Nice "Rocket science answer"! You basically call me a liar and insinuate that I am misleading in my advertising. And you have the audacity to ask me to answer your question about h.p. and whatever nonsense you want to come up with!
Geeeezzzzzz! What’s a guy got to do? Get a congressional act of Congress?
Never lie, and never minimize or gloss. Tell it like it is and let the pieces fall where they may. The truth always wins.

What difference does it make. LOL
I doubt if any engine out of China have been Dino tested other than to see what rpm’s they will do with certain prop.
I said something about this in another thread and the followers of that engine wanted me banned from the thread. LOL
Of all the videos I have seen out of China all they do is show rpm’s, If there is a video of one I would like to see it.
I think most of the manufactures just pull a figure out of there head for HP.
Humm, Lets see they say the 50cc class engine is 5.2 HP, Lets say ours is 5.4 HP and we will sell more engines.
Again, Buy what you like and from who you think will give you best support.
If you get more than 10 gallons through it before the bearings fail, Maybe you got a good one.

I agree! DA100 9.8hp, DLE111 11.1hp, DLA112 11.5hp, DLE170 17.5hp, DA120 does not have a h.p rating yet listed on the website? These are figures from each website so I am not pulling # out of a hat, these are from the mfg. of these particular engine mfg. So don't come back at me and tell me that I am misleading in my advertising! If you want to point a finger point it at these companies.

Just for a few giggles I thought I would post this.
The pistons that I get for my clone engines have the casting name ground off, A couple of them they did not do a very good job on and they say DLA.
Also the DLA say they are 56cc and the DLE say they are 55cc.
If you measure the piston of either of them they will be a 55+ cc, if you measure the cylinder they will be a 56cc. ?????
Right now of all the China made engines out there in the 50 or 100cc class engines I would put my money on either DLE or DLA.
From what I have seen they give the best support on there products form manufacture and the dealers of the engines.

Ok, now, its time for you to put up some answers. You are always accusing others of putting up statements with no back ground. Now produce:
1. Your statement about the majority of RC gas engines sold to the UAV market, hard to believe, give me some stats, and WHICH is the better one you refer to? Hard for me to fathom with all the RC'ers out there with gas engines. Must be one HUGE UAV market!
2. I have 5 gas engines, how many do you have? I fly mine week in and week out, gives some credibility to my statements.
3. Why does an average modeler really care about horsepower? Thrust is the basic concern!
4. The "Our little engines", it that engines you are doing the R&D on or the RC community as a whole? Needs clarification.
5. Your statement, " So some companies do have dynos,", precludes that not all engine manufactors have dynos so those are posting misleading information? Which companies have the dynos? We would all like to know so we can make an intelligent decision on which engine to buy.
Ijust don't understand why you continue on about the HP facts, measurement, etc. Are you a competitive engine distributor or someone who has interest in another type engine. Why don't you go harp on DL, DLE, DA and the others. I would like to know how they arrive at their HPratings they post. Once you arrive at an answer PLEASE come back with factual information to back up your claims!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Besides, not all of use are as fortunate as others when it comes to expendable income to use on hobbies, however, the China engine may not be the brand name one but it still gets the job done. I can guarantee on flying day they are just as proud of their "China powered/built" airplane as the one who has invested thousands in theirs.
Case in point: You don't have to have Nike Airs to play basketball, just the love of the game!!!

Lets just say the difference between a 55 and a 56 or a 111 and a 112 can be a meaningful as the addition of a couple of cylinder base gaskets, or as meaningless as a simple math error in a volume calculation. One needs to keep in mind how the BME 105 came about. Base gaskets.

I stayed awake late last night thinking about that statement about the base gaskets influencing the piston displacement, and I can't even begin to imagine any way base gaskets could alter the bore, or the stroke. Since engine size is based on the bore X stroke X # of Pistons... how does increasing the gasket thickness change any of that?
It's been a long time since I was in mechanics school, but I studied it for 6 years, and I was pretty sharp back then, so, help me out here, ok?

Ok my turn!. If in regards we are talking about the gaskets at the base of the cylinder where it bolts to the crankcase. If you increase the thickness of the gaskets you will indeed increase thevolume inside the cylinder. However thedisplacement will remain the same as you have just increased the volume of the cylinder thereby decreasing the compression ratio plus the piston to head clearance. Same idea when you use shims under the head between the cylinder. Also changing the compression ratio either up or down will change the static timing for the ignition which can also be done by using different octane fuel inverserly, higher octane retards the flame front and lower octane increases the speed of the flame front. Higher octane fuel burns slower than lower octane, this is a generic statement just to get my point accross. Octane also changes the chance of detonition (spark knock). Enough about fuel back to displacement.
Shims are used to increase or decrease compression AND head to piston clearance. They do this by increasing or decreasing displacement and distance between the top of the head and the top of the pistion.
I used to race go karts in Germany with 100cc rotary valve engines where the piston to head clearance was only 2 to 3mm and getting about 26.5 to 28 HP with tuned pipes. Engines were made by Pirelli and Komet, 2 and 3 port. So I do have quite a bit of experience in 2 cycle engines. I am a Master Diesel Engine Tech and build and repair engines from 5.9L up to 16L. Now we are getting into liner protrusion, head clearance, gasket thickness etc....
Bore x stroke = displacement. Bore x stroke does not equal cylinder volume unless the piston touchs the head and the head is flat, not domed.

