CubNut,
Great job on the Aircoupe. I'm not building one I just like to read through the kit building forum to pick up tips and tricks. I noticed in one of your earlier post, you said you were using Robart hinges and in another post with a pic it looks like you have a few installed on the ailerons before you begin painting. If you did install those hinges, how did you remove them when you were ready for priming? I have a CG Ultimate I want to get back to and I have some Robart hinges and would like to use them.
Thanks,

I decided to throw plane #1 together and let it sit out in the sun to cure the paint while I work on painting plane #2. As you can see from the pics I still need to paint the roundels on the wings and airbrush the red and white stripes on the rudders. I think it is looking good so far[8D]

Looks great !!!!
Well, don't you just love scale planes ? I have two of the Comanches that need building.......................
Those colors really pop ! Fantastic !
Can you hear them ask, " is that an ARF ?".
Tell them yes, $129 from Horizon.

A couple more pics to end the day,
I added the wing walks and painted the cockpit black and added the instrument panel. I am very happy with how everything is turning out.

It's looking great. Someday I will get back to mine. Most of the planes I have seen with the red and white ruder stripe had a vertical blue stripe on the leading edge of the rudder. Are you coping a particular plane that didn't have it? After all the work what did the all up weight come in at? What brand of paint are you using and how hard and resilient a surface did you end up with. I am thinking about paint over fiberglass.

Bassman,
Good Eye I still have to paint the blue stripe on the rudders, I am copying form a particular plane. The surface is fairly strong, not as strong as fiberglass but much stronger than monokote. The paint is Behr semi-gloss latex and the graphics are Testors Model Master paints. The weight minus aileron servo's,receiver and battery is 5.5lbs. Should wind up with a all up weight of 6.5 lbs.

Fantastic job. If and when I ever get back to mine I will use your pictures as inspiration. Where did you get the detail on the airframe panels and rivet patterns?

I picked up what detail I could from pics from this site and a couple other pics I found on the net. Here is a link to a site with some good pics [link]http://www.scaleaero.com/ercoupe.htm[/link] I spaced my rivets 1/4" apart. It takes longer to layout where to put them than to put them on.

Your Ercoupe looks great. I might have to order the Ercoupe and start a summer building session.
I have a couple questions;
1. Was the Ercoupe quicker and easier to build that the Sig Clipped Wing Cub?
2. Does anyone have experinece flying the Ercoupe? Is it a good flying aircraft? Would it fly like the Cub?
Thanks,
Ed

RE: JACK STAFFORD Models Aircoupe's
Its been years since I built my Ercoupe. I thought it was a tough kit to build. They do fly like a trainer at low speeds. However, they are capable of remarkable top speeds. They out run Super Sportsters !! You do need to pay particular attention when landing. The rudders and fins hang down below the stab. It is easy to knock them loose . I fly from grass. And its not that smooth. Bouncing around on the ground makes me nervous. So I generally don't do touch and goes. ( which was my original intention, a scale T-n-G bird ).
So, I generally grab a chair and sit down and slow fly the entire tank. It is hypnotizing to watch. But I am building the Ercoupe's replacement. A scale Sig Bonanza which I hope will be more T-n-G friendly.

Hi Ed nice to hear from you again
The Coupe is a quicker build than the C/W Cub, it is still a builders kit and it will reck your brain in a few areas but that is half the fun. I am guessing I have around 200hrs in each plane start to finish, not that bad for as much detail I put into them. I am also very pleased with the weight, JSM says 5-6 lbs. my plane with the OS .61 4-stroke(Old Design) weighs 6.5 lbs dry. Plane #2 with an OS .52 4-stroke (New Design) weighs 5.5 lbs dry. I can tell by looking at them that with all that dihedral in the wings they should be very easy and gentle to fly at low speeds like PilotFighter says.
If you decide to build one I will try to help you as much as possible with the build, I have alot of build pics that I did not post here in the build thread.

RE: JACK STAFFORD Models Aircoupe's
We sucessfully flew both Aircoupe's today,
The .52 4-stroke seems to be a perfect match for the plane. Most of the flying is done at less than 1/2 throttle. The plane with the .61 4-stroke is very fast and most of the flying was done at 1/3 throttle or less.
The planes are very stable and predictable at all speed ranges, they do tend to float on landing and will take a BIG BOUNCE if they are not set down very gentle. All in all I am very happy with how they fly.

I took a few pics of my buddy flying his Aircoupe, unfortunately my camea is not that good for distance shots. We put 6 flights on each plane today. We just finished doing a post flight inspection and makeing minor adjustments and making sure everything is tight.
We will be flying again tomorrow.

I have always loved the way the Blue and yellow color scheme looks in the air. Great job on the planes. Any issues upon post flight examination? I am still in the middle of another project. As soon as it flies the coupe if next.

The main gear developed a little slot in the gear block, I reinforced it with epoxy lastnight. I will see how it does during today's flying session.
