Default help with first time OS engine

Guys I am brand new , I don’t know where to turn. You guys are my hobby shop. Please someone take me under their wing here!

First things first. I have a used OS CV-R .18. It is on a used GT2. This is my first nitro.

I am not sure which way the fly wheel should spin. Also the flywheel on the motor is very tough to spin with my finger, I can barley push it. Once it gets to a certain point, (piston high or low?), it spins pretty effortlessly. But I can’t spin it with my finger. The starter box with full batt can barely turn it and the connection finally melted. So my guess is it shouldn’t’ be this tough to turn over.

OK second, is there a manual way to see if fuel is getting to the carb. I don’t know how to prime it. I am not sure if fuel is even going into the carb.

Lets just start there for now!

I have a hot shot glow plug starter and the glow plug element looks fine. I am not sure if the glow plug is getting hot enough though. Not sure how to test that either.

Please help me out. I have a few hours every night to work on this thing.

ok, to see which way the flywheel spins, push the car foward on the ground and see which way the gears move. if you cant see the gears, dont worry about it, its not that important. secondly, the flywheel is always hard to push around tdc or top dead center, this is normal. i cant turn mine over by hand either. to prime the carb there is usually a button on the fuel tank. if not look at this forum. should explain lots of questions http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_5517128/tm.htm
you should be able to see the fuel in the fuel lines. and i wouldnt worry about the glow plug so long as its fully charged or with new batteries. check out the link. good luck.

Thanks for the link very helpful.

A question in advance:
My tank doesn't have a primmer, and If I can't turn the flywheel very well, the only other way is the blow technique? Really?

If I can barley move the flywheel after I try heating the head, how much force or speed will I need to turn it with my finger to prime the carb?

Also, do I need to cover up the pipe and the carb for primming or just the pipe?

Thanks again.

Over time I am sure this will all become clearer to me.

For priming, I use a syringe on the pressure line from your exhaust to your fuel tank, just until I can see the fuel getting to the carb through the fuel lines. Saves having to try and blow with your mouth.

Apollo,
Your instruction guide is helpful, thank you. Gabbonator had posted it earlier in this same thread.
Thanks for taking the time to put it together!

Gabbonator,
Thanks for your patience and simplicity. Using your suggestion I have determined that the flywheel and clutch bell should spin in the same direction. Although rolling the GT2 on the ground, just the clutch bell and spur gear spin , not the fly wheel. I assume the flywheel will need to spin the same direction as the clutchbell.

So with this, my first issue has been solved.

So good news, flywheel now spins, bad news motor won’t turn over on its own.

I was able to prime my motor using the blow technique, but instead of physically doing it, I just punched a shot of compressed air in the suggested fuel line, and bam primed.

I heated the engine up with a blow dryer. The flywheel was a bit easier to spin. Lots of oil and gunk everywhere. The starter box spun the flywheel at a solid rpm, the motor chugged away, never turning over on its own. Fuel seemed to be getting to the carb.

My next guess will be to check the glow plug. Please suggest a way to note weather or not my glow plug is in working condition. Apollo’s link to “reading a glow plug” doesn’t yet pertain, I need to know first if the glow plug is working or gets hot enough.

Thanks

You could of flooded the engine, which creates whats called 'hydro lock', which simply means that too much fuel is in the combustion chamber and is not allowing the piston to doa full cycle. To fix the problem all you have to do is take out the glow plug, turn the motor over a few times to get rid of the excess fuel, put glow plug back in a bam! Away you go. Also, to aid in starting the motor, turn the flywheel all the way in the oppisite direction, so when you go to start it there is plenty of run up before the piston hits tdc!

Hope that helps mate. Any questions just ask away!

to check the glow plug take it out and push it down in you glow plug igniter and if the little metal wires inside turns red your good bu if they dont turn red then get aanother glow plug. I would also recommend get an extra. In a gallon of gas i went through 2 or 3 glow plugs. Good luck.

There is another way to plime the engine. Plug up the exhauste stinger(the little opening where smoke comes out), then leave the glow igniter off, turn the engine over. This will push fuel up the fuel lines into the carb. BUT!!! Stop as soon as fuel reaches the carb. You should be able to see this through the fuel line. Hope that helped.

I will start a new thread for it.

Thank you again. Little motor is screaming away!
