My club sounds a lot like yours. "Any of the experienced pilots can take you up", "you'll know when your ready to solo", etc.

At least I know I'm not ready. But, it seems that there are less and less pilots offering to buddy box. I'm really feeling the urge to just start doing my own thing... it's frustrating always having to go "beg" someone to help take off and land....</span></span>

Our club has a written training program. It is not a complicated program.

To attain the level of Qualified Pilot, a student must successfully demonstrate, in the presence of one (1) Club Instructor Pilots, jointly or separately, his ability to:
1. Comprehend all Club rules and regulations.
2. Range check radio system prior to flight.
3. Perform pre-flight check of aircraft.
4. Then:
a. Start aircraft in a safe manner.
b. Taxi aircraft to correct end of runway while observing status of all other fliers (optional for electric powered models and models without ground handling abilities).
c. Take off in a safe manner.
d. Fly a distance equal to two (2) lengths of the runway, maintaining constant altitude and heading.
e. Demonstrate one (1) Horizontal Figure Eight.
f. Land, in the correct direction on the runway.
g. Demonstrate the safe return of the aircraft to the pit area.
NOTE: These exercises may be demonstrated in any order, at the student's discretion.

You helped a newbie out. That does not mean you are the instructor by default. You were the "trim guy" or maybe a very helpful spotter.

The guy who lost his plane took responsibility for flying it solo. The crash is all on him. He took control of his plane and couldn't handle it.

While the crash was definitely on the "student", there were many warning signs that should have prompted a discussion. Trouble taxiing? A solo pilot asking for help? When I encounter a situation like this, Iassume the person can't fly. If he can, then great but Iask if they have a trainer cord. If not, I start from scratch. Look over the plane, controls, etc. Then I ask if they want me to try and help them fly it and get a clear understanding of what will happen if they get in trouble. Finally, Imake it clear that they asked me for help and that Iwill do everyhthing Ican to keep their plane in one piece but if something happens, I'm not responsible for the damage to the plane.

At any point in the flight it appears they are out of control, Iattempt to take control (having told them up front I would do this). A nervous pilot will almost always hand over control when you ask for it.

Good topic. Again, I don't think you did anything wrong, Ijust would have done some things different. By the way, Ifly at public field most of the time and we see beginners almost every day. It's the ones that don't ask for help that scare us the most. Being a public park, if they refuse help, there is not much we can do other than warn all bystanders.

I'm not quite clear as to whether the owner of the crashed airplane tried to lay a guilt trip on you or whether you are taking it on yourself. You had only two choices when he asked for your help: 1) do what you did and hope he could fly the plane to a successful landing and everybody feels good, or 2) refuse to help and possibly be considered a real jerk. He was gonna fly it anyway and probably crash it whether you helped or not. Whether you are a recognized instructor or not is of no importance. A guy brings a plane to the field to fly, he has to accept the idea that nobody is gonna do anything to deliberately contribute to his crashing. And he has to accept the concept before hand that if he asks someone to help him, that someone is going to do his best to help That is simply the nature of our hobby. Everyone In the hobby tries to help and wants the newbie to be successful. The more people who are successul in our hobby, the better off we all are. A man asking for help (instruction)has to assume the helper (instructor)is not responsible for whatever happens. A guy brings his plane to the field, asks for help, the airplane ends up crashed, it's on the shoulders of the owner. Period. As soneone mentioned earlier, we start holding a helper or instructor responsible for a poor outcome, nobody is going to be willing to help. At that point, this hobby is doomed.

I wouldn't make something out of nothing. A relatively new pilot crashed his airplane. That is an unfortunate but common occurence. A lot of trainers end up as splinters.

Should you have yanked the transmitter out of his hands and tried to save it? Maybe but that's hard to say without actually being there and hindsight is always 20/20. I definitely wouldn't lose any sleep over it.

Was the guy really ready to fly the plane on his own? Maybe, maybe not. Perhaps he was nowhere near ready or perhaps he was and just got disoriented &amp; lost the plane. Even very experienced pilots can lose a plane.