DA and 3w use dynos to establish power output.....
I'm not lauding either of them but the point is accuracy matters. The issue isn't just DLA, it's all the manufacturers that post HP values without ever actually using a dyno to make those determinations. We see numbers everywhere saying so and so engine makes X HP but there is no basis in fact. It's all conjecture.
So the question was not directed specifically at DLA engines, but really applies to all of them. DLE, MLD, CRRC, etc.

Hurrah! I agree with you! However I believe there is too much emphasis put on HP. As I said before, the main importance is amount of thrust generated. RPM's + thrust + cylinder head temps mean more to me than HP. HP can be measured in so many different ways and can in some cases be misleading. Case in fact: Once upon a time long ago Johnson Outboards rated their outboards at the prop. However later on they did not rate at the prop but by the engine. WAY big difference. Just like a car or truck, the engine may be rated at 300HP, but what is the actual brake horsepower or horsepower delivered to the pavement, hence the use of the dyno. That is why I still say horsepower is the least specification I will look at. Give me a scale, a bunch of props, a tach and infared temp gun and I will tune your engine for the best thrust/engine performance level. HP is usless. That is why I believe you put to much into the EXACT way HP was measured, it means little, just a number.
I have drivers come in to the shop all the time and I ask what engine do you have? The first words out of their mouth is a Cat 550 horse, or a Detroit 500 horse. Means nothing to me, I want an engine model like 60 series, Cat C-15, or 3406. See everyone is hung up on horsepower! Horsepower means squat unless you can get those ponies to the ground or in the air as in our case.
Thanks Tired Old Man, you actually said something I believe.
But lets let dead dogs lie, he's been kicked around enough already. And Ibcinyou is just someone trying to make a living and I have not seen where he is boasting about HP. He can only give you and me what the manufacture gives him! I know him and he is a straight up guy and stands behind his products. You can't ask for much more!
Truce!

Some time has passed since the last post on this thread. I received my DLA112 from Hobby King on Friday and build a test stand for it this morning.[8D]
To cut a long story short, I was satisfied with what I received in the box.
Well packed and shipping took 3 weeks.
After connecting all the bits I fuelled her up with 40:1 mixture and primed the engine until the fuel started dripping from the carb.
Ignition was switched on and it started on the 4th flip, no problems. What I can say is that it runs smooth as a babies *****$e, using the supplied plugs DLA CM 6.
Only time will tell weather it was a good buy or not.
For the price I will certainly buy 2 more and still get some change for the price of one of the more known brands.
Well, this one is going into a Sbach 107"!

After reading most of this thread and the one on the other forum, I want to give my 2c worth.[8D] You know if one of these little pumps swing the same size and make prop at close to or the same RPM as one of the more known brands, and it is reliable, what more do you want?[sm=confused.gif] If the price is 1/4 that of the known brands I will gladly buy 4 engines and keep them in my cupboard. But that is just me.
Some may prefer the status of running a 3W or DA or what ever, I want a reliable engine with enough power and don't care what is engraved on the casing.[sm=49_49.gif]

I am glad to see an intelligent coment regarding makes or copies what.
How many companies are producing ARFS and KITS called an EXTRA
Which one is the original. Which one is the copy?
Lets look at every plane on the market and answer that question.

I am curious about thing regarding the shimming of cylinders, and that is the fact none of the experts have even mentioned the effect it has on port timing. I know from my experience racing dirt squirts and mini hydro's how little change it takes in the timing to make a noticable difference. Port size and shape also have an impact on performance characteristics too, yet again, through this whole thread and others I have read, not one of these points have been raised. This reminds me of the dys when all us 'hoons' were souping up our V8's, everyone was worried about what cam and which holley carby the were running, with little attention to the rest of the motor. As with any motor, you build ait up from the bottom, good crank, topline bearings, and go from there.
Whhat brought me back here ( I have had health issues stoppin me flying my planes) was a good mate ploughed his extra in last weekend, and we took the motor out (DLA 112), and stripped it, and checked it right out. What surprised us both was the crank only got bent about .018", and the carby got a gutful of mud. This motor has had approx 30L fuel thru it and ran like a swiss clock and a new crank has been ordered. The internals all looked good, bearing were clean, well lubed, no slop or play anywhere, so it ill be getting a new airframe in the very near future. As far as quality of castings go, they were definately not inferior. All up, whn I get back into flying I will seriously be looking at a few DLA motors for various projects

