Default Toro won't rev

I recently purchased two Toro weedeater motors off of e-bay. They are new but factory seconds. I converted one for airplane use. The problem is it won't rev past quarter throttle without falling on it's face. Since the motor is new it has great compression and is getting spark, so I know it's a fuel issue. I've taken the carborater completely apart and it doensn't seem to be plugged up, main jet, ect... I've removed the white plastic cap covering the low end needle adjustment. No matter how I turn it, in or out, it doesn't seem to help. The engine will idle all day long, no problem, but when I accelorate the throttle the motor wants to die. I'm mechanically inclined and have converted many motors but can't seem to crack this case! It's a two barrell model. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I HAVE 2 OF THESE 2BBL TORO'S THAT I HAVE MODIFIED TO USE A 1BBL WALBRO CARB. THINGS FOR YOU TO CHECK ARE TO MAKE SURE YOU HAVE THE CARB GASKET ON SO THE PULSE HOLE IS OPEN TO THE PUMP. ONE OF MINE HAD THE CYC. BASE GASKET ON SO IT WAS BLOCKING HALF OF THE TRANSFER RUNNER OFF. THE 2 REED VALVE ON ONE OF MINE WERE BAD AND DIDNT SEAL SO IT WAS GETTING AIR IN THE TOP HOLE ALL THE TIME. YOU CAN CHECK THIS BY COVERING THE TOP HOLE IN THE CARB WITH UR FINGER THEN TRY TO GET IT THROUGH UR LEAN RPM SPOT. THERE IS NO FUEL ON TOP JUST HIGH RPM AIR TO MAKE IT GO LEAN AT HIGH RPM. MUST BE A POLLUTION THING. I HAVE 2 OF THESE CARBS AND THEY SEEM TO TRANSITION THROUGH THE RPM RANGE VERY GOOD. IV JUST WORKED ON MY PORTING TO THE POINT WHERE THE 2BBL IS TO SMALL. IF YOU CANT GET URS TO WORK WE CAN TALK ABOUT SOME KIND OF TRADE FOR 1 OF MY 2BBL'S. BOTH OF MY CARBS WERE SET PRETTY GOOD AS THEY WERE SO I DIDNT TRY TO CHANGE THE SCREW UNDER THE PLASTIC PLUG. KEEP US POSTED!!

Hello Farmer Ted, Jon

I purchased two Toro weedeater motors off of e-bay also. I converted one of them and at 3/4 throttle it falls off and dies. I test ran this motor before I converted it and ran really good. The reeds look good and so does the carb jet. How do you convert this motor into a 1bbl? Is this something that I/we could do? What about the porting you talk of, can I/we do this as well? I would like to get this motor to run like a raped-ape. My friend has this same motor and it runs great I don't know the #'s it turns but I know it's up there. It would be really cool to have one that can out fly his HA HA. So if you could tell us how to port and run a 1bbl. If you can post some pics.

Thank you for your help,

John

Farmer Ted- Let me see if I got this right... at high rpm, those reeds are open fully, but not to let any fuel in... just air?? If thats the case, couldnt I just ...in theory, weld the reed covers shut...then make a new intake..a.k.a. heat dam and fit a carb off of my 33cc homelite saw motor to it an it should run ok?? maybe open the intake port some( it seems kinda small) OR how about I make a new intake that would use my homelite carb and still use the reed system so at high rpm I would be dumping fuel into those ports for even more power??I know Im rambilng on but its late and now my brains ticking..

