Default identify this engine

I was recently given a 1/4 scale model with a gas engine. The only markings on the engine are inscribed below the carb. and reads:

#551
Custom
U5Q

The flywheel is stamped - made in USA

there are no other markings on the engine. Can anyone identify it for me?

Its either a Q35, or Q40 or the US Engines 35/42, they bought out Quadra.
the 551 is the serial number And the letters are USQ for US Quadra
If Dario Brisiglia is whatching (I apoligize on the name) He could tell you.

No Way guys,

I was given an Engine on the past weekend, looks identical. I have been wondering what that was. My engine says made in the USA in the magneto flywheel, but on the bottom of the engine it says Made in Canada??? Only other marking is an 81 on the bottom of the engine and on the back of the crankcase. I think that mine is much smaller then 40cc.
I started it last night, runs like a top idles at about 900RPM.

Any Help????
Regards

WAY.....It IS a 35 or 40, that one is a very old Quadra with points behind the flywheel...Quadra engines were made in Canada, sold for many years by Klaus Nowak...Bought out by a company called Plastic Engine Technology, bought again by someone else....US Engines was the last owner...The flywheels were made a a few different companies, Phelon in the US being one....They never made a smaller version, 35cc was the first, then came the others....My neighbor has a very old chainsaw with one of the originals in it...It's at least 30 years old.....Someone on here was the first dealer, he will set you straight....
I have pieces and parts for about 10 old Quadras here in the shop...Wanna see ?

Sorry to burst your bubble Rc,but the first Quadra produced was in fact the 2.0 which i happen to have one of.It came out in 1981 and it is a points driven engine. I'm not saying the engine in the pic is a 2.0 but it very well could be.

Sorry to burst yours but Quadras were made/sold by Trail Mfg in Canada....
From chainsaws...
Way before 1981...
We were using Q35s in the early 70s...
Which I happen to have parts/pieces for about 5 of the originals....
With points...
With the old stamped steel mount..
With the old steel hex prop hub...Or the Rual mfg aluminum hub...
I have an even older one, the spark plug faces forward, the plug wire is only about 2 inches long..It's from the old original chainsaw..Over 30 years old...
The one in the pic has a later aluminum hub...
You can find out about everything Quadra from Klaus Nowak at his new website..He's Baaaaack [;
Or Ron shettler, he was the first with Quadra airplane engines...WAY back when,,
Here's the OLD one
On the back..ALU
Made in Canada

I saw a twin twostroke (opposed type) in a gas station in southern Utah-- the owner was trying to sell it as an antique.
I asked and was told it was a washing machine engine - really
My mom had a single cylinder washing machine in late 1930's -you stepped down hard on a ratchet pedal to start it . then pulled a lever on th sideof th washer to engage the agitator drive. I think it was a Coronado.
I have yet to see any model guys try to convert these old turkeys to use in planes . anyone else know about these engines?
PS -you have to be older than dirt to know about these--

I must be older, had one of those in 1947..Made by Maytag, all cast iron, the base was the gas tank..No speed control, the carb was a needle valve...Solid brass con rod..On a Soap Box Derby car...
Mine was a single., they made a twin, some were adapted to lawnmowers...
The Maytag Store in Phoenix has one of the wash machines, restored, in the showroom...

Man look at all the old farts on here. LOL I wasnt even a twinkle in my dads eye when you guys rode washing machines. I used to think it was a joke when they said women used to like to ride washing machines but now I get it.

Dang Man you shoulda been thar when granny got her ti t caught in the wringer.
actually these old roll wringer warshers were dangerous and we got smacked up along the head if we snuck up too close .
TV wasn't around yet so seein clothes jump anound and watching the scum form on the hard water was good entertainment.

If it is, someone removed a riser from the very top of the cylinder head. The "riser" as I call, was used to secure the engine in a chain saw. The Q35 had the riser. Don't know about the 40cc version.

RC i stand ( sit in my case,) corrected. I have seen the same engine with the forward facing plug, but didnt know it was a Quadra. Who say's ya cant learn something new! LOL Question for ya though RC, since the 35's were made befor 81,when was the 2.0 produced for the first time? I know mine is a 2.0 because i still have all the documentation on it and it's copy writed for 1981. I originally flew it on a Midwest Giant Sweet-N-Low turning a 20-6/10 cut down to a 19-6/10. Got about 5600 rpm's from her and flew it that way for 15 years! Love the little engine to much to get rid of it,but i do know there are lighter and more powerfull engines out there now.So i don't fly it anymore! Any more info on her will be greatly appreaciated RC.

Thanks in advance
