My E-flite Deuces Wild appears ready to fly at 10lbs (137oz for plane , 24oz for two 4s TP V2 3300mAh packs). I tested the retracts in an upright position after filling the tank to almost 100lbs and got 11 cycles before the wheels would not go up all the way.

Time to measure the power level...

It was raining today so I measured my power level in the garage. I measured 50amps at 700 watts on the left side and 52amps at 720 watts on the right side. The difference could be caused by motor Kv, pusher/tracker prop efficiency, and ThunderPower V2 4-cell pack differences.

At 1400 watts and 10lbs, I'll get a strong 140w/lb performance!

The weather continues to be crappy so the Deuces Wild waits in a holding pattern on my backroom table.

A few bulletins were released by Horizon on the Deuces Wild.

Power 32 Motor Spacers
It has been found that the initial batch of kits had the wrong length spacers included for the Power 32 application. The length included was 9mm. The correct length is 5mm. These spacers are made of nylon and can easily be cut with a band saw, coping saw, or even and X-Acto saw. Future kits produced will have the correct length spacers included.

Flap Settings
The flap settings are reversed in the manual. They should be as follows:
Flaps: Takeoff-5/8-inch, Landing-1 1/8-inch

Our final good weekend of the flying season to make a trip to the club field came on November 2nd. My pilots, Paul Weigand and Lynn Bowerman, had a chance to test out the Deuces Wild while I worked the video camera. The plane flew great and was very powerful with the Power 32 motors! After the first landing, the right retract must have settled a bit because it became stuck on our next two flights. We belly-landed without issue using full flaps and power off. The Deuces Wild can perform many aerobatics and really sounds great in the air!

Although I cut off 1/4" of the ends of the Robart gear mains, it was apparently not enough. I would recommend cutting off 3/8" from the ends or lift the retract mechanisms up on washers so that the wheels can settle into the wells without pressure. My right retract became stuck because it pressed into the wing and could not reverse itself. It is nice to know that the Deuces Wild can be belly-landed without issue.

The APC 13x6.5 props do not leave much ground clearance. Our field grass was a bit high, because it was past our normal flying season, but we still managed to take-off without a prop strike. A better choice for props when using the Power 32 motors may be the Zinger 12x6 wood prop since it comes in both tractor and pusher rotations and can be easily painted. Since most of the aerobatics in the video never used more than 2/3 throttle, a small reduction in power from the shorter props can be tollerated.

Default RE: E-flite Deuces Wild 25e2 ARF

Hi, I`ve been flying the Deuces Wild for a few months now. I chose the E-flite power 25 option, as I already have lots of 3`s lipo packs. The performance is very good. The grass is a bit long where I fly so I use flaps for takeoffs only.... it seems to float in for landings without flaps. Reading your review, I also found that the main retracts were making a indent on the skin of the wing when retracted and so I had to cut off a small amount . I also fitted airline reducers too to slow them down.
The fairings can also cause the main gear to snag if the adhesive loosens, as this happened to me in flight....it had turned slightly preventing the right leg from dropping. Ended well though.
I`m currently working on fitting a servo driven hatch to cover the huge front gear bay....has anyone got any suggestions? any thoughts would be appreciated.

Hello, I too have this airplane. Great flying plane. I was using a separate battery for receiver power but have since changed to E-flite 60 amp ESC's with BEC's. Can I use both BEC's for a redundant set-up or will that cause other problems? I am using 7 servo's and worry that 1 BEC will not be enough.

Thanks, Keith

HI, I`M USING HACKER X70 SB PRO ESC`S, AND 7 SERVO`S LIKE YOURSELF. I HAVE DISARMED THE BEC ON ONE ESC BY CUTTING THE RED WIRE ON THE ESC PLUG AND TAPING IT BACK. I HAVE HAD NO PROBLEM AT ALL WITH THIS SETUP. I`M TOLD USING BOTH, CAN CONFLICT.

Thanks Louisben.
I have disconnected one of the BEC's and prefer not to add another electric component such as the Castle BEC. Just curious if any one was running both BEC's.

Hi Keith,

It looks like I skipped over this part of the setup in my review so please accept my apologies. When using the E-flite 60-amp Pro Brushless ESCs, you must disconnect one of the two BECs by removing the red center wire on the control line. The one ESC has plenty of BEC current to supply all your servo needs on the Deuces Wild. I marked inside the pod with black marker for "BEC" so I know to connect that one first when setting up the plane for a flight or just testing the control surfaces.

