Default Generation

Back in the early 90's near when I first got into the hobby I purchased a pattern plane from a club member, the plane was called a Generation or a Generation II. The plane was a(I think) foam core wing and stab, with plug in wings. It was also equipped with mechanical retracts with one retract servo in each wing. The engine was mounted inverted with the tune pipe recessed in the under side of the fuse.

I purchased the plane as a bear plane. The engine I purchased for it was an MVVS .77. this engine proved to be a nightmare in the inverted application. the only way I could start the engine was to build a stand to set the plane in upside down and start the engine with the head pointing up.

The engine ended up being the demise of the plane. Inflight engine failured were the norm.

Now why am I bringing this up? I got out of the hobby for a while due to a move and am getting ready to get back into the hobby. I really liked the plane even though I never got to fly it to it's potential. I love to build and if I could find a set of plans for this plane I would love to build another one.

I'd like to get some opinions on this aircraft and locate someone with a set of plans for it. I don't know if it fall into the classic real of pattern planes, but would like to know.

Thank for any info or help.

Would this plane have had a rather boxy wooden fuselage?

Yes, the fuseloge was on the boxy side, the cockpit/hatch was about the only thing that broke the stright lines of the plane. the cockpit/hatch was built up out of balsa, there was no clear windscreen. the windshield was just painted on.

I think this was an early Sam Turner design, an easily built pattern trainer. There were a significant number in the southeast in the mid-80's, most built by Sam himself. This later evolved into the Pursuit 120, which saw real mass production. Sam is out of the circuit and the plans are probably unavailable.

I hope you haven't got your heart set on it.

If you want to build, I'd recommend either a more contemporary local design like Mike Hester's or some of the older classics with a build thread in this forum such as the Blue Angel.

I didn't expect them to still be in production, not with the changes made to pattern planes since I had this aircraft. But I was hoping someone might have a set of plans lieing around. I've scratch built several airplanes and while this wouldn't be a major challenge to build it would be an injoyable project.

I really don't see it as being a pattern trainer, more of a full flege pattern ship. The wings and aft serfaces had incidence adjustments, pull-pull on the rudder inverted engine with the tuned pipe recessed in the bottom of the fusealoge, fuse was very long compaired to the wing span.

What does seem strange is a can find no mention of the aircraft anywhere, I done serveral searches on it and can find no mention of it anywhere.

As fare as having my heart set on it, it not a major concern but I do like to fly planes that no one else has. Nothing worse than showing up at the field with a new plane and there being 6 of them there.

You might see if you can get in touch with Roger Laudati in the Tampa area. He may recollect someone who had one. There were several in that part of the state....may even be one still around.

Well, maybe I can set a criteria for what I want in a plane and someone can tell me what fills the bill.

1. plug-in wings and stabs
2. ajustable wing and stabs
3. foam core wing and stabs
4. 60 2 stroke to 120 four stroke
5. possible tuned pipe tunel
6. built up wood fusaloge
7. option for retracts
8. pull-pull rudder
9. fuel tank near CG

And most of all a fairly chep price

How about a Cursor?

On second thought, that's not a plug-in wing. Rainedav's suggestion is probably better. The Desire is a fine airplane.

Well, any of the PAC planes are decent choices. I am partial to the Sequel myself, but they are all good aircraft. The only hitch is they are all fiberglass fuse kits if that is an issue.

Your description sounds a lot like the Black Magic:

http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_3640864/tm.htm

Or the Insight:

http://www.insightrc.com/

But they are both full 2M aircraft and need at least a 1.40 to fly well.

If you are stuck on the 60-1.20 size airframe, then a Boxxer 60/90/120 would be a good bet. They are all balsa aircraft that build easy and fly well. They have one piece wings, however, which you said you do not want. You could easily enough change that to a 2 piece plug-in set up with a wing tube if you wanted that, since it's a scratch build.

Thanks for all the input so far.

I look at the Desire good looking plane, but just didn't have that long lean look I want.

The Black Magic is beautiful but a new YS-140 plus everything to put in in the plane the way i'd want to put it in the plane.

anybody got a link to a boxer?

I guess some may be wondering why I want plug in wings. Theres a couple of reasons, first of I like a mid wing design, The incidance is adjustable where a saddle mount (one peice wing) isn't) I have a YS-60 long stroke looking for a home and the mid wing allows a recessed belly mount tuned pipe.

If you want that long tail moment look with a piped 60, then a Jekyll may be your best bet. Sold by PAC, again. If it was me, I would get a Boxxer 60, but the shape is not for everyone. It is set up for a piped 60, though.

Attached is a pic of a Boxxer 90; the 60 looks very similar, with a slightly less rounded canopy area. Search on Boxxer in this forum and the main pattern one and you will find a few posts. Rick Allison's contact info is in there, as well. If you can't find it, let me know and I have his e-mail at work.

The saddle mount is adjustable for incidence, it's just a PITA, that's all...

We May Have a Winner! (the Boxxer) First off, it's unusal looking enough to catch my interest, It fits much of my criteria, and my mind has already come up with a couple of covering or paint schemes for that body

Did a serch on it, the only info i pulled up was in this thread. googled it came up with a bi-plane, so i need some more info

Check out this thread, it has more pics and contact details for Rick:

I think you'll be satisfied with this one, Mobileraptor. I flew a .40 sized one and it was quite good.

I believe the Boxer is a wooden version of the Cursor.
