What is your RC experience level?

Why do you wish to start with the motor?

I have been flying Nitro for years.. Howver I want to get my grandson involved in flying and I'm starting with electric for him.... I was in TOLEDO and purchased two different foam kits called the flitter jet ,,, the indiviual I purchased them from sold me the motors(GWS s2) and ESC(5amp), however I built one and the darn thing is so heavy it just falls to the ground....... also the motor dies when I go to full left stick trottle on My Futaba 6X

OK... know I understand the question better.

Never heard of the plane before.

I have some experience with GWS motors, but haven't heard of the designation S2. Not saying it's incorrect, I've only played with 100s and 300s by GWS.

Don't have the slightest hint why your motor cuts out on full L stick... sounds like possibly some sort of mixing thing in your transmitter????

What size battery are you using... cell count and mah? The motor not providing enough power could be a battery problem. It could also be a prop installed backwards. Are you using an orange GWS prop? The writing on the prop should be facing to the front of the plane.

crazieflyer:

If you can find one, get an "Electri-Cub" kit. That will be a gentle intro to electrics for your grandson. Its flying characteristics might bore you, though. Avoid the RTF foamies. They wont teach you anything.

This is the site for my favorite ESC's, the astro 215D, and also Bob Boucher's excellent book "Electric Motor Handbook."

These two items should get you going.

I found a GWS motor described as GWS EPS-100C (2S) it's a geared 280 motor and can be found at:

http://www.aeromicro.com/Catalog/ele...7_products.htm

I'm guessing this is what you have. It is very capable of flying a light airplane.

The most probable cause for lack of power is either a battery pack not fully charged(new packs usually take 3-4 cycles to hold a full charge) and the previously mentioned prop on backwards.

One other possibility would be the prop size and pitch not being the most efficient.

More info on the GWS 100 is here:

http://www.aeromicro.com/Catalog/gws...2s__803598.htm

Note that the 9047 or 9070 do the best job. Also are you running Nicads or NiMH? The 6 cell pack is OK on Nicads, but a little weak on NiMh. I run 8 cell NiMh on my 100s motors. They may shorten the motor life a little bit, but much more zippy.

Default Info

Sierra,

Thank you for the input, I looked at the links, they look slightly different than the ones I have, the can on mine seems to be smaller in dia and longer. Besides they cost me $20.00 a piece, maybe I got ripped off. I have put the battery pack on the cycler maybe this might help any more suggestion welcome. Forgot tried the 8-4 prop and the 10-5, and 11-4...

Just a little guess here, but it sounds to me like the motor you're working with is a GWS IPS-DX 2S. Motor maybe 1/2" dia. x 1" long or so? I have a few of these, and they work great for me . It sounds (I am by no means an expert) like the voltage cutoff was kicking in on the speed controller, cutting the motor off. This happens to me sometimes with my nicad packs; I was able to diagnose it with my multimeter. Cycling the packs should help with the voltage depression...If this is the motor I'm thinking of, http://www.gws.com.tw/english/produc...system/ips.htm has specifications on this and all their products if you poke around a bit. I hope this info helps you.

Crazieflyer,

I'd recommend a Slow Stick. Good flyer and not so critical on weight. It can also be flown in some wind.

I too recommend try cycling the packs and then let us know. That may do the trick.

the little sig rascal is to me a lovely wonderfull speed 400 class park flyer, it comes in ARF or Kit, no bad flying characteristrics

last year I made a 55 minuts flight with it in a cloudy day, I took of, went under a nice cumulus, shut downed the engine and let it fly. I landed because I was afraight to fall without Rx.

Crazieflyer,

If trying to get your originally purchased plane flying gets to be too frustrating, then I too recommend the GWS Slow Stick. For $35 you get the kit and a GWS S300 motor. It assembles in about 4 hours or less and everything you have purchased/own will work except you'll need a larger battery pack - 7-8 cell, 800-1100 mah.

It has an aluminum fuse stick and foam wings and tail feathers and a 46" wing span. Flies very well and is quite durable/repairable. Spare parts are available and of course the whole kit for $35 gives you spare everything.

I didn't mention this at first because I know the feeling of purchasing something and immediately everyone tells you what you should have purchased and not how to fix what you have.

Best of luck. Please post to this thread what you find is the problem on "motor cuts off on full left rudder" - that one really intrigues me.
