Hey, I'm not trying to slap you down, but there is a search button in the top right of the page that allows you to search this thread. I typed in the word ''cleaning'', and hey presto! 30 posts, with 10 pages behind it all discussing how to clean glow engines.
Tried your suggestion.

Unfortunately, neither it nor you wint the cigar.

Here's what came up:

RE: It's been a while....
I was wondering how much this truck would be worth operational? The only stock parts are the diffs, tranny, drive shafts, and I think this chassis is a stock one with the anodizing removed... I'm thinking about cleaning it up and taking it t a lhs and trying to see what they would give me on trade for a revo... Also I have some questions on getting this truck running right. The ez start

Even with my severely limited English reading comprehension, I can easily determine that this has nothing to do with cleaning glow engines. What went wrong?

Well, the second returned search result I found was this :

<font style="font-size: 18px;">RE: Club FOX!</font>
<font size="-1">[quote]ORIGINAL: Cougar429 Personally, the best method for <span style="font-weight: bold;">cleaning</span> I have ever seen is to go to Walmart and buy a small crock pot and a gallon of glycol anti-freeze. Heat the glycol and submerge the motor for a day or so. One added benefit of the glycol treatment is it is usually not harmful... method for <span style="font-weight: bold;">cleaning</span> of our toy engines. All the best, Konrad Edit: Added "based antifreeze"</font>

This is one such method for cleaning glow engines.  just like a google search result, you may have to sort through the results to find what you need.

This is a place to get dawn power dissolver which I think are located in Canada too.  They sell it in single bottles or 10 packs. I HAVE left it multiple engines soaking in it overnight with no problem. The results are great and it's biodegradable so you can flush it down the sink unlike antifreeze. <br type="_moz"/>

Not trying to slap you down or anything but if you have the time to tell someone to do a search, you have time to answer the question
But, it would take a long time to repeat ALL of the activity of the subject addressed by the search.
Then hit the back button and go on about your surfing. Better to say nothing IMHO
As a moderator, I would think you would be more helpful, than insulting and arrogent.

The suggestion of going to the top of the page to look for the "search" button was a very good idea by Altered1, and great advise as how to use the functions of this site. Couldn't you see that?

I didn't know about that feature. Thanks to Altered1, who gave that suggestion, I now know how to use this site a little better. Knowing this, I will use it, and be able to find information.
I gave Altered1 five points for his post. If I could take 5 points away from you for your post, believe me, I would.

I agree with you... thread offers nothing that has not been discusses time and time again. To bad you got slapped around by the moderator. Give a man a fish and he eats for a day, teach a man how to search and he stops asking dumb questions.

So do you want RC Universe to become just a dormant archive of old posts?

Five stars for that post.

If we limited all threads to topics never covered before, the site would dry up & go away due to lack of new activity.!

I just discovered this a couple of days ago when I wanted to clean up my old Fox 45. I happened to have some Mean Green cleaner/degreaser in the garage and thought I would try it. That stuffs works great to wipe off old castor oil. I just rubbed some on with a paper towl, let stand about 3-5 minutes and wiped off the old castor with my fingernail and small wire brush. It didn't harm my engine or cause discoloration. I didn't want to spend time trying to make it look 100% new again - just clean the outer surfaces and a little between the fins. Works good enough for me and its cheap. You can get it at stores like Family Dollar and Dollar General. Also, works great cleaning soot stains off glass window on a wood burning fireplace insert. I know its summer, but just saying.

I can look at this from both sides of the page. Engine cleaning (removing castor varnish) has been brought up time and time again.. I have probably read 50 posts in the last year pertaining to the subject. In each of those posts, the replies included the Antifreeze bath in a crockpot and Dawn Power Dissolver being the top two answers. Someone new to the site asking the question is a no brainer - not everyone understands there is a search function on the forum. I would expect a seasoned user to be aware of the search function and try using it before starting a new thread asking a question that has been asked many times before. I am not faulting anyone here, just stating my opinion/observations. I will go on to say that the search function on this forum is not the most ideal (its a Beta!) function as it rarely (at least for me) ever finds current or more-current posts. I've searched for my own threads/posts using the search of which I used the exact title of the post or several keywords I used in my post and the search never finds them (mind you, posts I've created within the last 3 months). In some situations, I've had to go sifting through page after page of threads to find the thread/post I was looking for. Does it work well most of the time? I think so, but only if you're not real specific of the search criteria.

