What he said. I have yet to have a nylon bolt break when it wasnt supposed to but HAVE had em break when they ARE supposed to and minimize damage in a crash. Definitely use the nylon bolts. Also the advice to cover the tailfeathers before attaching to the plane is a good one. Covering em while attached is a *****. I have always, till now, covered em on the plane and wont do that way anymore.
I built the .40 sized uproar and its a blast to fly.
ORIGINAL: majortom-RCU

The nylon bolts are more than strong enough for the task. Nylon wing retainer bolts are used on 1/4 scale and 1/3 scale planes. Steel or even aluminum would add unnecessary weight. One of the easy weight-saving tricks with most ARFs is to take out the metal bolts/screws/tee-nuts and replace them with nylon fasteners and threaded wood blocks. The only nylon fasteners I've ever had break off were on the landing gear, in situations where they were designed to release the gear to avoid damage to the fuselage.

If it were me, I'd cover the tailfeathers before gluing them to the fuselage. Saves lots of time and maneuvering.

Thank you both for the input. I can use all the help I can get! Just about ready to start covering. Can't wait to fly it. I have a new Super Tigre 75 to pull it around. Hope it's enough - this is a big airplane!

Hi Jerry35,

One thing that was suggestd to me for the Uproar 60 by someone on RCU was to change out the 2-56 rods that are on the Elevator and Rudder and go with 4-40 rods. I'm in the process of doing just that now on mine. Seems that the 2-56 rod, especially on the Elevator will flex quite a bit when under load. I've only had my Uproar 60 up one time, but it tended to feel mushy when pulling out of a large loop or dive for instance.
Be sure to post some pics when you complete the covering!

Hi Nitro125,

As I mentioned in an early post, mine came out a bit heavy at 8.5lbs. I'm not sure how well it would fly with a .60 engine. Actually I have only had mine out one time this summer. I never seem to be able to get out and enjoy the hobby especially in the summer time. It was only the 2nd tank of gas through my Tower .75 so I was running very rich and not peak. The plane seemed to have good pull though. You might be alright then with the .60 if you can keep it light.
As for the covering, it was not as hard as it looks. Basically the whole plane was covered in one color (Pearl ultracote) except for the flight surfaces (ie rudder, elevator, and ailerons) which was left over chrome monokote I had laying around. I sketched the flame pattern out on some poster board till I had one wing panel looking right, and then cut it out to use a a template for cutting the flourecent violet flames. To get the semetrical look for each wing half, I simply folder over two layers of the ultracote, taped down my pattern on top and cut both halves at the same time. With low heat the ultracote flames were ironed over the base covered pearl wings. The low heat keeps the bubbles to a minimum.
I hope to find more time to fly as Fall approaches. I need to finish breaking in the engine and see what this really can do. I was hoping for a plane similar to my Somethin Extra, only a larger version. I suspect it will be a fun performer.

I hate being the late poster, but may I ask how they turned out?
I was looking at getting an Uproar 60 for my Super Tiger 75. I figure I will replace the control surfaces so they are bigger, and see if I can get it to do some 3D stuff. How does the super tiger 75 pull it? Enough to hover? Just wondering.

Thank you,

I just got one as a gift...any updates on this plane? I'm looking forward to it because I've assembled ARF's before but this will be my first kit build. I'd like to see some pictures of covering schemes to get some ideas.

So far, I've built most of the elevator, started on half the wing, and redesigned some parts. For example, I'm not using the screw in the wing technique to hold it on. I also put the aerodynamic counter balance things on the elevator and rudder, as well as enlarging them. I'll tell you what, if your interested, I'll start a build thread. My goal is to finish or get this thing mostly done before the semester starts in September, cause then I won't have any time. I'll post some pictures later.

Hi,

You can check out my website if your interested in pics I took while building my Uproar 60.

[link=http://wydah.sky.prohosting.com/Uproar60.html]My_UPROAR_60[/link]

I purchased it for a cheap fun fly type plane. It hasn't seen a lot of flight time since I was plagued with a sticking throttle and then a fuel delivery problem (Kinked tubing). Hope to get some more time on it this fall.

Included below is a 2-view which Tower includes with the kit so you can plan your color schemes.

Have fun.

Hello W,

I just decided to build the uproar 60 so I stopped by the forum to see what was up with this plane. The price, size and weight would seem to make this plane a winner. Not to mention being open for a little custom work like your canopy, fairings and flames. The spinner is a classy touch too, well done that plane has style, thanks for the pics.

I want the canopy for sure ... what kind is it and where can I get it? I think I could see the part # for the wheel fairings in one of your pics, will they fit the stock gear that comes with the plane?

