Hello Greg

I want to see the videos, but I don´t know how to get to them. If I touch the link, there is this message: "bad request".
Can you tell me how I can get to the videos. I´d be glad if I´d see them. Saturday two weeks ago I bought the Magister RTF-Set at an online-shop, but it´s not here yet!
I´m from Germany and I´m 13 years old. So please excuse my bad English! I read the thread about the Magister RTF which was opened from you, Greg, and I tried to
understand. It helped me a lot! You wrote, that the Magister is a great plane for beginners and intermediates. So I chose the Magister, but I´m not still a beginner,
I flew a few times at the modell-flight club at Gommersheim. There, I controled a 40-size trainer which was 18 years over the teacher/pupil-system. I can only say one thing: GREAT! GREAT! GREAT! That´s what I want to do in my free time. How does the Hitec Laser 4 radio work? Does it good? What do you think? How far can the plane fly away?
So thanks for answering my question

TP,

Brushed motor power level control has very smooth start up and can often be turned down to a very slow rotation. One of the first brushless motors for R/C applications used sensors inside the motor to detect rotor position and send it to the brushless controller. This provided an incredible slow start up with predictable feel. When the brushless power systems lost their sensors to reduce cost and complexity as well as allow interchangability between manufacturers, they all started up with a slight jiggle to sense the rotor position based upon back EMF before starting up. Once started, the motor control works smoothly enough.

Julian,

Try pulling the videos from review which is now published on RC Universe at the link below. The Hitec Laser 4 radio system is top quality and could be used on any giant scale application without interference. The radio system will control the plane much farther than the eye can see it in the air.

I managed to break the motor to propellor adapter when installing the propellor. Does anybody know where I may be able to find a replacement?

Thanks

Greg, I'm considering the Magister because it's big basically. Foam is nice too. The stock set up in your video seemed to come right up off of grass. I have the Multiplex Cargo that has four 400 motors weights around 4.5lbs and is likely made of the same material and I really like it. It shoots off the ground.

Would either plane come off of water with floats? I'd really like a set up on floats.
Would the 8cell 3300 NiMh have any more power or just longer run?
Is there room in this plane for 9cell 3300NiMh? More power and longer run on stock ESC.

Next step would be two 2100mah 3cells as I already have one and an ESC to handle it.

samstar,

Tower Hobbies sells the whole power system as a replacement [link=http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXJCJ6&P=Z]here[/link]. They list a 6mm adapter so probably a collet-style adapter like those sold at [link=http://www.hobby-lobby.com/propadap.htm]Hobby Lobby[/link] would work fine.

Carl,

I suppose it might come off water in stock form but you would really want the ESC/Lithium upgrade to reduce weight and increase power. I don't have any experience with the Multiplex Cargo but I have heard that it is powerfu so that it can carry a decent load. There is plenty of room for a 9-cell pack but you'll still need to upgrade the ESC since its limit is 8 cells.

The two 2100mah packs in parallel would also make a nice hop-up with great duration.

Good luck!

Greg,

I bought the Parkflyers Edge 540T instead of the Magister. I think I might have bit more than I can chew at this time.

Anyway, I had my maiden flight today. I hand tossed it. It was like riding a wild horse! It was a totally jerky flight with the plane going every which way any time I tried to control it. I just took it way up and slowed it down until I was able to control it much better. It was also a little too windy! Brought it down the best I could after about 5 minutes with a rough landing but no damage at all.

My second flight I hand tossed it at 1/2 throtle and that went a lot smoother. Still jerky movements, trying to make it go the way I wanted to go. Again, being windy did not help. This time I brought it down very nicely, it just floated on its way down.

I'm sure the Magister would have been a lot easier to fly. But, I hope I get to learn to fly the 540T soon without all the stress and anxiety!!! Relaxation is what I'm after with this hobby!!

Jmir

Jmir,

Relaxation and Edge 540 don't belong in the same sentence.

If the transmitter does not have dual rates then try reducing the control gain mechanically.

At the servo arm, the linkage goes toward the center for reduced gain. At the control horn, the linkage goes away from the control surface for reduced gain. Try moving one hole at a time and only at one end at a time.

So running the Magister with the Stock BEC ESC and Motor...what is the best battery I can buy to get the most out of it??? I have a feeling it will either be an 8/3000mAh or an 8/3300mAh. Though the latter may bit a bit too heavy?? In the future I will upgrade the Motor and ESC so I can run it on Lithium batts but for now I don't have the funds to do that so a battery change is my only option...Any recommendations for me? The stock battery that it comes with looks like the one in Greg's original review so I presume it's an 8 cell / 1900mAh and really doesn't seem to give the motor that much power and it certainly doesn't allow for a very decent flight time...[&o]
The manual suggests to buy another battery which is an 8/3000mAh. So maybe this is the best one to go for?? Does it matter if you run an 8.4V motor with a 9.6V batt??

Thanks for all the help...

Sam

Sam,

When the manual was written, the 3000mAh NiMH was likely the hot cell. Now, it is up to 3700mAh NiMH. Any one will work fine but you'll likely get a better price on the older cells from 3000-3300mAh. The big difference is in the battery technology jump from NiCd to NiMH. In the future, you can jump again from NiMH to Lithium.

The 8.4v rating of the motor is only nominal operating voltage, not maximum.

Thanks

I'm going to go and buy an 8/3300mAh this week. The one shown in the link below...

http://www.e-flight.co.uk/shopexd.asp?id=146

It's quite heavy at 518grams, but the magi should cope with no probs. After all it is meant to be able to tow gliders etc...

