Aero-Works 50cc Yak

RE: Aero-Works 50cc Yak
Hi Mark,
What's you thought on using BME's new "Extreme 55" on this yak. Same power as a DA-50, but is a pound lighter.
Would this mess up the CG?
Chris

The BME will not work on this plane unless you want to add that pound back to the nose to get it to balance. The 55 is geared more towards 40cc planes that need the extra power but can't carry the weight of a 50. Good news though is that the yaks are in port and will be here late next week or early the following week.

Great news Mark! I know you have taken a lot of crap over the shipping dates but I am sure the airplanes will be worth the wait.

RE: Aero-Works 50cc Yak
what if those who use the bme55 also use a cannister muffler to offset the weight lose?
so in turn you would gain the benefits of the cannister with no weight penalty on the finished product

I dought it the can is set far enough back that it actually dosent offset the CG any more than a stock muffler does since the muffler is right up there. The way I see it is that ANY 50cc plane you put this motor on you will have to add weight to the nose espiacally on a yak.

I can't wait!! This is like Christmas!
So let me see if I have this straight. There are 2 "runs/productions" that were made for this first shipment, and half of them have the control horns installed and half of them don't. Is that correct?
Mark, have any decisions been made on who will get the planes with the control horns installed? Will it be the first half of the orders, the second half, or random?

Any news yet? I am anticipating a lot but, I have this urky feeling that I won't make it as far as being able to get one off of these containers. I didn't order till early March. I like the looks of this plane but flying season is coming up. I don't want to have to go elsewhere.

The only possibility for the BME 55 is to put the elevator servo and rudder servo up front and do pull pull on both surfaces. Also it would help to have a really light tail wheel assembly and control horns for the elevator and rudder. That would take at least a half pound out of the tail. Also would help to move the engine as far forward as possible, use a heavy spinner and muffler (Slimline pitts).

True. The other nice thing about the Yaks is that you can extend the motor way in front of the cowl without hurting the looks much, so there is an advantage there.
As for the servos up front, I also agree, but you could get away with a Dave Brown push-pull CF rod Y'ed to the two stab halves and one good servo, like 8611 or 5955.

might work, but probably not a good idea, because the elevator loads could easily distort the pushrod. And I always cringe when guys start talking about single servos on control surfaces. heavier spinner, carbon (not wood) prop, muffler, maybe even sub C nicad packs mounted forward, but don't give up redundancy or control authority. i've seen this plane in the flesh, and yes, one could move the engine a little further forward without creating an unsightly spinner gap.

Like AWS said putting one servo on the elevator is NOT a good idea. Think about what you are all saying A heavy muffler, heavy spinner, heavy prop, heavy batteries, and you will have to stick the motor out really far after adding all of this why not just put a DA on the thing with some carbon and your good to go.

I have a buddy that ordered one from Gene and he got a call saying that he might not get one on this shipment. Is this shipment sold out? He was also told that AW was changing in the colors for the future aircraft. Any truth to this?

RE: Aero-Works 50cc Yak
I just keep monitoring this thread to see how you guys make out with this plane. It is a great concept and a great looking model. That being said, I'm waiting to see if there are any issues reported from you guys. I was somewhat disappointed when I spoke with Gene at Troy Built sometime back and found out that the planes sold through him were being drop shipped from Colorado. It is only a 45 minute drive for me to Troy Built and always have pretty much picked up my parts right from Gene which saves on the shipping charges. He was going to get one plane in to display and build for himself, so at least I'll get a chance to see one up close.
Guys it will be interesting, so please post what you were charged for shipping. I would also prefer to see one 8/32 screw and control horn per control surface like the Nelson's instead of the sandwiched control horn/wood screw factory setup. I'm also very curious as to what you guys think about the supplied control horn setup.
