Default T-Rex?????

Well from looking at another forum I have noticed that almost everyone has modified the T-Rex to eCCPM and reports vastly improved flight characteristics, amongst other mods. Is it really necessary to modify this heli to get it fly well?

I mean I cannot think of a single mod I had to do to my Raptor 50 to get it flying well. I did change the flybar paddles to increase cyclic response, but it flew well stock.

I'd like to get a small heli to fly at home and work. It must be CP and preferably not require serious mods to fly decently. I consider myself an intermediate heli pilot. All I am interested in an electric heli doing right now is loops, rolls and inverted flight, nothing real serious IMO. I'll leave the more serious stuff to my R50. I'm starting to wonder if I shouldn't wait a while longer i hopes that the small electric helis will improve.

TIA

Get a shogun 400, throw a brushless system and cf blades on it and you have one heck of a heli. I have one with an E-Flight 400 Brushless and cf blades with 11.1 2100 miliamp lipo, and it has about 60+ flights with no problems. OH I upgraded the tail drive shaft to an aluminum one. but other than that and the motor its all stock and rocks!!!

I have a T-Rex and have helped set up 3 more.
It does behave very well. Like all helicopters, setup is crucial. We paid attention to each and every joint, making sure that the ball links were friction free, correcting slop where it was evident, and setting all servo throws to give desired response. I have moved from being a hover-only pilot with my FP micro to FFF with the T-Rex. It does behave very well, and if you DO put it in the dirt, replacement parts are very affordable. My first crash was something like $11 (blades and a feathering shaft)
Now, I AM also looking at the CCPM conversion, but this is not driven be poor behavior with what I have now, but more because it has a lot of bling-factor to it.

Well I have considered the Shogun, but for some reason it just never seemed all that appealing to me. I guess it is in the same class as the T-Rex though. I'll start looking into the shogun a bit more. I guess I need to go to the LHS and look at both kits side by side as well.

I am certainly not 1 that cares a bit about bling. For me it's form always follows function and always will be. So if that's the main reason for the eCCPM mod then it's not worth it to me for sure.

I intend to go brushless and li-po on any electric heli I might get, anything else I'm sure will disappoint me. I really like the brushless/li-po combo on my 3D fixed wing park flyer. No doubt setup is a major factor. I don't mind spending lots of time getting it right, I spent many hours getting my R50 setup properly especially on the pushrods and ball links and was rewarded with a great flying heli from the start. On the first flight the blades were in track, trim was right on and control response was very good. I expect I'd have to do the same on any heli.

The Shogun will do a 200 foot climb out in about 3 seconds with the brushless system on it. Get one and try it!!!!!

I have the Trex ,had the shogun and have a JR Voyager E and the Trex flies great right out of the box with everything stock,I use the Aline 400 motor with a TP 2100 LiPo and it flies well,I have then upgraded to HS-56HB servos because of the faster response and carbonite gears but other than that it is stock, and back when I used the cheaper Hitec servos I used the ball link upgrade for the servo arms but since I went to the 56 servos they are much larger and the ball link throws off the geometry of the linkages and so I went back to the Z-bend arms and they work great with the larger servo arms of the 56.Now for the shogun I sold it because after flying my Trex, flying the Shogun was no fun at all it was not as good a heli as the Trex and so I sold it.It also was stock except for some paint if you look at my pictures in the gallery you can see the shogun in some of the pictures I even tried carbon fiber blades to make it fly better which was a waste of time and money. Now for the JR it is CCPM and for me the CCPM does not fly any better than the regular Trex and in some cases with the 56 servos on the Trex it is better than the JR with CCPM so I don't think that I would waste my time and money on the CCPM for the Trex I would just get the better servos.I even used the stretch kit on the Trex and did not like it and went back to stock.

3DPro,

What pinion are you using for the eFlight 400? I've got a 9t and I think I need to go to 8.

Also, which CF blades do you recommend?

Thanks

Well Moe I had even started looking at the Jr Voyager E so I am pleased that you have shared your experience with all 3. I think I will give the Trex a shot and see how it goes. Looks like the 56HB servos are the way to go from what you and many others have said.

Any experience with the Align gyro? I was inclined to get another 401 gyro until I saw that Heliproz suggested they liked the Align unit better on this heli.

Any chance my TP 3S 1320mah li-po's will work in the Trex, they are 10-12C discharge? I intend to get a pair of 2100mah for it as well, I was just curious.

Sounds the like the Trex is what I am looking for, a heli that will perform fairly well stock and the cost is reasonable as well. I have no intention of using anything other than a brushless motor in the heli.

I use the 240 gyro in both my heli's I just cannot see paying the extra for the 401 when the 240 works great as for the Aline it looks suspiciously like the Zoom Gyro which I have tried and is junk.As for the 1320 it would work but would not last as long but I have found a battery that I am going to go to that from what I have heard is better and cheaper look here http://www.maxamps.com/index.html?lmd=38405.062442 that 2250 mah battery is more power than the TP and is a lot cheaper plus if you join their web site the price goes to around $52.00 or so and it cost nothing to join. This will be the next one I will buy and they said that they would build me a 3S3P with 6750 Mah for around 180.00 with individual taps on the battery and that is better than the 209.00 I paid for my TP 3S3P with only 6000MAH.The cells that maxamps uses are the same ones that Tanic uses in their packs so they have to be good.As for the motor the Aline 400 works great so you really don't need to sink a lot of money into a motor unless you want to it is great for regular flying you see I am not into cutting the grass with my Heli's rotors but if that is your thing then you should look into a hacker motor. As for repair cost the Trex is the best most repairs will cost at the most $20.00 and some less than that unless you really do it in and have to replace the complete thing then it would be around $175.00 from HiFi RC.com.Also I would say that you look into a Berg RX for the heli since I went to Berg from hitec it is a difference of night and day with the Berg there have been no glitching or signal problems at all the Berg is well worth the extra money. If you have any other questions feel free to email me directly and I will try to help you out.

I have the 9 tooth on mine, i tried the 8 and didn't like it, it seemed as though it took a little longer to spool up, like it was straining when I punched the throttle. As for the CF blades I have the EF factory blades. I am thinking about going to the mavrikk blades if they make them for the shogun, I have them on my Raptor. The Evoflight works fine.

We've just recently gotten out shogun off the ground, and still in the setup phase. Remembering this is the first CP heli I've ever flown, it's an amazing machine. It flys well stock, with 2100Mha packs. We have a brushless motor and SC on standby. We have 3 different sets of blades (woodie like 90's, stock plastic amd CF). I heard for 3D flying, the plastics work best.

Hope you get one you like,

Scott

Doesn't your motor get hot? It's been cool here in Northern CA but on one warm day the motor was very hot and that with a heat sink.

Well I think a good pair of woodies or CF blades are best for 3D flying. The stock plastic blades are no good. The Fun Key CF blades are out with sizes for the Shog and T Rex.
