Those are some pretty sweet videos. I like the way the speedy bee flew and will have to get off my butt and build one soon. Did you build it following the directions or did you make laminated wing tips for it? Also I like your spring landing gear on your lazy bee. It really took all the shock out of the landing. Thanks for posting the vids!

Mike,
On the kit version.....yes....laminated the wing tips. I know it sounds tedious.....but they are so strong!!! The ARF versions, Hobby People cut corners by making the wing tips as they did for the ARF version of the Speedy Bee. The ARF version wing is very delicate. An old kit or just scratch building is the only way for me. Just my opinion I guess. But....I have had a lot of Bees...

Glad you liked the movie. I was serching all over the house for more discs. But then it hit me....some of my best footage was lost on a burned up Hard drive. I had some rolls that were very axial.....I had a couple spins also. I really wanted to show it off for you. But....I guess I will have to make a better Bee and get more footage soon. I only have one ARF with a couple wings and Gyro Bee conversion mast. I really want to build a 40" again. I tend to go with too large of a battery pack sometimes. I just love to fly past the 10 minute point. So....I will sacrifice some weight for endurance. Just remember "back in the day" we would fly with heavy nicads!!!! LOL!!! The Bees will take on some weight and fly awesome.

OK...I have pontificated long enough and sorry to highjack the thread guys. I just enjoy discussing my first plane and probably my favorite plane of all time.

Keep the Bees Alive,

Carry on men!!!!

The easiest thing to do is do a search at the RCM site. They have the rights to the plans. Sometimes you can luck out on Ebay....but for me...I would go thru RCM. They also have rights to the Speedy Bee. You will have to check with them about the plan booklet.

There is a link here for plans for the Lazy Bee.... This [link=http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_7239459/tm.htm]thread[/link] is where I just got a copy the plans.

I plan on building one too. I just need to finish up 2 other planes first.
I hope this helps you out.

Hey Ya'll

Well I just can't wait any longer the plans have haunted me enough, so I figured that if I am going to do this the best place to start would be on the rudder since it has the tightest radius for bends for the laminating. So far so good waiting for the glue to dry I used that Elmers Ultimate glue since it has to be moist to activate it and the wood needs to be soaked prior to trying to been it around. I figure that if I can get the rudder made the rest of the plane will be a snap. I have 3 lazy bees to build two 40"ws for my two youngest sons and a 48"ws for myself. I'll keep you all updated on the build.

I thought the laminating was the easy part once the forms were cut. This plane looks small and simple, but took almost as long as any larger plane to build. The hard part was getting my fat fingers in there to hook up the servos, and I made a few modifications to the front cuz I thought even the little .15 was big. And all those frickin windows. I haven't flown it yet as it's been windy every time I go to the field. I had been wanting a LB since I got in the hobby about 7 years ago, but I waited too long and had to buy a kit off ebay for too much. I can't wait to fly this thing.

RS, looks real nice ! What did you use to attach your wheel shock to the fuse ?

The instructions actually had directions. Put a 1/16" or so wire all the way through, then a washer, a wheel collar, the shock, and another wheel collar. the axel is similar, but dont let the inner wheel collars pinch the fuse, so it can ride up and down.
Look at post 214 in this thread for the directions.

How is your exhaust pipe working? Losing any RPM?

I don't think I am losing any RPM's from the exhaust extention. It's inside diameter is twice the muffler outlet. One thing I did that seemed to make a big difference is I drilled four 1/16th " holes on the perimeter of the center baffle section which has one little hole in the center. It almost doubles the flow and also allows the unburned oil to run out the exhaust. With an 8-4 wood prop I'm getting 14,700 rpm static which seem real good. I'll be looking for aluminum to replace the copper as it's about 3oz. extra, and I'm at 2.75 lbs. now. With fuel I'll be at 3 lbs. which seems high for a .15 engine. The Trexler wheels are 3 oz. also, so may look into something lighter there too.[X(]

I have a .10 in mine with the muffler extension. It helps a little, just a little. My Bee is about twelve years old now. I gone through two sets of Trexlers over the years, and got tired of trying to keep them inflated, especially the tail wheel. I got some Dave Brown 4" wheels put them in my drill press and spun them to take the edges off to make them round like the Trexlers. I put the Trexler hub in and now I have fake Trexlers that I don't have to inflate.

Your Bees always make me smile Bolar. I love that Bee and looks light as heck!!!! I like your Trexler conversion idea.

Soo good hearing from you.

PS.....I too used to do the extension tubing for my Bees. It seemed to work a little better for a 4 stroke. Two strokes I tried it with....the rpmss were low....the motors were hard to tune and heated up fast as trying to lean it out becuase it runs so rich witht he pipe. Just my thoughts.......

Thanks. I've never had any problems with the simple (small) muffler extensions. If I remember correctly, Clancy back in the day, rigged up something like what Flight Risk has set up. It sure looks like it would keep the Bees cleaner. Usually though, there is some sort of trade-off with something like that (loss of RPM, over heating...). Maybe when it get nice I'm going to have to do some experimenting.

Thats it.....the lang pipe going to the tail. I tried so many times to get that to work on my Bees. Eventually.....this is what pushed me into electric conversion....

FYI:
The copper tubing I used is 3/8 OD about 5/16" ID, which I just happend to have on hand. It cinches up real nice with the little hose clamp.
I like the idea Bolar has with trimming down Dave Brown tires, as Trexlers can be a bit of a pain.

Over the years.....I have spent so much money on the Trexlers....I use only the foamie tires now.

See ya!

I went over the top a bit, with the wheels. I really like the look of the Trexlers and think the compliment the look of the Bees. So what I did was glue two 4" wheels together and spun the corners off. The Dave Brown wheels are a little narrow, with the two glued together they get fat like the Trexler wheels. Anyhow, I flew with them last summer for the first time, and it's turned out to be one of the best "Mods" I've done for my Lazy Bee so far.

hey- Just spotted your pics! Freaking awesom. I recently picked up a Speedy Bee and Lazy Bee on Ebay. Getting some great ideas from this forum. I may do one Nitro and the other electric. How is the 25 for power ? Nice color scheme. Hope mine turns out half as good as yours.
Rock on!

Billy;
DO NOT over power the Speedy Bee! I put an OS 20 on mine - it cost me TWO Speedy's

The first was lost because the wing dowel snapped in a loop, the second developed flutter coming out of a split 'S' BOTH because I had too much power. [&o]

Other than that... It is a great plane...enjoy!

Give some thought on how to bolt the wings on now. Rubberbands are a pain .
