Nice job Rusty. The flying and the planes were very impressive. Your Tipo and Dave G's Bridi XLTwere my personal favorites. Ralph White running and old rear exhaust OPS redhead tickled me. That's just old school cool!!!
I can't believe how fast those planes were compared to what we fly in regular pattern today. Hopefully I'll have a plane for next time. Mike Mueller

After attending for the second time the Chicago Classic Pattern event I would like to thank Rusty for once again putting on a successful event. You out did yourself by not only having the classic pattern event but added the classic TOC event. While attendance for the TOC was low it was very spirited and Ibelieve it will grow. It was really neat to see how the airplanes have progressed from the beginnings of the TOC. We were fortunate to have Mike McConvilles Zlin (78), Dave Burtons Laser (80) and my Laser (82) which really showed how quickly the airplanes progressed in size. The only thing that held it back from progressing more were engines and they certainly came along later. Because of Rustys TOC idea I pulled out of storage the Laser I flew in the 82 TOC and got it flying again. What's even more amazing is I converted it to electric power. I never in  my wildest dreams years ago would have ever thought it would be possible to fly such a large airplane with electric power. We've come a long way baby!  Although the weather was a challenge everyone handled it well and I believe everyone will want to come back next year. We really missed the folks that came last year and couldn't make it this year however we did see some new blood and that is great to see. Thanks to the Fox Valley Aeroclub for the use of their fine flying facility. One of the best I have ever seen and great hospatality from the club members. I really believe if everyone that loves flying the classic pattern planes would come to this event it would become "The Nats" of Classic pattern. Wouldn't that be great! If you didn't make it this year make plans for next year and go out and spread the word. Rusty has put a tremendous amount of time & effort to make this event a success and the only way to keep it going is for everyone that loves classic pattern to attend. Thanks again to everyone and hope to see you all next year.

I there a list of Classic TOC planes for this event? Can I use a 1/3 scale Laser 200? What motors can be used?

Hi Mark,

Your '82 TOC Laser looks great for an almost 30 year old plane and now that it is electric powered makes it quite interesting. Being that the TOC is definitely part of the classic pattern scene your conversion would make for a great thread. I'm sure there are others, myself included, that would love to see and read more about your Laser.

As of right now, Lord willing, I am planning on attending next years event. In conversing with the wife about missing the last two years she's willing to spend a couple days tolerating classic pattern planes for a couple days with her in the "city". Now I need to decide what to build to fly for next year as I haven't built a pattern plane since 1980. I've been all electric for about 4 years now but I'd probably want to do glow.

Rusty I am looking forward to your full report and I'm hoping you are planning on hosting another Chicagoland Classic Pattern Contest for 2012.

Here is some info on my 29+ year old Laser converted to electric. It's a 1/3 scale 98" Wayne Ulrey design that was completly scratch built by my dad in 1982. I flew it at the 82 TOC & placed 7th . I always felt I would have done better if my engine had been more reliable. Anyway, I wanted to fly it in Rusty's event but didn't want to use the Tarten engine. I was afraid to use a modern day gas engine due to vibration on the antique airframe. Also, the wing ribs are made of foam and I'm told by someone that tried a gas engine in one of these the wing ribs totally disinagrated. I therefore converted it to electric. I've attached some pictures. I'm using a ElectriFli 55cc electric motor with a Castle Creations Ice 80 speed control. I'm using 2-6s 5800mah Turnigey batteries. I'm running a 19/8 Xoar wood prop and can fly an IMAC type pattern for about 6-7 min if I am careful with throttle management. The airplane is light at 16 1/2 lb w/o batteries however the 2 6s packs weigh 4 lbs so flying weight is 20 1/2lb which is actually pretty light for an airplane of this size. When I get more time I'm going to use a larger speed control and more prop however it flys really nice now with very good vertical if managed properly. This conversion has been a huge learning experience but has been very satisfying to once again get the bird in the air. I only wish my dad could see her fly again.

Mark, thank you for the info on your '82 TOC Laser. Great information and a great job on the conversion. It appears it must still fly pretty well along with the Phoenix 7 based on the wooden plaques in the first picture.

Your pictures look awesome. I really like seeing the Laser converted as it was the first larger scale plane I ever saw fly.

Mike,
I did really well in Chicago. First place with the TOC Laser and first place in Masters with the Hanger 9 Phoenix 7. The H9 Phoenix is a GREAT flying airplane.

Arch,
I was hoping you would be in Chicago so you could have seen it. It really fly's well. Not a 3D machine but does precision very graceful and easy to fly. It was fun flying it again and electric is really NEAT!

Mark,

I'm definitely coming to the St. Clairsville contest in August, hopefully you can bring it then. I had every intention of coming to Chicago and then other things came up here on Friday, so I just stayed local and went to the FARM contest.

Mike,

Itoo am building my first new pattern airplane in over 20 years. Ihave a Conquest IV that Ipurchased in about 1989 to replace my Atlanta but never completed. It has been safely sitting in the rafters since 1990. Iam considering building it with E-Power because, like you, Ihave only flown electric that last few years.

Istarted a thread on it in RCG to share my experience and gain insight from others. You may want to consider e-power as well.

www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php

Good luck,

Doug

Thats remarkable! Having flown both for many years I can say that these new ones are easier. The noise factor and the speed out of Rusty's Tipo and the Phoenix's at Rusty's contest were incredible though. There is a certain intangible that is missing in today's planes.
For reference to the Dave Brown plane here's a pic,Mike
