Does anyone here use the venom smart-temp on their truck, preferrably the Genesis? I tried using the heat monitor on the motor, but it kept reading a very high temperature compared to the Ofna heatgun. Almost 60 F off everytime.

Hey guys,
I'm almost hesitant to even bring this up but I think in the long run it will benefit those on this board. Throughout my years of racing around the factory guys I've learned one important lesson; and that is that with the exception of infared temp gauges in the hundreds of dollar range, very few temperature gauges are accurate. I personally don't even temp my engines anymore. (unless someone happens to have one of the grossly expensive laser gauges right there and that only occurs at the track) If you have smoke coming out of your exhaust, and then engine isn't dying every 5 minutes from being excessively lean but is making power than you're right where you want to be.

just to back u up there cen...
ive just run my .28 in on this approach, did it with my os .18 too. i did check the .18 with a gun i purchased after the .18, but ran it over before i got the .28... the readings were within the realms of sensible, but i dont trust them as much as my gut feeling.
just dont go bananas on the adjustment screws and u should be fine.
mind u, to detect engine running problems, they can certainly give u some idea of whats happening. i understand ur reluctance to say anything now cenracing... i expect some flaming now for typing that lot!

judgement,
Thanks for the back up. And I do agree with you that they can be used to help figure out problems. I just see a lot of people that become extremely frustrated with their engines because they can't find power with them and still have them within 20-40degrees of our recommendations based upon the readings of temp gauges that are often off by about that amount. Wow, that was a terrific run on sentence.
And I'll take the flaming, I can handle it.

I am not going to flame anyone but please try to remember that there are some inexperienced members hear that do not have alot of tuning experience. For a new person getting into the hobby or somebody breaking in a new engine I strongly suggest the use of a temp gun. For those with alot of tuning experience do what you feel is right you know the risks involved and you also know what a proper smoke trail looks like.
As for the Venom temp gauge I have found that it works best between the block and the head. Not in between the cooling fins.

I have used the venom temps for a while and found them to be pretty accurate ... within about 10 degrees..I don't however use it exclusively to tell how an engine is running... my ears and eyes work better... a smoke trail and a screaming engine usually get the engine where i want it to be... Funny thing, I look at the temp and its around 260....

I'm considering buying a VST.
I hear a lot of different things about it: shorter radio range tec.
About the temp issue: why didn't anyone put the sensor part of the wire ( I think it's the red part) in a cup of boiling water?
It should read 100 degrees C ( or 212 F).
You can do the same with a IR heat gun...than you can compare..

Mine reads way off from the temp gun, temp gun shows alot higher, i figure i need to move the wire down the motor some or something, but all i did was pay attention to the difference in temp and just set the venom smart temp cutoff accordingly.

I receiver the Venom Smart Temp today.
I put it in my car and put some water on the stove.
When the water was boiling I put the red temp sensor part in the boiling water.
The VST read 100 degr.C/212 degr. F.
How more accurate can you be??
I went to the racetrack this afternoon and everything worked well.
No problems here, I'm a happy camper!
Only one thingy: the voltage of my 5-cell NiMH receiver pack reads 5.3 Volts, fully charged...

I just bought the same thing today. Planning on installing and testing it tonight. Sounds like the boiling water test works good. I will have to try it.
