RE: ASP/MAGNUM FS400AR Rebuild/Overhaul
Hi Tom, RCU has been having some issues past few days, and yes i a pleased with the new exhausts. i do have some extra elbows on pots 2 and 4 so that the exhaust residue was not straight in my face! on the videos it dosent sound much different i dont think, but when you are stood beside it there is a lovely soft rumble to it at low rpm. all i have to do now is fix up the plane it was and and get it in the air. if reliable then it will go in the sea fury. although i am tempted to try the 450 saito as its o/d is 250mm and the seafury cowl is 250mm. but tbh i dont think it will fit being that tight and i think it might be a little extreme for a 20lb warbird!

RE: ASP/MAGNUM FS400AR Rebuild/Overhaul
hey guys
I am installing the asp 400 in a kmp t-28 80 in wing...the engine is obviously a bit heavier than the gas engine i was installing...should i re-enforce the nose gear on the plane to accomodate for the extra weight?
any info appreciated....thanks

RE: ASP/MAGNUM FS400AR Rebuild/Overhaul
In my experience of KMP/ESM/YT models (they are all the same) some beefing up on the front end is always a good idea. I tend to stand the model on its nose and use zap finshing resin with about 30% epoxy thinners so it has the viscosity of single cream. i then pour it (literally) around the edge of the plywood firewall and move it all about so it fills the gaps, which have been upto 1/8 inch between the firewall and the wood. when i set i go round again with more resin (less thinner, mayb 15-20%) and fairly hefty glass fibre tabes. As its in the nose i dont worry about the weight, i would rather have an engine that dosent fall out!.
Regarding the nose gear if its anything like my P39 then definately have a look at it. i used a pair of 3/8 by 5'' longbeech (basswood in the states i think) to make it stronger. i just glued them under the existing 1/4'' crappy quality ply mount. i tested it by pulling it when the gear was installed and its going nowhere!
I look forward to seeing the T28

Regarding the Fw190 i love them, and they do a have a 'screw with me and die' look. if you keep the weight to about 18/20 lbs it will be very scale in flight with good speed and energy retention due to the weight. this model is only 2 lbs more than my 80'' la7 with an engine of very similar power (and stonking performance) and about the same span and expected weight as the sea fury i want for my engine and about the same as the zero as well, so i dont think you will have any trouble. I would personally go for the 190 and have a go at chasing all the mustangs and thunderbolts down your local field!

Well I found a 90" wingspan "Butcher Bird" that should come in under 25#.
The Don Smith FW190A is available as a "kit"
From Precision Kit cutters.
http://www.precisioncutkits.com/donsmith.htm
I was looking @ the Vailly Aviation FW190A-8 (pictured) but it's about 6# heavier than the Don Smith design. They're both whithin 1% of each other in scale, & the cowl of the VA 190 is 11" & the DS version should be similar in size so it should swallow up a Saito 450R3 W/room to spare.

RE: ASP/MAGNUM FS400AR Rebuild/Overhaul
I have seen that on hobby king and am tempted to buy another a sell my old one..or do a huge ass Beaufighter or F7f Tigercat anyway thats only £535 including delivery to the uk! i like, but...as my 'toys' budget is limited and i have the sea fury comming in a month, plusthejayracerneeding new servos and is halfway through a rebuild, and other general maintenancei need to behave
In other news my 1/6 scale Pica P40 successfully flew for the first time at the weekend. I have a bug list to work through, but nothing to serious. All i have to do now is finish the P39 and the Jayracer before the Sea Fury arrives! so much to do so little time

My finances have taken an upturn & will probably be able to buy that Saito 450R3 in a few weeks.
That would ease to financial burden a lot I would think.

RE: ASP/MAGNUM FS400AR Rebuild/Overhaul
It may indeed! but selling one radial and buying another might seem a little daft! also before i finally let it go i was going to try it in the sea fury, but i ampretty sure it wont fit as the cowl is 250mm and so its the engine. I just wanted to see for curiosity if nothing else. In any case its still yours in the quite likely event that it wont fit

Besides, you will have a pretty good chunk of change left over after the switch from Saito 450R3 to FS400R5.

RE: ASP/MAGNUM FS400AR Rebuild/Overhaul
Here is a report from me!
Since this engine has produced an oily mess and to me it looks like it is getting plenty of lubrication with ordinary 15%oil mix , i have experimented a bit with a fuel mix of 10% oil and 2,5% nitro and it gives it a bit more sharp idle sound ,and better running performance. Not loosing a cylinder so easy.
I will need to get some flight time with this mix ,but so far it seems like a good idea.
When i used 18% oil 15% nitro mix a couple of years ago it barley got warm ,so i dont think thats a good fuel for it. It is a different engine than a 60 two stroke running at over 10000 rpm.

RE: ASP/MAGNUM FS400AR Rebuild/Overhaul
Hmmm interesting. I use only 5% nitro on eveything and mine gets pretty warm. with 17% oil i do get a mess from the breather and exhausts. Internally the engine should not need alot of oil as the ball bearings and needle bearings will run even if only a little wet, the bushes in the slave rods are the only area of concern, but from the amount of oil pouring out of mine i think 10% oil would not be a problem as we do have 5 posts feeding one crankcase. Also Seidel suggest 5% oil on the radials they make, but i wouldnt risk going that low!

RE: ASP/MAGNUM FS400AR Rebuild/Overhaul
I'm going to make a (9 hour) trip to Pittsburgh today. I'll be picking up 5 gallons of E-85 on the way home.
The average price of E-85 is about $3.25 a gallon.
EVOX1001Q oil is about $13 a quart.
Saito recommends 20:1 mix for their gas engines & the FG 57 has the same part # for the connecting rod as the glow version 300TTTDP. Since E-85 has less lubricity than gasoline I think I'll try 15:1 for a 7.5% oil mix.
2 Quarts of EVOX oil will mix W/10 gallons of E-85 for 10.5 gallons of fuel mix. 32.50 + $26 = $58.50/10.5 = $5.57 a gallon!
I've seen guys running E-85 on glow W/O nitro. This guy is using COOKING OIL for lube!

I will be doing experiments for HP & fuel consumtion on my FA 150 W:
15% Cool Power on Glow ignition
15% Cool Power on C&H spark ignition
E-85/7.5% oil mix on C&H spark ignition.
I will check all 3 scenerios for max RPM W/an over load (for glow ignition) prop, a Dynathrust 18X8 & total run time @ WOT for a 16oz tank.
Maybe I'll even get some video clips.
I am also curious what different spark advance setting will achieve. the standard setting for C&H is 4 degrees advance static. Advancing 2 dgrees @ a time might yield some interesting results.

RE: ASP/MAGNUM FS400AR Rebuild/Overhaul
I look forward to your results as saitos are well known for being oily. Also if something is going to go from lack of lube it will be the big end of the rod as the bronze will pick up on the pin. if it lasts for more than 20 seconds at full power you are more than likely going to be fine.

That would be bad, i would want to eat my model...no, i will stick with my synth/castor mix. Some of the guys who had motorbikes and used castrol R or similar go weak at the knees when i give them a little blast of 2% castor, its a bit weird when they are all standing behind my model sniffing it....anyway, it is a great smell, and, castor is good for the gut! lol
Just dont use 20% or you engine will become black, 2% is more than enough
