Lanier Extra 300s 1/4 scale kit
#301
I'm back. Been picking away at the hatch. There is a fair amount of work to get the hatch to fit just right. I found after trimming the sides to the trim lines that the front of the hatch was way too high. So with the FG hatch being somewhat see thru I could hold in down in place and mark where it needed to be trimmed to.
I have decided to use the supplied ABS turtle deck. I have read that it is heavier but I think this plane will come out nose heavy any way so I don’t want to go through the trouble of constructing some lightweight deck just to end up adding lead to the tail to get it to balance.

Looks good Nauset! The plane will be fairly balanced if ur using all the original parts. As you know these planes are considered heavy copared to todays standards. I intend to use mine on windy days and a pattern flyer. I have slowed on my project due to knee surgeries and lost some interest. As fish'n seaso is in full swing here in FLA. I will probably just fly and fish till Oct. In any case ur doing a fine job!!!

Rate - I've got a Magnum XL 1.80RFS four stroke.
Murf - Yes it can be tough to find the time to fly and keep the current fleet repaired and build on top of that. Hopefully the knee will mend quickly.
I'm on a little bit of a roll with this. I was getting sick of looking at all the parts lying around so I want to just keep plugging along. Sometimes it seems slow as some of the construction on this kit is new to me. I move much faster with conventional stick building.

Hey pb66,
Did you ever get your kit and start building?
Yes I think the Lanier name will linger around for some time as kits get sold off and also people resell unstarted projects.

I actually bought one and then sold it to fund another project, so yes and no, I had one, but never built it. I think it was sold to get a g-45 for my GP Pitts bipe I had. But as usual, I eventually sold that to go onto something else. I'd love to find another cap 232 kit or a taylorcraft lanair kit.

There are 3 models to chose from + a 30% arf:

Please let us know how that engine works out with this kit. I have been thinking about the same engine for my kit. Maybe on the building board next year. I have two more projects for this year.

I got the engine cutouts made in the FG cowl. Not to much cutting. I was pleasantly surprised when I discovered that the whole exhaust pipe and muffler fits completely in the cowl. I just need to add a Dubro exhaust deflector to have it come out the opening I made in the bottom for air flow.

stan's fiber tech was sold and it is now at www.fibertechnmore.com but the site isn't built yet. i emailed to see when they're going to be ready.
i've since chopped the canopy to single place and i'm completing a new one piece top deck. the plane was so banged up i had nothing to lose so i'm trying a couple of different things. i hope it flies well with the g23 i'm going to put on it.

Looks good Bart. Did the plane have the elevator servos mounted in the tail or is that a mod you are working on. I am considering the same on mine but am worried about being tail heavy and having to add a lot of balast to bring it into balance. Also is the turtle deck made from balsa

nauset,
it didn't have the servos in back but it had a glow engine in front so i'm hoping the g23 and radio gear in front will balance the servos in back just right. i'm also hoping the g23 will pull it around well enough.
the rear turtledeck is 1/64 plywood with a few stringers underneath and the front is 1/16 balsa, also over 3 stringers with two bulkheads between the front and back.
i'm really trying to keep from overbuilding it and i'm even willing to underbuild it and have it come apart a little just to see what i can get away with. it's all window dressing on top so we'll see how it goes.
regards,
bart

Per Drawings, Horizontal CG is at the centreline of the main wing tube (an inch in front of F2). Not finished mine yet so can't comment on how good it is.

i got a chance to fly my heavily resurrected extra a few weeks ago. i've had to make a few tweaks but it's amazing how much fun it is to fly. i wasn't sure about using a g23 in it but it pulls it around really well and does very scale aerobatics with enough vertical for three or four rolls on up lines.
thanks for the help.
