a half mile from my house where i got permission to build a little airfield, its a little tight with the forest around, but it is great ( and yes, i have retrieved a plane from an 80' tree, and it sucked). im currently very taken by my Hangar 9 corsair, and try to fly it regularly. there are dings here and there, and there is a fixed rudder, and a new wing, and the cowl could use some work, BUT ITS GREATTTTTTTTTT!!!!!
another great tidbit of wisdom DONT FLY WHEN ITS FOGGY, IT WONT LOOK COOL!!!!