Along with the canopy and fairings I am looking at slight mods to the ailerons and tail section. Above all for the build I want to take every step to build the airframe light. Looking forward to trying some of the weight saving tips that I have read on this forum. Who knows maybe I can offset some of my esthetic alterations.

EJ

Hi EJ,

I bought the canopy from Tower Hobbies. You can find it [link=http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXJ932&P=7]HERE[/link]
The [link=http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXJ745&P=7]WheelPants[/link] also came from Tower and are actually for the Great Planes Extra 300S ARF, but they fit the 2 3/4" wheels I bought just fine.
Mine came out a bit on the heavy side at 8.5lbs, but the Tower .75 engine seems to pull it around fine for my taste. Mine hasn't seen a lot of air time. It's only been up 3 times. I think I finally have the fuel feed problem and sticking throttle worked out. Now if I could just find the time to get to the field.

Have fun with the build, and keep us posted on your progress.

Thanks ... for the links

I'm ordering the plane now ...

I plan to add your mods and make the empenage match the rest of the plane. While the rounded edges look good I think they need to be sharp corners like the the main wing. The vertical stabilizer is a little too vertical for my taste ... I think she'll look a bit sharper with a little more sweep. A little forward sweep on the rudder would look good too.

I plan to start with a OS 60 that I bought a long time ago. If it proves too gutless a .91 surpass will bolt up to the exact same mount and bolt pattern.

Hello

The kit is in ... I have never built a kit without some modifications but this is the first I have made plans to modify before I start building. The canopy and wheel fairing mod stole from WYDAH looks great ... thanks again.

I plan to start building as soon as I finish repairs on the dazzler as a result of my last Bob Hoover stunt. ie a power out high speed pass with a loop and a landing ... I failed to keep my speed up on the base leg turn and mushed it into the ground when I ran out of elevator. Oops damage wasn't too bad, not much worse than a really really hard landing ... well any landing you can walk away from or atleast with only one or two pieces. LOL

I have put the sticks together on my Uproar 60 and am starting to cover. I built it to specs but I will probably put the canopy on that was shown above. Here is a couple of pics of my build process.

Hello

The canopy is definitely a nice add on ... I guess the top access to the electronics bay will need to be put on the bottom. I figured I would address that while building the center section and fuselage.

I like your pics ... what engine are you planning to use?

Hi,

Yes, the center section piece is pretty symmetrical and so it was easy to just place the access hatch to the bottom-side so I could permanently glue the canopy to the topside.

Your building looks nice. Do you have a covering scheme in mind yet?

Hello W.

I was planning to email you about the moving the hatch to the bottom once I got to the decision point, I figured that was the way you handled it.

Site is cool, I studied your uproar pics for anything that might help with my build.

Thanks for the tip.

Now that you all mention it I put the darn hatch on the top so unless you guys have any ideas I guess I will forgo the idea including the canopy. I actually do have a scheme that I have started on. It will only be my second covering job so I am not going to do anything too elaborate. The primary color is black the underside is silver and over the wing ribs I have transparent orange. The wings will have a design on them using the silver and black.

Hello G.

My thought on that was making the canopy removable by mounting it on a base with a hook in front and a single screw in back. One screw to pop the cowl and you have access to your top hatch. With a very slight weight penalty. Top access is nicer than bottom access in my opinion, atleast you don't have to flip the plane to inspect or work inside the bay.

just a thought ...

Well I finally did something to my plane other than allow it to collect dust. The wings are now covered and I have somewhat of a scheme for the rest of the plane. Sorry it has been so long.[img][/img]

Life does get in the way of my RC projects, and I'm retired! One does what one can. The wings look nice and straight, the covering doesn't show any wrinkles (although mine usually do, seen from up close), it's a high visibility scheme... so you should be proud of your work. Stick with it, and you'll have a great time flying this model!

Thanks for the comments. I spent a lot of time trying to come up with a theme and I ended up drawing a blank more often than not. Finally I just said the heck with it and started laying colors. Even though you can't see it in the pics the bottom of the wings are a mirror of the top but instead of black it is silver and instead of red on the tips it is yellow. And no there are no wrinkles yet but I still have a lot to do .

The Uproar is finally done. I put a Saito 91 in it as close to the firewall as possible and put the battery behind the throttle servo. Having done that it required no additional weight to balance within limits. I put high torque servos in the elevator and rudder and standards everywhere else. After doing a couple passes to do some trimming I tried some simple aerobatics and hovering. I still am not great at hovering but this plane seems to do it fairly easily. I also didn't really pay attention to what the instructions called for on throws I just put it where I liked it. The video of the maiden flight can be viewed here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4wO5eekLN6M

Oh on a side note the landing gear is a little short and a 14x4W prop barely clears as you will see in the video at the end
