RE: PAU 36% Edge 540 Assembly
Thanks for the info, without cutting the cowl ring I could not see any way to get the cowling on with the mufflers on. Shooting for a maiden next weekend.

Part 2 of the DA-85 install. The header is now finally installed and I needed to cut about a 1/2" off of it. Although not necessary, I also cut out some of the firewall to make access to the carb a little easier. Trimmed the cowling as shown and it still needs a little touching up, but its pretty much done. All in all, it still looks pretty clean even with the 85.

RE: PAU 36% Edge 540 Assembly
I did my pre balance last night. I was very pleased to have the batteries under the wing tube. I thought for sure I would need them in the nose. They must be coming out a little nose heavy with the 100's? Seems like the 85 is a perfect fit for this airframe. I put a manual choke on mine, it was kind of a pain. I needed to extend the choke arm to make it work. Also what is up with the 3-48 threads in the throttle arm? Can you even buy a ball joint with a hole that size? I ended up drilling a 2-56 ball out to fit. I had to make a trip to the hardware store just for a a single screw and nut. Oh well b@%ch b@%ch b@%ch. I'm still on track for a maiden Saturday, weather permitting. I've been to busy working on it to take any pictures, I'll try to take some tonight. The install looks very clean with the absence of regulators. Also my engine mount and tunnel mod. look pretty cool.

That’s odd, my throttle was fine with 2/56 for both the 85 and 100. Do you have an earlier version of the 85? I am also interested in your throttle setup. I know how I am going to go about it, would like to see yours first. I may change my mind.

RE: PAU 36% Edge 540 Assembly
It turns out it's a 2-56 just a bit sloppy. I was using a metric screw by mistake it threaded in perfectly, but wouldn't go through the ball. I brought my camera to work today, but I forgot my USB. I'll snap a picture of my servo mount when I get home and post it with the rest.

What's up with the wood standoff? You could have used aluminum standoffs and saved some weight... Or do you like the sanding part...?

RE: PAU 36% Edge 540 Assembly
Here is my throttle servo mount, sorry about the picture quality. I was having problems getting enough light for a good picture.
It's basically just a box made out of 1/8" ply with the bottom of the servo about 1/16" off the bottom. Here is also a picture of my billet alum. engine mount. It came out a little heavy about 5oz I may go back when I'm a little less busy and mill another 1.5-2oz out of it. I also did a tunnel mod. I wanted to make it look as if it was designed around a single.

RE: PAU 36% Edge 540 Assembly
Well I managed two brief flights today, both ended in a dead stick after about two minutes. The airplane came down safely. I tracked the problem to a regulator switch wired incorrectly delivering 7.5 volts to the ignition. Totally my fault. I will say the 85 is a beast. It was ripping a 26x10 xoar right out of the box. I will call DA Monday morning and ask if my ignition should be replaced I imagine it's fine. So no real flight report on the airplane other than it needed almost no trim and it glides very well. The weather chased us out of the field early anyway and It's going to be worse tomorrow. 24 lbs 12 oz is my dry weight. I think less than 24 lbs. could easily be achieved.

Hey Eric,
Your plane is looking SWEET! Sorry to hear about your ign/reg issue.....DOH! I hate it when that happens!!!
I am really liking your motor mount, too! I have been making my rounds looking for a machine shop here that is willing to make one or two without having to pay the usual HIGH INITIAL set-up fees. Did you mill that "by hand" or did you use a CNC machine? If you used a CNC, would you be willing to send me the DXF file (or whatever format you might have used)? If I had that file, I think I could probably talk one of the small shops here to do a small run at minimal cost. I am also working with a local nylon manufacturer to get some "sample" material to play with just to see if it comes out lighter or cheaper than aluminum. Let me knw if you can help me out with that file.
Good luck on your next flights...hope all goes well and I can't wait to hear a flight report!!!
Regards,
Astrohog

RE: PAU 36% Edge 540 Assembly
I have DXF files for the outside and inside shapes. You are welcome to them. don't be surprised if a shop wants $150.00+ per piece for a short run. There is probably at least $20.00 in aluminum alone. Pm me your e-mail.

SWB makes a similar (slightly less sturdy) mount for the 100 and 150, both with and without angled thrust.
Hopefully (and with a little prodding) tey might also bring one for the 85.
They charge $85 per mount...

RE: PAU 36% Edge 540 Assembly
Well I snuck out to the field and got in one flight before my cell phone rang. My DA 85 ran very good the entire flight. I kept it up pretty high, I'm still a little shell shocked from the two dead sticks. The problem seems to have gone away. I did a little hovering it was very stable, I did a couple of rolling harriers which looked like it was happening in slow motion. The KE coupling was minimal but could use a tiny bit of mix. What really amazed me were the elevators it will do. It seemed like a 3m sailplane in a thermal. It just sat there and sat there, no wind. The landing was extremely slow, it looked as if you could walk next to it. I'm very happy with the airplane so far, we have good weather forcasted for the entire weekend. I'm hoping to get at least a couple gallon through the engine. I think the power will be ballistic once the engine is run in and I can prop it up. I will try to get some video and some nerve to bring it down low. I've never flown a 40%, but I imagine this is what it feels like.
