Nicely done Ed! Do take care of that TT.

Now, if you come across any one of those CC Tipo's in your travels, buy it and send me the invoice! I'll just put it out in the garden, crack a fresh brew and look at it gleam in the sun.

Actually I understand that Steve Helms might have owned one of them CC Tipo's - the Hippo with the exposed pipe along the side.

If I find one of the CC Tipos, I will buy it, send you the invoice (I would appreciate it if you paid the cost + shipping), put it on MY porch and drink a beer in your honor. IT could be that the planes were owned by somone other than Chip but I wouldn't know. I think I may try to contact the hobby shop owner (he lives in the area) and see if he can recall who might have purchased the planes.

Do ever sleep[8D]? It seems like you are always on RCU. It is nice to have you contributions to the threads though, as I learn a lot from the posts.

He, he...

The short answer is: sporadically. With little ones you sleep when you can. It's not as bad anymore though. A year ago was not great.

Actually, my computer is on RCU often, I'm not necessarily. I use a browser with multiple tabs and am not bad at multitasking when it comes to computer work - except when I have clients.

I'm glad my posts are well received - thanks. They're not always particularly thought out - I just write what's on my mind.

Given it's a holiday and gloomy, cold and gray outside, it's a good day to go an install some retracts.

Maybe we can both crack them brews and admire the pair of CC Tipo's. [8D]

Hi Ed,
Great memories from the '80. The contest that you recall with 88 contestants was at Mile Square and I was the CD. Myself, I stop flying RC in 91. Now I'm back flying and living in Cedar Park, near Austin. Are you flying pattern, now? My first contest after almost 20 years will be on May 1-2 in Kyle, near Houston. My plans are to go to Muncie this year.

Wonderful to hear from you. I was one of the 20 odd Novice flyers. The thought of getting six rounds in two days for 88 pilots is daunting/distressing. Now days we struggle to get six rounds in with 45-50 pilots in District 6. It is not poor CD'ing, it is that the current classes take quite a bit of time to fly the sequence. Yes, I too am back flying . I fly Intermediate. I have been mentoring a 13 year old (just turned 13) for the past three years and he is good but more importantly he has great potential. I am trying to get ready for the Katy TX contest on May 1-2. It is a really nice field with good club members and Glen Watson runs a good event. I will be flying a Shinden that is red, white and blue.

Rather than go off topic on this thread, send me an e-mail at: [email protected] and we can "talk"

Hi Paul,

Were you ever able to get those build instructions scanned.  I'm finally starting my build - sure could use them.

Hey guys, question.   What to use for an engine.  I have a pristine Hanno Special (MK I ABC) but was thinking it might not be enough for the Tipo 825.   Don't laugh.   I know the Hanno's a monster, I've got one in my Summit III and it screams but the Summit is quite a bit smaller plane.   I know the weight should come in under 8 lbs but I was still wondering if I should go with a Jett FIRE around a 90 or 1.00 size.   Would appreciate the input.

Hi Jeff, I had given them to someone to scan for me, it never got done.

I bought a scanner over the weekend and had a computer guy over doing some work on my website and getting the scanner up and running so yes I’ll send them over later tonight or tomorrow.

At the risk of sounding too stupid what kind of engine was in this airplane? I can't really make it out from the picture. Is it mounted inverted and if so then where does the pipe go?????

Tim,

my understanding is that this is one of Steve Helms Tipo's. I believe it to be the 825 squares version with the engine mounted inverted with an S shaped header bringing the exhaust to the top of the fuse. The pipe then runs inside the fuse top and exhaust out the bottom behind the wing TE with an exhaust diverter extension.

Note the holes to allow cooling air to pass in and out of the fuse - much like in Prettner's Magic.