I am looking forward to flying my Deuces Wild this summer.

Go Fast,

When selecting a 3-blade prop, go 1" less than the normal 2-blade prop size so a 12x6 or 12x8 3-blade should work nicely. I have so much power with my Deuces Wild that if ground clearance proves to be an issue in 2009, I plan to test a set of 12x6 2-blade props.

Zinger makes some inexpensive 12x6 pusher and tractor props below.

Good luck!

I brought my Deuces Wild to the field this weekend to test out my retract fix. Over the winter, Iadded washers in between the Robart retract mechanism and the fuselage body. This allowed the retract to latch properly without binding. As the new video shows, the retracts worked perfectly!

My next change will be to test the Zinger 12" wood props. The stock 13" APC props are a bit long and tend to mow the grass during taxi and take-off. Since I have much more power than I need, the smaller 12" props should work well.

Yes, I changed to 12" counter-rotating props and saw virtually no difference in power level. The extra ground clearance was nice. I painted the wood props black so they looked nice on the model. The thicker wood hub required different adapters though.

Next season, I may try some 11x7 3-blade Master Airscrew props. They are black so they look nice but they are not counter-rotating. It will be interesting to see if I have any torque issues.

Thanks Greg, good to know. I also would like 3-blade props on there! I just got mine, so me may be going for a winter flight if weather keeps up.

Default RE: E-flite Deuces Wild 25e2 ARF

My wife bought me a Deuces Wild for X-mas. I maidened mine yesterday, and I have to say, I love the plane, and the way it flies, but VERY disappointed with the quality. Mine must have been a first run, because it still had the 9mm motor spacers.
The covering was very poorly applied, the whole entire plane had severe wrinkles, I had to iron the whole thing. I'm not talking minor wrinkles, it had RIPPLES! EVERYWHERE!
Also, the glue that was used to glue the wood to the fiberglass is very bad. Both battery mounting trays pulled loose in the Nacells during motor installation, and I wasn't even touching them. I had to reinforce everything with epoxy.
Next, after the maiden flight, I recharged the batteries and went to go up again. Once I connected the batteries, one of the latches for the battery cover popped right off, there was barely any glue contacting the lid, just a little glue down one side only.
Due to financial constraints, I had to go with the fixed gear option. The main gear mounting pads are set at an angle, I suppose it's to fit the angle of the wing Dihedral, but the angle is way off. The gear is splayed outward, and if I mount them to the opposite sides, the gear splays inward. I left them pointing outward for stability.

I think that E-flite should take a little better care on QC, especially if this is supposed to be their 'Platinum' series.

OK, with that aside, I absolutely LOVE flying this bird. It is very stable in flight, and very powerful. I opted to go with a different brand of motors, but the power is equivalent to the Power 32 setup, on 5S, spinning 12X6E props. All I can say is.....AWESOME! I had my flaps a tiny bit out of adjustment, when I did my in-flight flap test, the plane rolled slightly to the right, so I opted to land without flaps on the maiden flight. It glided in nicely, and settled down on the main gear very smoothly, no problems at all without flaps.

Other than the QC issues, I think this bird has a good chance of becoming my new favorite plane.

Beautiful plane, reminds me of a 1970's pattern ship, the Pica Dualist.

Hi Alan,

My recollection was that the flaps were turned on about half way through the flight. The Deuces Wild remains stable with the flaps on so we never noticed. Obviously, the top-end speed will be cut down with the extra drag.

I never got to fly it after the spring of 2009 and have gotten several 3-blade props to test. My EDF bug is still consuming most of my free time so we'll see when I return to prop planes again.

Best Regards.

Well, I got in 3 more flights on my DW today, and I love it. It's a big draw at the field, everyone really shows alot of interest in it.
I landed it with the flaps today, after I got them adjusted right, and it floats! Can't wait to fly it more tomorrow!!

Hey all! Here is mine, my fiance got it for me for xmas. Outfitted with HK motors, 60amp esc's and 4s 4000mah 30c packs. I put the 3rd flight on it yesterday, set the timer for 10 min and hammer down! Fun plane, mine bobbles a bit if the air isnt still though for some reason.. But it is a floater! Waiting on a nice day and someone to run my camera for more pictures.

Me up front, my dog in the back, with a few magazines, correct terminal chart on the dash too..