No you should not be grounded ! You got a lesson in flying now use it to help new folks as you get more time  yourself. His intructor let him down by not giving him more intruction! The man that taught me worked with me untill he knew I was ready and by then I was! I could not have had a better teacher and when I am ready and am not yet ready to teach I will teach as I was taught. I just give some sound advice that Eddy gave me like do not try and make a bad landing work and come around again! I have to thank Eddy for being tough on me and a very great teacher, And now a flying buddy that I still am in awe of his fifty years plus flying! He is 76 and can out fly anyone at the field and taught most of them, Thanks so much Eddy you are the perfect trainer!   Bob</p>

I think you guys should look at the facts as layed out by the orange cat.  </p>

1. The pilot asked for oversite and assistance and was assured that that would be provided.</p>

2. He was no longer over the flying site prior to the crash.  A pretty good indication that the pilot was in trouble.</p>

3. He tried to turn over the control box to the orange cat.</p>

4. Are cigar store wooden indians still available?  Because just standing there and doing nothing does not cut it.</p>

hi  you did nothing wrong-  the point is he asked you for your help  !-when this is done -the owner  of the plane has to take resposibility for putting  his  plane in your hands   -you did the right thing by making the plane flyable for him-    he did not ask you to land the plane-    but in his trying to land the plane himself -he put the plane in a bad   attitude to close to the ground for anyones help    - simply put -NOT YOUR RESPONSIBILITY  i remember that right after i soloed    -this is the most CRITICAL TIME  for anyone  and there  plane-as this is the first time you have  NO ASSISTANCE -you are standing on your own-    and your expierience with learing RC on your own -has  just begun- i did ask to have someone stand next to me for a while after my  solo-   that was my choice- but i was not in a position to blame any  person for any  poor flying i may have done at that time-the guy whos plane you flew has just got to suck it up and lean by the mistake he made while making his landing that day-his leaning curve has just begun- the only other point -is that  it is important  to ask for what you need from the RC' s around you  -but that means you know your own limitations and very often we misjudge what they are in a given situation- as the fellow you took up did on his landing  i know i  did  most of my crashing the first year or so i flew-but again -part of the learning curve that come with getting to be a great RC pilot

all of my plank students had to show the basics in both left and right hand patterns
and since experience showed most n00bs go out and try acro, i required loops, rolls
inverted flight and engine out dead stick landings to get a solo,it worked well

shouldnt have tried helped someone who just soloed w/o a buddy box....if a buddy box was used none this would have happend so i think is both your faults

Regflyer; i like your clubs requirements/certification sheet , but one additional requirement i would suggest, is "recovery", my instructor was always "messing" with me, he'd say give me a loop, and in the middle of the loop he'd let off the trainer switch, put the plane in a bad postion, then say "your plane" and I had to recover, I think iI learned alot from those

One "solo" dosen't make the trip. Have the new wanna be pilot demonstrate at least 3 seperate days of flying that he or she can do all the pilot stuff. That includes equipment checks, range checks, flight surface checks, start up and taxi work. Safety first always. I can relate to the taxi and ground handling issues. As a private pilot I had trouble learning to use the rudder (with the feet). I was instructed by my flight instructor to taxi "solo" onto the active runway and apply enough power to lift the nose wheel off the ground into just short of take off speed and travel the complete runway length on the mains. Full stop and turn around to do the same downwind. 1 hour of that cured the rudder work. Oh yeah I had to announce intentionson the radio as I did this.
Just don't turn 'em loose with 1 "solo". It ain't good!

I've watched this thread unfold and I guess that I'm going to be one of the few who steps up with a problem here. I feel that there is at least equal fault here. Yes, the older gentleman probably shouldn't have tried to fly without his instructor around, he's not totally at fault here</p>

GaRCfield also has fault here as he stepped up to offer his help to this gentleman. Because of this the pilot thought he had any help that would have been needed if he got into trouble and therefore felt safe flying his plane. Had Joe not stepped up and said he would help the pilot probably wouldn't have flown. Yes I know that I sound a bit harsh, but this is the responsibility that one takes on when they step up to help others. Whether it be at the field in a situation like this, or here online, there is going to be some consequences for offering help that turns bad. Almost any instructor that teaches students faces the same situation. If I am teaching somebody on a buddy box and I fail to take control back from the student and save his plane then I am at fault for the crash. It's just part of being an instructor. I know there will be those out there that are going to say that the instructor can't save them all, to which I would say that the instructor should be able to save 99.99999% of students (not counting equipment failure). How can I say this? Because good instructors should never let the student get into a situation where he can't recover the plane for them. When with a newer student, or one they haven't flown with before, the instructor will take back control of the plane at the very first hint of trouble, regardless of the fact that the student may have been able to recover the plane. It's much easier to laugh about taking control too soon when you are back in the pits than to be out picking up plane parts because you didn't take it back and it crashed. As the instructor learns what the student is capable of he can allow him more time to recover the plane before he takes back control. This is the very basis of how most instructors teach a student. And if the student decides that they are going to just fly they way they want regardless of what the instructor says, well that's easy. He just lands their plane and hands them the radio back and tell them they are on their own. If Joe had tried to take the radio from this guy to save the plane and he turned and wouldn't let him have the plane Joe would have been clear of responsibility in this situation because he did try (in fact, I won't instruct by passing the radio anymore for exactly this reason).</p>

