Another Extreme Flight Yak Flies in the U.K
Flew my Yak 87" today and it really, no really flew well.
Kitted out as follows:
Smartfly ignition cutout. (The only way to go for safety)
Smartfly Dual regulator (non turbo version) with failsafe and battery reduncancy.
2 x 2400 li-ion Fromeco batteries.
DA 50 and 3W in- fuselage front exhausting cannister.
Manual homemade choke.
Bob Violet Models canopy hatch at the rear of the canopy.
JR 8611 all round
Airwild horns on ailerons, kit supplied everwhere else.
1700 mah nicad ignition battery mounted in aircraft grade aluminuim cradle directly, over the engine for balance.
Carbon fiber sheeted, strenghened firewall.
Correctley routed closed loop rudder, not as indicated in the destructions.
Oh did I mention how well it flies, really smooth, great discision to buy this plane as I nearly turned down the chance to have it when I did and wait for the second, non existant batch.
The only issue is the engine was running a bit rich ( brand new) and put out quite a bit of vibration.
I ran it for 20 mins on the ground, stopped it checked the whole plane over for loose bolts,servo leads etc, then fueled up and went for it. I hope to get the engine running smooothly and enjoy.

I used the same exact mount and latch and ejected the canopy 2 times. Both times the latch failed. I switched to the BVM latch but the hobby lobby latch is a little easier due to a longer arm to get a hold of. The first time the canopy ejected it tore off 40% of one of my rear H stabs...but i managed to land safely(the metal latch broke out of the plastic sleeve) The second time the metal part of the latch broke broke in half where the vertical pin was tapped into the latch pin. Obviously there is positive pressure in the plane because of the open hole under the motor box. I switched to the BVM brand latch and am in the process of putting one on each side of the bottom rear of the canopy instead on 1 on top center.

Bummer... Can't believ you had two go bad... I've got them on 2-3 or my planes without issues...

A LOT of people have made the hatch latch mode without any issues at all... I had several flights on mine before I sold it and my buddy has a lot more on his. And I'm talking violent snaps, snaps from/to knife edge, spins, walls, etc...

The trick is to remove the vertical pin (it's just tapped and threaded. and then RED loctite it after final assembly so it doesn't come apart via vibration.

If you set it up to have maximum penetration though the canopy and loctitie the latch, you shouldn't have any problems at all...

The trick is to install it so that the pin when FULLY pulled back is JUST flush with the canopy back. This way it penetrates the canopy at it's maximum length and then some.

Your reports seem to me as if there was binding when you latched it, and that stress alone will wear the plastic out. If there is binding it can alos put a strain on the pin and perhaps it could snap at the hole it's tapped into.

Still a good way to prevent that possible problem is to wrap the latch and plate with a thin strip of fiberglass and epoxy. (Don't get any in the slot)


Mine, when finished, had no binding whatsoever. I just laid the canopy in place and the pin pooped in with no force. that's the alignment you need to not overstrss the latch.


Too bad noone makes a nice machined aluminum latch...

The BVM is a very nice latch too though... but that little sliver of a release isn't too fun I bet...

It doesn't show it in this pic but it looks like it would barely protrude..

What a coincidence that I was flying mine today, and here we are talking about it again.

I flew 5 times, 1 charge on the Fromecos.

I had to use the Mezjlik 22x8 while i am waiting for my 23x8's. Flew awesome.

Today was a re-maiden after changing to all 8611a's. 1 click left aileron , that's it.

I have Hobby-Lobby latches, but two of them..one top turtle deck, one left side. Primo.

I have not thought of the positive pressure aspect in the fuse on this one. I need to see if I have enough vent. I will not ever look for a better flying plane, this is it. I can't use the excuse "Oh, it's a better flying plane" , ever again.

Come on warm weather, I am starting a log on this bird, gonna see how much petrol it can burn this season.

Maybe someone will have to design one up and have it made huh?

Also, have you looked at that BVM latch to see if it could me modded? Maybe replace the little block with release with perhaps a small wheel collar that's ground square ad a long screw used as the release pin?

I did the latch install but used Neo's suggestions as well..I added foam tape to the canopy and glued a few small balsa blocks so the sides would not compress..The foam tape really makes it a nice tight fit..

My latches actually go into fuel tubing in the holes on the canopy,. Kinda snug fitting, the latches almost snap place when just released. But a gentle push, (and you can feel the pin pushing into the silicone fuel tubing) , and they are set .

I have the LE of the canopy taped for friction against the cowl, with a cloth medical tape, just enough to prevent rubbing on the cowl . Makes it snug.

Does the fuse need a vent hole in the back??? David?

We didn't provide for any air exit and didn't/haven't had any issues... that's with 3 planes total. Mine and two buddies.

I don't think the latches failed because of that pressure. They aren't the highest quality... that's Why I used tiny scews AND thick CA to attach the latch to the mounting plate.

My buddy Tom which HAS a latch on his Yak which is fine, had one on his vision "rip through the plastic". I think because he had some binding as it slid in to the canopy. The binding hurts it as you slide the slide in and out and rub the plastic hard.


Still if I was to do it again, I would attach the latch to the wood with CA and scews as before, but the wrap kevlar or that spiderwire fishing line around the whole assembly (skipping hte slotted area of course) and then hardening that with thin CA.

Wouldn't hurt to use a little white grease in the mechanisn and make sure to red loctite the release pin to the latchpin.

I have not been here for quite awhile. Can't wait to start flying my Yak now that the weather is starting to get nice.
Thought I would mention that the canopy came off last fall. The Hobby Lobby latch broke. The plastic body just couldn't take the vibration, and it shattered.
I just use two screws in the rearward holes now. The latch is a good idea, but the red plastic one is not up to the job.
Anyone know if I will be able to get a replacment?(canopy) I have not called EF. I might just leave it alone, it's just a couple of small cracks in the plastic.
