Thinking about getting my first gasser tonight. Great Planes PT 19 Giant with a SPE 26 engine. is there anything Specifically that I should look for while checking out the plane? I have already told the guy that I need to hear it run, before laying down the cash. He said the engine only has about five flights on it.

Is that 5 tanks, or FLIGHTS. If it has flown, most likely no real surprises. If it has not been in the air, and if it has. A really good thurough ground/ range check before first flight. Not to scare you away at all. Sounds like the perfect first gasser. But once you get it do some reading on R/F induced enging noise, and range checking. Assuming it's 72mhz. But all that theory can be applied to 2.4ghz. Well your pumped, and you should be! Your comming home with your first gasser. The just of my caution is only preparing, and proper preflight checks, as if it was a maiden. Look into getting a local experianced Gas pilot to look it over, and make any suggestions.

does a oerson need to watch the mounting needs of different gassers? like how much length from the firewall you need? i was looking at putting an arveoate 26 in a great planes P17 stearman, the manual for the palne says 6 1/4" but the manual for the engine says you need a minimun of 7 1/2", how big of a problem would that create?

Five flights in the air. But the guy couldn't get the engine to fire, so I didn't get it. Told him if he got it running to give me call. Nice plane. He also said that he hasn't flown it in a while. which makes me worry a little about gum build up in the carb. I think his batteries were low, It just wasn't getting any fire.

Hey Bill,
You need to wonder if the Engine was broke in properly.
Would he sell it minus the engine ?
Check for quality servos (high Torque) and ignition and
Rx batteries. Range check with A engine running at various
speeds (on the ground).
Check all hinges, pushrods and clevis's. Maybe install a NEW
Switch of quality also. What ratio of gas to oil was he running ?
You get the picture, pppppp

guy called, got it running, spark plug was loose he says, along with low igntion battery. Said once he tightened the plug and charged the battery it started on the first flip. Anyway, going to pick it up on Tuesday night. Of course I told him that I still have to hear it run. Weather has really turned south here, so I may have to wait a month or two before flying. That's ok. I want to spend some time scaling it out, do some research on the looks of the plane as it flew back in the 40's and make it nice and scale. Should be a good winter project.
I looked over all the control surfaces the other night and it does have hi torque servos. Should be good to go. Comes with a Futaba PCM Rx , which I can't use. Anybody looking for a PCM Rx?

I put a US 41 cc in a Dynaflite PT-19. Everyone said don't do it.
I have to tell you, its one of the best matches I have ever seen. It pulls it perfect and I can power back for nice slow flight, ballance was perfect. I am all around very happy with it. If the wingspan is close I would do it. It is a great plane to fly.

. I'll let you know. I don't remember anything other than him saying it was PCM and that it was a 150.00 Rx.
