It's nearly impossible to remove them from the wood of the plane. Your best bet is to simply cut them off flush with the wood and cut a new hinge slot next to the old one. More often than not when you try to dig out old CA hinges you'll cause more damage to the wood of the plane. It's not impossilbe to do, but very very difficult to do. IMHO it's just not worth the effort to try and dig out the old hinge.

when you say cut a new hinge slot next to the old one will that mean the hinges will be lapped beside each other on the half of the hinge i couldnt remove? or do i go above or below the old hinge slot with the new one? also whats the best way to cut a new slot like that?

Go next to the old hinge. You don't want to go above or below because you will be off the centerline of the surface.

IMHO the best way to cut hinge slots is with the [link=http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXK263&P=ML]Great Planes Slot Machine[/link]

If I were going to cut CA hinges off and re-hinge, I would go with Robart Hinge Points and just drill right where the old hinge was.

I went to using Robart hinge points and bought this package from my LHS, it includes a drill jig and bushing.

i have (had) the blue type flat hinges in the rudder so you guys are saying to drill a hole and replace them with the tube hinge point type hinges? instead of the flat blue ca type hinges?

That would be an easy fix.
You can cut new slots and install new CA hinges or even dig the old ones out and re-use the old slots. I have done it myself.
To dig the old hinge out, work the blade of your hobby knife (use a new sharp #11 blade) along each side of the hinge staying as close to the hinge as possible, Don't try to go too deep, carefully pry the old hinge out with the tip of your knife. Once you get it loose enough it will pop right out. Test fit the new hinge and rung your knife through the slot as needed to get a good snug fit. It would help to drill a small hole in the center of the slot to help the CA wick in.
If you dig the old hinge out you have to be carefull not to damge the structure but can be done if you are carefull.
If you are carefull the worst that is likely is you get the slot too wide in which case you can go to a wider type epoxy hinge or fill the slot with epoxy and use one of the other suggestions.

ok been working this afternoon on removing my old hinges got them all out, but one of the gaps is quiet a bit wider than the others can you glue 2 hinges together to make it fit tighter or what else can be done to fill in the width ive got great planes 3/4 x 1 ca hinges and radio south blue ca hinges but the size is not on the pack .......also when applying c a do i also use the accelerant or just c a alone?

One of the problems you encounter with this is removal of the old hinges and placement of new ones. I had to do this on my Tiger 60 as I 've talked about in previous posts. As Minnflyer said, the best way is to just take a razor or a sharp (new) exacto knife and cut the old ones and remove the control surface. Take the razor or exaco knife and trim the remnants of the hinge to the surface so none of the old hinge is in the way to intefere with the movement of the surface.

Next.. cut new slots. Not over the old ones, but in a location that will keep the control surface where it belongs, centered on the wing/vert/horiz stabs.. whatever.. in both the surface and the stab/wing as approporate.

Follow the normal method of insstalling the hinges. Minnflyer has discussed the best way to install CA hinges in previous threads, so I won't go into that. But I will say.. do not... ever... never... apply the CA twice. Do the application as required ( "several drops" ) on one side, turn it over and apply on the other side. Then STOP. DO NOT re-apply CA a second time. Once is good. Twice is very bad.

Good luck.

I think it would be too much.
I have an OS 70 FS 4 stroke in mine, I wouldn't go any bigger than an about an OS 55 AX in a 2 stroke engine for that airframe.
I am assuming it is the Great Planes ARF?

yes its the great planes arf......ive never had a 4 stroke engine before, would you reccomend it over a 2 stroke? also how about the 75ax in a alpha 60 trainer?

The 75 in the Alpha 60 would be a great match.
I personaly prefer 4 strokes, they say once you fly a 4 stroke you can never go back
But for that airplane both a 2 or 4 stroke will work well.
Be carefull to keep your speed up on landing, this plane is a bit snappy. Test your stall speed up high so you know what to expect.

you can always use the throttle to control the engine. I don't know...i think that's what the throttle stick was design for.
You're ganna go through the trouble of hooking up a servo to the carb and dial it in and stuff..you might as will use it.lol
How do think guys get trainers to torque roll ?
You can also change prop size ...I don't know, that's what a the hobbie store was built for.

Just don't do evasive manuvers at great speed.lol

Here's some differences between four strokes and two strokes

Four stroke
Cons
-More expensive
-More maintenance
-Less powerful per capacity
-Much poorer power to weight ratio
-Can be harder to operate than two strokes

Pros
-Lower fuel consumption
-Quieter
-Can run a much bigger prop
-Fit better and look better in most scale planes
-Sounds cool, very scale like
-More low end torque than two strokes

Two stroke
Cons
-Higher fuel consumption
-Noisier when propped for very high rpm or inadequately silenced
-Peakier power curve

Pros
-Inexpensive
-Wider selection
-Robust
-Powerful for capacity
-Excellent power to weight ratio
-Can run high rpms

That is completely true but when dealing with an ARF it may not have the strucural integrety to handle a larger than recommended engine, You can beef up the airframe adding weight that will raise the already high stall speed of the Cap 580, (not to mention the added weight of the engine)

Messy? they are about the same, you are burning the same fuel.
A warning on that Cap 580, it can be a hand full and I would not fly it until at least your 3rd maybe 4th plane and that includes at least one prior low wing tail dragger.

About 3" and it has kind of stopped for now, we are suppose to get more later but from reports not much more. The storm tracked farther north than expected.