I will let you know how I get on...

What power set-up are you flying yours on Greg?

I was given the chore to test fly this machine and the only negative thing to comment on was the lack of power the electric motor provided. In-flight it behave like most high wing trainers.
Landing and taking off are uneventful. Due to the motors' low output takeoff runs are in excessive of twohundred feet.

Exactly, hence I'm going to upgrade the battery to see if it gives the motor that bit more power that it needs....

I made this comment to the owner of the plane an he agreed. An avid electric modeler at the field who whitnessed the flight suggested a replacement motor to the owner. The owner questioned this individual about cost and hes was told about $150.00 USD. When the owner heard this his reply was I can't afford it. This is not the first underpowered electric model I have seen fly at our location. It is my opinion that most over the counter electric airplanes lack performance. I have seen to many of these crash because of lack of power.

I have the edge 540t by parkflyers. It is a great plane, but there is a serious range problem. starts glitching about 700ft out. Did a range test, and it is very poor. I have writen Parkflyers and am waiting for a responce....

After Flying the Magister with the stock 1900mah (worthless) then switching to a 3300mah Nimh pack. (Heavy but flyable) I finally followed what Greg did and switched to the Jeti esc and Kokam 3s 3200mah lipo. Wow! This is just what this plane needed. Much more power! Lighter weight! This is now an acceptable flyer. I wouldn't reccomend the lipos to a newbie because of possible damage if you crash, but if you can afford it, go with this setup. Don't waste your money on the Nimh packs, go with lipos.

Hi Joe,

I am yet to fly my magister with 3300 Nimh due to the rainy weather aover the last couple of weeks. Is there much improvement over the stock 1900 Nicd and what flight times were you getting??

thanks

Really no improvement in thrust, just duration. I'm getting about 7-8 minute flights with the 3300 nimh packs. That's if I'm heavy on the throttle. You pretty much have to be because of the weight. It still won't take off from grass on the 3300 nimh packs, but you can hand launch it. I have 3 of these packs, so that helps. The lipos are the way to go with this plane though. More power and performance and longer flights.

Well, I'm still waiting for some decent flying weather and some free time to go and test out my new 3300 NiMh battery. It is a GP one and was rather expensive so I'm hoping it will give the plane enough power to take off from fairly short grass, will definately be annoyed if it doesn't!! So I'm presuming the performance of your Magister didn't really improve with the 3300 pack??
Looks like i'm going to have to upgrade to the Lipo set up. What Jeti Esc are you using Joe? Will have to do the Lipo conversion as cheaply as possible and that kokam 3s battery you're using is very expensive!!

I had been searching for a decent eletric trainer for a bit now but didn't like anything my LHS had. I just found this thread and ordered one of them, should be here in a few days.

Managed to get some semi-decent flying weather today so was able to fly the Magister with my new GP 3300 Nimh pack. It did take off from grass in the end but did take about 60 metres! Once up there was no massive improvement in performance as Joe said but the flight times are improved by a few minutes. However the plane did feel heavy with the new pack in it (weighs just over half a kilo!!!) and as soon as you take off the power the plane sinks, this did seem to make it good for landings though. I haven't tried any aerobatics yet as I'm only a novice pilot and haven't got the confidence yet - All my experience comes from simulators, and flying is a bit more nerve racking when it's for real!
I do really rate this plane and I think it must be really good fun to fly with a lighter and more powerful setup. Just can't afford all the upgrades at the moment!

Joe- Are you still using the Permax 600 brushed motor, even though you've upgraded to Lipos?

Yeah Sam,

I'm still using the permax stock motor. ESC is the Jeti Jes030 from Hobby Lobby. I wouldn't recommend the lipo's unless you have some experience flying. They're expensive at $120 for a Kokam 3S 3200 pack! How much did you pay for your 3300 nimh pack? I just purchased a second lipo pack and want to get rid of two 3300 nimh packs. Interested? They only have 4 charge cycles on them.

Cheers for the offer of the Nimh packs, however I live in the UK and want to save money for lipo's in the future...they are very expensive, but I feel the plane would be so much better if it was a bit lighter. I still have the original stock 1900 pack when I've used up the GP 3300. Though the stock pack is pretty useless!

So is the difference with Lipos worth $120 plus the cost of the Jeti ESC? or are you going to upgrade the motor too?

P.S does the Jeti Jes030 work with both brushed and brushless motors??

Are the lipos and new esc worth the money????? That's a good question. To be perfectly honest, if I had to do it all over again, I wouldn't even have purchased the Magister. IMOA, I don't think it's a good starter plane for electrics. Just for the simple fact that it's so underpowered and to get it to perform like the .40 size glow plane I used to own, you have to spend a lot more money on lipos and an esc. I'm already into it for $$$, so what the hell. This is my first experience with electrics (former slimer) and this has all been a learning experience for me. Plus I'm teaching my 11 year old stepson to fly on it. If your new to flying, I probably wouldn't recommend lipos and an esc. It requires a specific charger for the lipos which I happened to have already and the lipos are fricken expensive. The plane however is a drastically better flyer with the lipos. If that's what you're looking for and you have the cash and support equipment, then go for it. No upgrades on this motor, I'm done throwing money into this plane. A brushless motor would cost between $70-100 plus a brushless esc would be at least another $100. Too much $$$ for this plane. Next plane I get will be a 3D park flyer. Smaller and easier to fly in tighter spaces. Also less expensive. The Jeti Jes030 is for brushed motors only! Best of luck to ya! Take care.
