Randy,
What's the all up weight of your Focus Sport?
I'm trying to do some calculations to fugure out which AXI motor to buy.
I'm thinking a 5320/18 should be about right with the 8S 3700 Zippy/Rhino.
Can you get through the Masters sequence with your combination OK?

Dave,
If you want to turn a 17" or 18" prop on 8S Rhino 3700, you need a KV of right at 300. Logical choices would be an E Flite 110 (295 KV), or a Hacker B50 14L (300 KV).
At 370 KV the 5320/18 would turn a 16" at most (and stay within reasonable amps).
I'm also thinking you will likely need Rhino 4900's for the flight time you will need for the masters sequence.

The 28 turn axi motor was recommended to me. I have not weighted it, but I am looking for 3 or 4 ozs of lightness for it. I would not call it light with all stock hardware. I am still flying too fast with too much throttle so the flight time is reduced. I could not get though the Master sequence with 3700's with my current flying style. In fact I am wondering I f I am going to be able to make it thought the Advanced sequence all the time. I am thinking of a bigger pack for windy days.

Randy,
The 5320/28 and the Power 110 weigh the same ( 495 gm ). What is your AUW with the 8S 3700 packs ?

Thanks Randy !
The 8S 3700's will add 1.75 lbs ...... so 8.75 lbs AUW.

Default RE: change Focus Sport to Electric

First 3 flights on my Electric Focus Sport today.
Setup as follows:
Motor - E-Flite Power 110
ESC - Castle Creations 85 HV
Battery - Rhino/Zippy 4900 2 X 4S
Aileron Servos - JR9411SA
Elevator Servos - JR 3421SA (2)
Rudder Servo - JR 8411SA
Receiver - Spekreum 9000 with 2 remotes
RX Barttery - Fromco Relions 2200 LiOn
All up weight - 9.95 lbs

Very nice flying plane. Plenty of power to fly P-09 (and then some!)
More trimming needed. I need to adjust the incidence/thrust to correct a slight pull to canopy on downlines. More work on throttle curve to get the power to come on a little sooner.
Plane needed one click of aileron trim and 2-3 clicks of down elevator off the board. CG seemed about right so far but more flights and trim work to further check. Probably need a little more right engine thrust by shiming the mount.
I'm pretty happy with it so far. I'll fly again tomorrow to continue getting everything sorted out.

Congratulations Dave !
I'm happy to hear you are pleased with the Power 110 in the Focus Sport. I'm guessing you might save 1/2 pound by going with 3700 Rhinos ..... but was afraid the capacity would not be adequate for your P-09 schedule. Glad to hear it has plenty of power in spite of the extra battery weight.
Did you use an APC-E 18x12 ?

I should have my Focus Sport today or tomorrow. Already have an E-Flite 110 and the rest of the stuff.

Had decided on this combo before I found this thread. It's a small world sometimes.

To save some weight all you need is a 730ma 2S Prolite V2 for your Rx. You will typically consume 50ma per flight. Maybe some carbon gear or a carbon wing tube can reduce your weight even more.

Actually, I needed the weight of the Fromco battery up front to get the CG close (and I already had it on hand). It's strapped to the motor mount. I could save a little with new CF gear and wing tube but the plane flys very well as is. It is a better flying plane than my Focus-1 I think. I'm not planning to use it for contest but to practice at home where my field is a little tight for the 2M planes.

I am in the throws of putting together a Sport Electric. I intended to make it a Prophecy but the Hyperion motor I bought just will not fit in the cowl. So, most of my first effort will be too much weight & way over power. I see the vents in the belly for the battery compartment but I do not see any provision for air intake. Is it not neccessary?

Also, I assume the slot in the cowl side is to adjust the motor mount?
No screw holes in the cowl either... are you using tape?

John,
I cut the slots in the cowl in an attempt to get hot air out from around the motor. The bottom front of the cowl (Chin) is all open so large amounts of air can get in. I also cut away a good portion of the firewall to get air into the fuselage to cool the batterys some and holes in the belly behind the wing to get air out away from the batterys. Seems to work OK as I've not seen any cooling problem. Motor and batterys have only been slightly warm at the end of a flight. Cowl is attached with 4 # 4 screws.

I did the same thing. About a third of the firewall is cut out to provide air to the batteries. My is in a straight line behind the big vent in the front of the cowl.

Appears to be a in-flight battery failure of one side of the flight pack. Since all that is left is charcoal it will be hard to do any post-flight analysis. Man the Li-po burn really good.

sorry to here about your E Focus, do you think it got too hot? How many slots/holes did you have for air passage?

Is that motor enough to give you plenty of vertical? I have the Hacker equivalent on my Inspire 60 with 6S 4000's and it would really be nice to know that motor with bigger batteries would work on the Focus sport I'm going to build.

Nixed,

I am really curious about the set-up you are using since I have the same motor. From your post it seems that you are using an 8S battery. By any chance do you recall what prop you are using? I would like to run a few numbers to see what the current draw would be as well as the input watts.

Thanks,

Teo

tph1,

This has been a great set-up so far, and vertical is great! If I were to change anything on this set-up, I would go with slightly smaller batteries. I think maybe 4000's would lighten me up a bit. Otherwise, everything else is great, she runs very cool. Forgot to mention the prop in my set-up, running a 15X7 APC. According to the stats for this motor, a 14X8 shows the most thrust within a safe margin of ampage for the motor. I decided to go with a slightly larger prop (diameter) and down 1 degree on pitch, to help slow me down on landings.

Thanks Nixed, Thats great news. I will get some Experience with the motor and batteries with the Inspire while building the Focus. What motor mount is that?