To all,
I have never owned a dla engine, but I am about to try one out for myself as I did with dle. I use to buy zdz, but not any more because the dle has better quality than zdz and half the price from my experience. Also, I took a risk on the mld engines and got the same pleasing results as I did with the dle engines. I mean, really, would I rather try out a new engine for $350 and it be junk rather than purchasing...say...example: a da for $700 when it first comes out and it be the same piece of junk? I would try out the cheaper priced one of course. If any of you do not agree with that, then I would have to say your analagies are out of the logical domain. Yes, da has finally worked out the kinks(as atleast that is what everyone says) and they want to charge very high prices and still not reinburst you the shipping expense every time you have send it back to them. Well, from my experience, I start and fly all day long with my dle and mld engines while my counterparts consistantly flood the da's and always end up shipping them back a few times before they ever get them running right. And, I have more trouble out of my zdz engines when I take them to the field, therefore, I just join the crowd of troubles with the da guys. Again, this is based on "my" experience. Have I ever had to send a dle or mld engine back yet? Nope! And if I did, would I have to send it back to china with high shipping like everyone says? Nope! If you buy directly from China, they have a policy of just simply sending you the parts for free that you need to make the repair as long as you are still within the warranty time frame.
Can you prove that da is original? Can you prove that dle is original? Example: Lets say someone in china has an idea for an engine and someone in the U.S. has the same idea for an engine. Lets face it, it is very possible because combustion cant really get any more complicated than just simple combustion. Now, both innovators go for a patten. Lets say the U.S. guy gets his out first and then later the china guy gets his out finally. Did the china guy copy? No, he didn't. Would he get accused of such? In the U.S., probably so. AND it goes the same way vice versa.
I am not saying that dla is original or is not original. I am just trying to convey that we need to stick with logical sense in all of our analagies.
When da first decided they wanted to make their own original gas engine, did they just create the first gas engine? No, they did not. They had to apply their innovation from using the same combustion principles everyone else did that created combustion engines long ago before them.
Come on guys, we have technology because we use innovation based on previous proven products and scientific methods. Its called engineering and technology. Engineering and technology make our lives much much better. For example: I dont think any of you are still watching black and white televisions, atleast I hope not.
If you ever purchase a dla engine(dla 56 for example) and you test it for yourself and it performs as stated and is good of quality and service as the da, are you going to send dla an additional donation of $350 for a job well done? I dont think so.
On another note. Just because you purchase a dla engine and it does not work properly the first time, there is a "logical" possiblity you may have ended up with a bad one in the batch(most of the time, it is the carburator with any combustion engine). That does not mean all the others are going to perform the same poor way. So dont bash dla if the first engine you get does not pan out right away. Sounds like to me, DA had "plenty" of non properly working engines when they first hit the market. If I had my guess, dla has probably got it together way better than da did when they started out. And keep in mind, they all had to follow the same combustion principles and concepts.
Its a free market out there. If no one ever challenged a product out there, then we never would have the motivation or ambition to work out the kinks and problems before we sell them and the only guarantee we would have is a possible guaranteed piece of junk. And, we would still be watching black and white televisions. Either DA knew that they had kinks and sold them anyways OR they never tested their products before putting them on the market when they first came out!
Personally, I want to thank all contributors out there that want to make a better working product. Not only do these contributors assist me in bettering my life along with everyone elses whether they admit it or not, they also assist the ones making the bad products even better! Thank You DLE and DLA and DL for making better products. Also, Thank You DLE and DLA and DL for challenging other name brand engines so that they offer their customers what they pay for AND I thank DLE, DLA, DL for offering great products for those who are forced to enjoy their hobby on a budget!
In actuality the DLA engines are what I refer to as the better mouse trap. LA has taken their engines to a new height of perfection. The care taken in manufacture is quite obvious. The case is CNC machined. Many years back I raced full size cars. To get better performance original engines would be disassembled and the castings cleaned up and polished. This is whatwas referred to as Blue printing. This was done to increase the flow of lubricants and fuel as it passed through the engine on its way to the combustion chamber. Through DLA's use of CNC machined cases they achieve the equivalent of Blue printing an engine.
To answere your question before it is asked we are dealers in 3 different engine lines. Yes DLA is one line that we happen to import directly from the DLA factory. We sell , ship and handle warrantee work from our home base in Glen Allen VA.

Dear Sir. I have been running a DLA 112 sense early spring. I just had a prop explode on the ground, and need a new prop driver. The part that has the magnet in it. Can you supply the needed part? To see the DLA 112 fly a scratch built AirTractor 401B, click on the link. The plane weighs 55 LBS. and has a wing span of 132 inches.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O_xJKmfRDZk

Can you supply parts for the DLA 112? I had a prop explode on the ground, and damaged the hub. The part that has the magnet in it. This was no ground strike, or fault of the engine. It was a brand new faulty prop. I have very good luck with this engine, never a forced landing becaus of engine failure. Very happy with this engine.
