An update- Dad has finished his .40 Tsunami. It's a beauty. I helped him with the logo and some minor stuff but he did the majortiy of the work and that thing really flies like an arrow. He loves it.
It's currently powered by an MVVS .40, but he's going to cram a Jett Engineering .50 into it to turn it into a rocket. It's also his first model with retracts, and he loves those too.
One thing I noticed when flying it- the ailerons are a little spongy when at slower speeds, and kind of slow to react at higher speeds, so he's going to increase the aileron throw past the recommended 3/8ths. Also, I will say that the 1" rudder throw might look excessive, but it's totally neccecary to hold a good knife edge. Bonus- almost zero knife edge coupling. Tracks straight and true, like an arrow. And it's pretty quick too.
I'll try to post some pictures of it in the bones and as completed when I get the opportunity this week.

Hi, found this thread while building my T40 over the winter. Finished it up a few weeks ago and put about 3 hrs on it. It's got a Magnum 46 XLS, dual aileron servos and I made some minor internal mods. AUW is 4lbs 15oz, balanced per plans. It's definitely a hot rod, the faster it goes the happier it is. I had to crank a little washout into the wing tips to improve low speed handling. I use an APC 10/5 for best all around performance, 10/6,11/4,11/5 are ok.
It's a blast to fly, has true unlimited vertical, slow & point rolls nicely, full throttle knife edge passes are just down right fun! I haven't done any spins yet, just having to much fun going full speed. The one comment I hear over and over, (why no retracts?). Well the next one will get retracts and I'll add flaps so I can use higher pitch props and still slow it down to land. Also found out that a US40 canopy is a perfect fit after I over heated the original in the dye pot.[:@] A truly nice little plane that's definitely different at the field.

I'm always interested in seeing how others go about layout of gear. Do you have any more pics of your radio install.
What are your thoughts regarding flaps? How would you divvy the wing up flap/aileron wise and would you make the flaps deeper than the ailerons?
Are you running a 10 or 12 oz tank on the 46 XLS?
My plane has a very similar setup to yours (two aileron servos) and weighs an oz more (5 lbs) with a ST S40 and Macs pipe. I'm surprised the 46 doesn't do better on an 11" prop. A 10x5 must really be turning!

doxilia, As far as props go, I think I like a 10/6 best but it's hard to slow down for a good landing at my lowest idle and it hauls good with a 11/5 but I got a prop strike on landing, so it's a compromise. Yea it's turning fast with the 10/5. I didn't tach it, but I've burned a couple glow plugs already with it, but it sure is fast and very loud!( I LOVE IT!)
For flaps I think I'd just use about a third of the aileron. I blew it on that, I installed the torque rods but forgot to hinge it for flaps. Maybe I'll retrofit it later at some point. I put a 8oz fuel tank in it, I get 10 minutes at mostly full throttle and enough to land, (just about right for me).

hey david phil here. Sorry about the detour in the deception thread won't happen again. Any ways the little tsunami is on the bench but haven't done alot to it. got most of the wing framed up but haven't glued the inner ribs in yet still waiting for my retracts to show up. I think i'll have to move a couple ribs ever so slightly to get more ground clearance and fir the leg's when the gear is up. I'll post some photo's once my retracts show up and i have them installed. if you need a wider stance, may I recommend that you leave the original ribs in their position and make two sub-ribs (only D-tube section) to hold the retract body. Cut them in balsa and then use those as a template for the 1/16" ply doublers. The interfering rib in between where the body might go can be relieved to suit. It's good to have at least half a rib (the top part) in the D-tube section near the root.
What retracts are you using? What about servos?

I just sketched up the retract and servo installation for the 43" span T10. I didn't find a problem using the standard rib spacings for the GP mechanical retracts but wheels used are 1.5" which should be fine on pavement. The wells are 1.75" but I would suggest making them from 1/64" ply rather than 1/16" balsa. Just to allow a little more space around the wheel. It should also be fairly easy to slide in the rolled ply into a round cutout in the bottom sheeting.
I also pulled 3 of the original 11 ribs in the outer panels. I think the 43" span wing should be fine without them so long as shear webs are used out to rib 6 (the new #6). The last web will be rather wide but I think that's ok.
What retracts are you waiting for Phil?

in that case, it looks like we're thinking along the same lines... [8D]
I drew in HS65HB's for the ailerons and an HS65MG for the retracts. There are some similar sized servos specifically designed for retracts. I forget where I found them but they are perhaps a little more stout. I don't think they are proportional though - probably 180 degree servos. HS-65's all around sounds like a good choice. Dave Brown Lectra Lite or Dubro Foam wheels.

a little more done today. Tail parts built. and i think this what you had in mind for a battery tray/esc mount? pics with a full size tsnami fuse just for reference and my retracts from tower showed yesterday so will get back on the wing seeing how all major components are done. If you want me to start my own thread and not clutter your's up i'll do that too. Later Phil

Looking good. Did you end up using 3/16" or 1/4" balsa for the tail surfaces?
I might be inclined to lightening them up by boring some holes (fin, rudder and elevators) to give you a little more latitude with the battery position. With the light weight motors, the battery often needs to be right up against the FW which is a little inconvenient. If you lighten the tail, you might be able to install the battery where you have it with the Rx behind it and the ESC underneath in the front bay. The 4 servos end up being behind the CG (except retract) so it's good insurance - you can always move the battery back if needed but once you're at the FW, you're kinda out of options other than lead.
Are you in the covering stages of the 40?

yeah it's in the covering and waiting for a motor stage. Just won a thunder tiger .46 on ebay so hopefully i'll have it done here soon. I thought about lightening the tail surfaces they are made of 3/16 and i think some well placed lightening holes would do it good.Alright thanks for the link and i'll keep posting here then. Later. hey david. Getting ready to join wing halves and was wondering. The 40 calls for 1 inch dihedral under each tip. Would you stick with that or would change with the scaling factor also? Phil