The plan on this post illustrates the setup:

David/Tim:

Attached are a couple of photos of two pattern planes I saw in an Austin TX hobby shop (owned by Rich Schaffer) about 15 years ago. I took the photos because I liked the paint schemes and I was told that the planes used to belong to Chip Hyde. Last year at a pattern contest in Texas, I showed the photos to Chip. He confirmed that they were his planes and the ones which he flew in pattern in the late 1980's. The photo that Tim posted, if I recall Chip's comments correctly, is a Hipo Tipo. The second photo I have attached is of the other plane that Chip flew. Both planes were built for Chip by a gentleman by the name of Ron Gillman. At the time the planes were built Ron lived in Las Vegas and worked for Bill Bennet who owned Circus Circus (the hotel/casino and the hobby company). Chip was a sponsored pilot for Circus Circus and Bill Bennett had the planes built for Chip. I am not sure what the engines were but it appears as though they were not YS since there does not seem to be a hole in the top of the fuse to adjust the regulator. Might be a rear exhaust OS since my recollection of the time was that a number of the upper level flyers were flying OS 61's with rear exhaust. IF you look at the photo of the plane without the inverted engine (it is side mounted rear exhasut with the pipe extending down the right side of the fuse above the wing and appears to be the plane in the background of the photo Tim posted) you can see the last three digits of an AMA number (752). I don't know Chips AMA number but Steve Helms AMA was/is 13411 (see attached photo of Steve's Aurora from a 1987 pattern contest in Lancaster CA.).

I believe David is correct about the routing of the pipe inside the fuse.

Might consider making a post on the Patern thread (2 meter group) and ask Chip (screen name is Passport 1) about the planes.

Hope this helps
Ed

Guys:

Sorry about the size of two of the photos. Made a mistake in sizing them.

Hi Ed,
I'm trying to remember some of the happenings from the Nats 1983. About the picture showing the 2 Tiporares in Circus Circus colors, I'm positive that The Hipo-Tipo was flown by Danny Weitz. If you remember he work for Mr. Bennet. Do not know what engine he had in the Hipo-Tipo but on the regular Tiporare he use Webra 61. Also remember him working really hard to get the Dynamix carburetor to work properly. I do not know Danny's AMA number but the HT has a #81752, on the picture post #52. The Tipo next to it seems to be a Dick Hanson's Tipo with streamline longer nose. Your post #71 shows 2 different Tipos. The one hangins is a Hanson's Tipo, the other on the ground seems to the Great Planes Tipo, which has the shorter, wider nose.
Just my observations and hope that this may help.
Regards
Rene

Rene:

I am not sure of the history or ownership of the planes. I was relating a conversation I had with Chip last year at the pattern contest hosted by Arch Stafford. Chip was at the contest and when I showed him the photos he said they were his and this is where I got the info I posted. No intent to disagree on my part, just recalling my conversation. I wonder if we can send AMA an e-mail and not ask them to provide the individuals AMA number directly but rather, send the number and ask if it belonged to Chip or Danny. I joined AMA in 1964 and my number is 33996 so I have got to believe that the number probably dates to the 1970's (maybe late 70's or early 80's). I will contact an AMA friend of mine that may be able to help.

Later,
Ed

Wow that looks like it would've got hot in there. Not a lot of intake or exhaust air moving through the top of the fuse. Cool as heck for sure though. Thanks!

Jumped on a couple of Tipo deals just recently here. Bought a fuse From Rusty last spring and ordered cores and there not the right dimensions compared the a Great planes kit I just bought and I also bought one that looks like it was and original Hanson? WK hobbies#42? It seems that it has been sitting for awhile but is in good shape and just needs to be finished. Its all sheeted and sanded out and won't take much to get ready to glass. The wood appears to have been water damaged so glassing will add strength all be it some weight too. It still looks really straight too. Figure I'll go the Ultracote version with the Great planes kit that was untouched as far as building is concerned. Wish I had some better pictures of the 825 Tipo from above. I'd like to do that scheme on mine. The above looks like a totally painted version. I have quite a few engines to choose from and wondered what you guys would use.... I have new in box OS.61 FSR,,,, A nib Rossi 60 and rossi pipe and a nib YS.60 FS. Also still have a new Macs bent pipe from back in the day. I'd probably go with the E-flight electric retracts as there working quite nicely in my P-7 after about 35 flights. (snowing here now[&o]) I've wanted one of these since I was a kid now I have three,,, well maybe two and a half... Whoopie bring on that snow!

It looks to me that the fuse that you got is the Dick Hanson's. Back in the 80s, I went thru 10-12 Tipos. The first was a Great Planes, the rest were Hanson. I always use the Rossi 61, with the inflight fuel adjustment carburator, 11 3/4 x 7 1/4 Radio South prop, Rhom-Air retracts. Fantastic combination.