Is it bad because somebody doesn't have the skill to teach or instruct? Not at all. It's not the thing that everybody can do. It can be very stressful for the instructor having the responsibility for the student, his equipment, and the safety of the public on his shoulders. And not all can handle it. In fact, some of the best pilots out there make the worst instructors. So skills on the sticks does not mean skills in instructing.</p>

Yes I am with you guys, bottom line is to work with these newbe's till they can show a good instructor that  they are capable of flying and landing and field checks. I think its great when a teacher chalenges the student to see what they can do, mine did also! my intructor worked with me till I knew i was ready to solo and when I came back the next day he watched as I did everything to set up and fly on my own! But he was there showing me every step of they way on how to be a great pilot right down to what I was wearing that it was not to loose to get in to the prop! My intructor took teaching me very serious and exspected me to do the same! Like I said before I had the best teacher! I still think the guy doing the teaching should had made sure he could fly, and why did the other guy have to set up the plane to get it to fly right? Why didn't the instructor already have that done?if the other guy had not been there and helped get it right it may have been worst because he would have taken off anyway thinking he was ok because his intructor said he soloed ! I have read most of all the comments on this thread, and some of you guys are really rude. Truth be told that instructor that told the guy he soloed should have had his(blank) (three letter word)out there still helping this guy even if he did a perfect flight once. If you are going to give constructive criticism than give it, but dont attack someone. Cause an official instructor should have been there.

When somebody asks you for help, "Being nice" and allowing them to put a plane into the air that you won't help them fly or save isn't being very nice.  If you are going to act as an instructor, then DO SO.  The guy was a newbie and you knew it. That means you knew he'd likely get into some trouble.  Watching that plane go in was absolutely WRONG.  The guy came to the field for help and training.  He could've crashed it on his own out behind his own house without you there, and had just as much help.</p>

I am an instructor.  Before I put somebody in the air, I tell them that I will be giving them instructions, and that EVERY ONE OF THEM should be considered an ORDER.  If they want to go and fly as a democracy and do what they want, then don't bother me.  If they want to learn how to control their plane so that they can do what they want later on, then they'll follow the instructions.  I'm very, VERY tough on them.  Why?  Because GRAVITY is even TOUGHER!  If you read one of my posts, you read my teaching Mantra.  When a student tells me they have to put their mind inside the plane because somebody else told them that was the best way to fly an RC plane, I tell them to go and have THAT FOOL teach them to fly, because they don't want to learn what I have to teach them.  Inside of two weeks I can have a student flying very well as well as landing consistently.  This was before Flight simulators.  These days it takes about the same amount of time, because I use a flight simulator to train them at first, and the field for the second half.  It's good to let them see it will crash if they don't do what they're supposed to.  WE can't do that at the field.  Well, I guess you've proven me wrong on that point, but we SHOULDN'T do that at the field.</p>

If you can't act as an instructor, then SAY NO.  You were the experienced flyer to him, he was the newbie, he trusted you and your judgement.  You can't justify or rationalize it, you screwed up. </p>

I'm not going to apologize for saying that.  I'm not a PC kinda guy.  I'm a straight shooter.  It's the truth, and call it rude if you wish, FirebirdCdr2, but the truth is just the truth.</p>

You are feeling guilty.  That's good.  This is how we learn to NOT do the same thing again.</p>

We have a responsibility to each other in this hobby.  We protect each other through bonding and learning, and in doing so we protect each other AND the general public.  These planes may be OUR toys, but they are FAR from being actual TOYS.  They are fast and dangerous when uncontrolled.  Every single manual for every single kit and ARF in the world clearly states that misuse can cause injury or DEATH.  ANY experienced flyer knows this.  I don't need to tell you that allowing any plane to crash without attempting to regain control is not just unsafe but extremely dangerous.</p>