IF IT RAN GOOD BEFORE U CONVERTED IT THEN TELL ME WHAT YOU DID AS A CONVERSION. ENGINE PERFORANCE WILL NOT CHANGE FROM JUST CUTTING OFF THE EXCESS ALUMINUM AND ADDING A PROP HUB. CHECK THE COIL TO FLYWHEEL CLEARANCE, TRY TO GET IT AT .015. CHECK THE CARB GASKET FOR THE PULSE PORT ALIGNMENT. BEFORE THE CONVERSION U RAN IT WITH NO LOAD AND NOW U HAVE A PROP?? WHAT PROP?? RUN IT AGAIN AND PARTIALLY COVER THE BOTTOM CARB VENTURI WITH SOMETHING (FINGER, SMALL SCREWDIRVER) IF UR LEAN THEN THIS WILL GET U OVER THAT SPOT. CHANGE THE SPARK PLUG AND TRY .018 IF U HAVE A WEAK MAG THIS MIGHT HELP. MY 2BBL IN STOCK CONDITION ( EXCESS ALUM. REMOVED AND A PROP HUB) TURNED A MASTER CLASSIC 18-6 AT 7200 RPM. THE STOCK TORO 1BBL WAS 6400RPM AFTER A LOT OF MACHINE WORK THEY NOW TURN 8400 AND 7800RPM SO THERE IS MORE TO GAIN WITH THE 2BBL. KEEP TRYING. DONT FORGET THESE ARE REJECTS FOR SOME USUALLY SIMPLE REASON!!!

U GOT IT THE TOP HOLE AIR ONLY. A 1BBL MANIFOLD IS A LITTLE TRICKY TO CONFIGURE BECAUSE OF THE PULSE PORT PLACEMENT AND MOUNTING HOLES AND MY NEED TO ROTATE THE CAB SO THE SHAFT IS VERTICAL. THERE IS ENOUGH BOSS ON THE CARB FLANGE SO I DRILLED ANOTHER HOLE FOR MANIFOLD MOUNTING. I THINK ITS BEST TO GO TO A REMOTE PULSE HOSE. I USE A #28 WALBRO (11.1MM) I DONT KNOW WHAT THE 33CC USES FOR A CARB BUT UNLESS U DO A LOT OF PORT WORK ID BET THAT 11MM IS ENOUGH. IF U GET TO BIG UR LOOKIN FOR RPM TRANSITION TROUBLES. I MADE NEW REED PLATE COVERS TO DO AWAY WITH THE REED VALVES. YOU GUYS SHOULD GO READ THE (ANYONE CONVERTING TORO'S) FORUM, ITS A LITTLE OVERWHELMING WITH ITS SIZE BUT THERE ARE A FEW GUYS THERE THAT KNOW WHATS WORKIN ON THESE TORO'S. I THINK ALL UR QUESTIONS CAN BE ANSWERED OVER THERE. ILL TRY TO ANSWER WHAT I CAN FOR BUT PICS ARE OVER THERE.

Thanks for all the replies! I took another carb off one of the other toros I have and the engine runs fine....7300 with a apc 16-8 and the stock muffler. I for the life of me cant figure out why the other carb went to crap. Theres no dirt or anything anywhere, the gaskets all look good cant see any tears in the diapram. The only thing that I did do differently on this carb is I removed the throttle return spring. Maybe that did something ???Anyway, Im gonna make a new intake and try a single barerel walbro, make reed covers and give it a try for ****s and giggles. hope everyone has a Happy new year![8D]

THE BARREL ON A ROTARY BARREL CARB RAISES AND LOWERS AS THE THROTLE POSITIOIN IS CHANGE. ITS POSIBLE THAT REMOVING THE SPRING ALTERED THAT NEEDLE SETTING. COMPARE THE 2 CARBS TO SEE IF WHEN U ROTATE THE THROTLE ARM IF THE UP AND DOWN POSITION LOOK THE SAME ON BOTH? I WOULD BE INTERESTED TO KNOW WHAT RPM IT TURNS WITH A 18-6 AS MINE WAS 7400 STOCK AND I DIDNT TRY THE 16-6 BEFORE I MADE ALL THE MODIFICATION TO IT. IN MY THRUST TESTS THE 18-6 IS MUCH BETTER BUT FOR RPM THE 16-6 IS BETTER. REMEMBER RPMS ARE ONLY FOR GLORY THRUST IS WHAT KEEPS US OUT OF THE MUD. KEEP PLAYING THERE IS A LOT OF POTENIAL IN THAT MOTOR.
