Default Telemaster 40

Well, my dear ole pappy once told me, when you fall off the horse, get back up and on her back again! So after the untimely demise of the project before this one, I have under taken a new project. I was going to wait awhile before starting another thread, but I enjoy posting and being of some help for someone else who is looking for a answer to a build question.
I have been struck by the Telemaster as being a great build and a good plane to train on.
I started by studying the plans and instructions until I felt I had a good grasp of how this baby goes together.
I also purchased another set of plans from a fellow in Texas and they follow closely the ones that came with the Hobby Lobby kit.
I am adding the mods as pointed out in the instructions for using a larger engine. What motor you may ask, a Saito 50.
I have always wanted to put one in the nose of an aircraft and this is just the project for it.
One area pointed out is to add webbing to the stab and that is what I am doing @ this time.
I will post photos soon. I believe this makes 3 threads going on this design.

AHH! The Telemaster 40. The airplane I soloed on in 1994. I miss this airplane.

I recently aquired plans and an instruction book in hopes to have another. I look forward to your build.

Have flown a similar Kadet Senior 78" and Seniorita (equivalent to your Tele 40) with a Saito 52 4 stroke. Both did very well. 50 2 stroke will work fine but you will spend a lot of time throttled back.

For the present, have a 40 sized Funster ARF (upside down Telemaster) I will power with an EFlite 46 electric. Plan to finish mounting a Saito 90 twin on my Senior Telemaster.

[X(] WOW, I am impressed to say the least. You are a talented individual. Would like to see you do another with the plane being put thru her paces. The mods were just enough to make the plane interesting and functional as well. Job well done.

Ilikebipes, me too. Oh go ahead and build her, another going will be great.
edmoor, U tha man. I have looked @ many Telemaster's and have to admit, yours is just the best I have seen.
noveldoc, thanks dude for the info on the motor. I was a bit concerned if this was too much. I have no trouble throttled back, I'm a ole timer and slow and steady is fine with me. Any tips about mounting this beast.
Thanks to everyone for your interest and replys, hey, anyone who wishs to post a photo of their Telemaster, do so, will give me ideas as to color scheme.
Well time for church, hope all have and enjoy time with their Mom's, you will never know how differant today is when she is no longer apart of your life!

Start of build, stab glued up to this point. The red arrows de-note the additional webbing to include inside the top sheeting where rudder sets into. Fun kit to build, just a gaint balsa model much like a FF. Webbing added for the additional strength while using a larger than recommended engine.[X(]

I am in the process of scratch building a Telemaster 40 from an old set of H.L. plans that one ofour club members let me copy.I flew his 15 year old TELEthat he had poweredwith a .61 longstroke and I fell in lovewith it.I believe I will power minewith an OS .65 or .75but have not decided yet.I am eliminatingthe flaps and extending the aileronsand will set up for abolt on wing.I have raised thetrailing edge of the wingabout 1/4" giving a higher angle of attack Also verticalbracing is added between the longerons to avoidcovering sags in the fuse sides and shear webbing is added to the stab for strength.I have moved the fuse servosup to allow more room below forbomb drops and/or camera, etc. and the wing is equiped with duel servos. This is really a fun build and hope to have it completed in a month or two

Man I loved my old .40 Tele with a OS FS-61 on it..

The only mod I would recommend is to add some tail bracing or extend part of the vertical stab down through into the fuse.
The tail to fuse join was the major weak point for me..
Everything else was solid.

Interesting that you should bring that very detail up, I do plan to do just as you have suggested, this is the only thing I have seen that I thought could use a bit of strengthening. I will use a trick I learned long ago to keep from popping a rudder off, the rudder sets into the slot you build into the stab, then this whole affair is attached to the back end of the fus.
I will add bamboo dowel pins into the rudder that will be attached to a block under the stab/fus. This should add additional strength and stability to the tail. I also thought about adding wire bracing, seen this on another Tele, but have not made up my mind. I also was wondering since I was up-gunning w/a bigger engine, which was here today, but mailman took back to PO f/me to sign, I was @ work of course! Adding wing braces? I understand if you give too much throttle, you induce wing flutter????? Any help would be great appreciated.

Telemasters are great planes. You will have more than enough power with that engine. I watched Mark Smith (Marks Models) thermal the full sized telemaster for 20 minutes, he only landed because he got bored. Something they are great for is shooting pictures and video. They can carry a lot of weight with little effect on performance, and are large enough to carry a small digital camera.

I am a photo buff and one of the things I do intend to do is install a bay for a digital camera, use a app w/Iphone to operate camera while flying. Technology, wow.
Went to my home town PO and signed for a jewel I got off of eBay. This is what I plan to use to power this beauty with.
I have $140.00 in it and so far I feel I have got a great deal, as of yet to fire and see how she pops, but from what I have seen so far, I'm not too worried about engine run condition. Great compression and the bearings feel great.
Do have a few things to add, will order them this week.

I like the older Saitos better. You have a gem for sure. That muffler is much more astheticaly pleasing.

Nice engine.

Duco,
Everything is looking good! I'll be watching this thread.

I added basswood stringers (longerons) to my fuselage tail section, laminated them to the inside of the stock balsa peices.
This with the addition of 1/4" sq. zig-zag bracing added strength without too much weight.

The fuselage bracing, was this basswood as well. I agree w/the addition of laminated basswood longerons, however I believe I will go from front of fuselage longeron to the tail. I have seen this mod else where and got the impression, was great for strength and added a more stable tail section to the design. Looks like the kit since is made up of all balsa is a tab lite in the butt for a plane this size! I do not want to go overboard with added weight, but I do agree the kit, as kitted, does benefit from the addition of some basswood and or lite-ply. The addition of the plained engine w/the weight of it and the mods, should result in a well balanced weight distribution and stable flyer! @ least thats the idea.

Out freaking standing dude, and your own private field too boot. Some guys just have it all! The flight was impressive and the video was even better. Looked @ a camera outfit that includes a HUD that allows you to veiw what is going on while the plane is in the air, almost like a UAV , man that would be neat. Looking forward to the Telemaster flight. Just paid for a Senior tonight from a member here on the Forum who is just up the road from me. But alas, the 40 will come 1st. Have no plans this weekend, yard work was done yesterday and no honey do's, so should get a good deal of building done. Thanks for all your effort to post this.

Amen bro, I am a builder and I get the idea you are too. I am not knocking anyone who does buy ARF's, I just like to know how it was built before I put a wad of hard earned up stars to come falling to the ground because of a poor build and or glue!