I will go on to say that faulting another member for suggesting the use of the search function is not right or fair, especially for a moderator. AFAIC, Moderators are moderators for a reason. They should be knowledgeable, helpful, and keep the forums in civil order. They should not fault members for making suggestions that are in reasonable taste. I believe Altered1 to be reasonable for his statement, mainly because I myself get tired of reading the same questions asked over and over again only in different threads. I do a search before posting a question as to ensure I'm not asking a question thats already been asked. I word my search string a few different ways and if no results are found answering the question I have, I will post a new thread about it. I'm not 100% perfect, so sometimes I duplicate some questions but I try as hard as I can not to.

Again, I'm not trying to fault anyone here, just speaking my mind a little. I think we all deserve a little respect as I feel that most of the users that post here are knowledgeable and I'm very happy that so many are willing to share their experience.

Now back to the subject, I myself have used Dawn Power Dissolver with satisfactory results but have not tried the crockpot bath in antifreeze for fear of turning my beautiful engines black (most of my engines aren't made anymore).

My appologies to anyone I may have offended. I often see posts by, shall we say, grumpier members, that offer no suggestions and tell a new member to do a search. Frankly I get a bit tired of it hence my "if you have time to tell someone to go search, you have time to post an answer".

To be fair, the original suggestion to search was much better worded than the usual "why are you bothering us, please do a search before asking questions" replies that I see.

I agree with you 100% on this. I'll just add - If someone is going to post something that does not help the original poster answer his/her question, then that person shouldn't post at all.

Since we're talking about engine cleaning, is there any automotive chemicals aside from whats already been listed that works well for eating castor goo off? Examples like lacquer thinner or maybe even muriatic acid? I know muriatic acid would eat aluminum up for lunch but I just listed that since it was on the top of my head..

Nice!
The thing is, I've been verbally assaulted by my wife and come through it unscathed. What can be said to me in a forum like this that would be worse ?

Maybe this thread of the forum could do with a couple of Sticky posts

1. Cleaning Glow engines
-ATF and Crockpot on low heat
-Dawn power
-unsticking gummed up engines

2. Tuning
-basics
-how to start

3. Safety around spinning things

4. Running in a new Glow engine

5. Common running problems

I can see it both ways, 50-50. But, like Jim said, people are going to ask questions. A few sort of abuse it some, but the majority of members just want to learn a few things. Still, I see both sides of the issue. It comes up periodically.

You can look at it from another point; when I got into aviation in the Army it was just as Viet Nam ended. The vets pretty much wrote the manuals in rotorary wing aviation. A new guy never asked questions. You had to wait until someone decided to teach you something.

I don't come to this website very often because of what has happened on this thread. I came here today and this was the first thread I clicked on. Hmmm, guess I'll go back to the FG's where folks get along a little better and moderators stop this kind of thing. You people that post all this smart***** stuff, where are you? I go to flyins all over the place and meet people all the time, and I have never ran into anyone with these kindof attitudes at fields. For one, you'd more than likely get punched in the nose for talking to someone in person like you do on the site. Just think about that for a moment.
I guess you all start flaming me now, heh, go ahead, but I grant you you wouldn't do at a field in public. Be nice, we all love this hobby and we all need to calm down a little. And rcu needs to hire some mods that will do their job.

We did do something. It was not an easy call where to step in, or let members have the freedom to post and sort things out. I'm glad you have a favorite forum to talk rc even if it isn't RCU. Your tolerance of censorship is different than mine. Also, I would take issue with the so called strictness of some of the other places. In any case, thanks for pointing things out from your point of view. PM any moderator whenever you need to.

There's not going to be any flaming, right guys?

For mufflers a quick and nice clean up is to put a soft wire wheel on your bench grinder. It doesn't scratch them but cleans them up beautifully. You'll find the soft wheels right next to the hard ones in the hardware store. After using the soft wire wheel they are ready for polishing if you so desire to do that.

WOW !!! this has been some interesting reading. The search thing is good, but by asking the question anew, someone might have a NEW idea or solution that was not available in the search.

NEW ideas are just one of the functions of the forum.

You can't get NEW ideas from old posts.

So shut up about the search and let's go fly airplanes already !!!!!!

It's not really a stik, but built with some of the ideas of a stick. The wing has 20 degree sweep, no dihedral, and a built up stab. Powered by a OS .61 FS. The plane was built back in the 70's . I just designed another with 40 degree sweep and no dihedral and lenghtened the fuselage.