Forget this grounding yourself crap, just do the right thing.  We all screw up from time to time.  If you don't have much money to buy him another trainer then maybe you have an old one around or know a friend who does.  Or you could make good on it by helping him rebuild it or spending some extra time trying to make sure he doesn't quit the hobby in disappointment over this deal.  Maybe helping him restore it or an old one that's around to flightworthiness.  What's done is done, so now you carry on and do the best you can.</p>

But, you already knew this.  I just thought I'd give you a gentle nudge in the right direction.</p>

I don't disagree with anything here, and I accept whatever blame or criticism people have said.

I think it's always a little tricky when discussing things like this online - no one was there but me, and maybe my explanation was perfect, or maybe it was a misrepresentation of what actually happened.

A soloed pilot showed up at our club. He seemed a little nervous, so I tried to offer some comfort. He was nervous about taking off with the plane veering to the right and people standing on the flight line along the right side of the strip. He asked that I take the plane off for him, and said he would be fine once the plane was in the sky. I can relate to that from my training days, and I imagined that it was the same for most people - taking off and landing is what most people consider the two hardest parts.

He attempted to take off a few times with me standing next to him. He was able to smoothly accelerate the plane and keep it in the middle of the runway, right up until take off speed when the plane started to pull right, and he would try to correct left and kill the throttle. He was very, very close to having the plane in the sky on his own.

The pilot announced to the other pilot and bystanders who were near the strip that I would be taking the plane off for him and handing over the controls. I was not under the impression he would need help touring around in the sky - he never said anything like that, and I can't imagine a trainer would give someone a solo who could not make one circle in the sky with an airplane.

I took the plane up, trimmed it out, gave it an appropriate altitude and velocity vector, and handed him the controls. He seemed to be in control but letting the plane get pretty far away. I thought he was losing altitude so he could see the plane better; it was fairly gradual and steady.  I advised him to bring the plane in closer and to pull up, which confused him. He attempted to do both, but apparently pushed the elevator rather than pushed it. A witness later described the plane as flying level and maintaining altitude, then suddenly nose diving to the ground. It was not clear to me that he was not able to recover the plane until the final few seconds which seemed to happen very quickly.

I don't really know why I'm recapping, but I do know that I will be much more careful about helping other pilots with their planes in the sky. I can not afford to replace this plane (actually just the fuse needs to be replaced, and while I accept blame I don't think that replacing the fuse is my responsibility) but you can be sure as sugar that I will do more than what I think is fair in the way of assisting this pilot get back in the air, short of flying his plane again.

As I said before I brought this up with our club president (who's one of our instructors) and I will do everything I can to see that we have a proper certification process for giving pilots their solo. This man should not have gotten his solo. He was incapable of operating an aircraft, including in the sky, which he did not make clear to me, and which never became clear until the end of the flight.

Dead stick landing on the runway should be an absolute requirement for certification...and I don't mean shut the engine off on approach, either. I mean you're just out in front of you somewhere and OOPS, dead stick! Now land. I've lost count of how many wrecks I've seen because a pilot isn't capable of maintaining proper control without the engine running. New pilots should also go through stall training. It'd help cut down on the amount of picking-up to do when an engine flames out on takeoff or they bank too soon on an aborted landing.

The most important lesson a pilot needs to learn is that until the plane is on the ground and it comes to a complete stop you KEEP ON FLYING IT, whether it's on the runway or out in the giggly-weeds.


Call me old school or weird or whatever, but I've always thought it would help a learning pilot to do a complete flight with a model with no throttle (a la old-school 1/2A). You learn an awful LOT about flying when you're stuck with it until the fuel runs out and then you want to actually land the thing on the runway in your general vicinity.

I didn't find the other's comments particularly rude, even if on the harsh side.  It's a situation that calls for rapt attention because it affects our hobby.  I didn't say you called me rude, I was commenting on your assessment of other's comments.  I shoot as straight as anybody, no reason to think that you wouldn't find my comments to be "rude" as well.</p>

From gaRCfield's last post, he's pretty much moving in the right direction with it anyway.  I think he accepted the folk's comments in a constructive fashion, showing that he's got his focus on where he's going with it..  </p>
