Im calling it a night... for my first night of building ever... I've almost got a fully completed wing.... gotten all the way up to completing the sheeting
and WOW, now I am addicted to building too!

I built this too (build thread somewhere here on RCU). You'll love it.
I agree with MasterAlex in that there is a special feeling of accomplishment when you fly something you have built.
One tip: take your time! You are building at an incredible rate. Going too fast may lead to skipping a step or not getting something right. Make sure you dry fit before you glue.
Like vmsguy I don't use CA very much at all - just for strengthening the threads in holes for nylon bolts and for CA hinges. Everything else is wood glue. When you use CA have a fan blow the fumes away and wear a mask. If you can, glue as far away from your face as you can.
Looking good!

You sir, are a building fiend [sm=bananahead.gif]
I go away for only a few hours and you've got 1/2 a wing built! At this pace you'll be flying it on Saturday
Glad you are enjoying yourself ... nothing worse than a build that frustrates. As has been said before, that's a great kit to start with - SIG puts out some great kits.

can't wait to get goin again

Alrigh! after about an HOUR of pure sanding and getting all the angles and edges right,
Heres the outcome!
I guess all I have left to do on this wing panel is to put on the wing tip and cut out the place for the aileron servo...
Hows it looking!? Im VERY pleased with this wing as it is the first thing i've ever build!
Also in the third picture you can see my question..
there was a little bit of over hang on the trailing edge bottom sheeting.. should I just trim this off?

Hey thanks insanemoon
heres the wingtip clamped and drying..
as you can see I only have 1 real clamp
and I know in building, this is probably the most useful tool
Im gonna go out today sometime and buy a pack of them!

Yes-trim it off. If you have a bar sander, lightly go over the edge until true-take your time on this. Carefull on how much you sand, not much material to work with and you don't want to distort anything like Ribs. Fun isn't it?

Looks right, when you join the wings with 30+ epoxy dry fit and check everthing for alignment. Use clamps if you have them and set aside for the day. Don't forget to glass both sides. Thinking of colors yet?

I'm just now laying out all the balsa for the left wing panel
and I haven't thought about colors until you said that haha
Im thinking maybe Red on the bottom, white in the middle of the fuselage, and blue on the top of the fuselage
and on the wing, red on the trailing edge, white in the middle and blue on the leading edge,
I may leave out one of the colors on the bottom of the wing plainly for orientation and make the bottom a solid color with
some pinstriping and trim, Idk though A LOT of time before that!

Regarding color schemes:
Since you obviously have use of a computer.. create some virtual color schemes before spending money on coating.
You should be able to find a 3-view of your plane. Somebody here on the forum probably has one. I bet there's one at the back of your manual you can scan. Anyway, fire up a graphics program, PAINT will work if nothing else, and color in your 3-view drawing. See if you like what you see. Experiment, do a few drawings.. Hey, even post them here for comments. Guarenteed you'll get 'em.
Advise #1: GET MORE CLAMPS! Everytime I went into my local home improvement store (Menards, Lowe's, Home Depot, whatever) I'd grab a couple clamps. They can be spendy, but if you get a couple here, a couple there, it doesn't seem too bad.
Advise #2: Get a big box of the #64 rubber bands. They come handy in building. Be creative.
Part of the fun I find in building, is figuring out how to accomplish something. How to clamp something together, how to make something work. It heightens the sense of accomplishment when you see your bird fly. It becomes more than a plane, it becomes a testament to your work and skills. And as you watch it fly, you remember your challenges and efforts. Only other builders can truly understand why you have that silly grin on your face....

Thanks VMS guy!
I Know I NEEED some more clamps! I have a lot of rubberbands for my other planes to mount the wings so I deffianatly have those.. about 200 of them.
Yea I saw a 3 view of the sig on another build thread.. I think it was the 4*60, but same exact layout.
Im enjoying this build so much, I now have all the ribs glued to the trailing edge bottom sheeting,
Much more simple then the first wing, as it's just a repeat and I know more of what Im doing now!
Pictures soon once I get all the ribs and spars in place

Just to make sure, you did start your second wing panel , over the left wing diagram on the plans ? Common mistake is to forget and end up with 2 right wings half .[

I know it's past Christmas, but if you feel like you're going to do a lot of building. Start making a wishlist of tools you'd like to have. Then keep this wishlist where people can find it, like magnetted to the frig. Then whenever there is a birthday, or other gift giving occasion, the givers have a great list of something they can give you... Make sure to list small things, like clamps, to big things, like a magnetic building board system. That way, the giver can get you something in their budget range. When you get something, cross it off the list.
Later in life when you get married, your wife won't have problems knowing what you want. Of course, be warned, turn-about is fair play, be prepared to see her list right beside yours. (Actually, this might be a GOOD thing, as the husbands on this forum could probably attest!

Alright its 1:20 here and I have the Left Wing panel completed exept for sanding the leading edge spar and just cutting out where the servo will go... waiting for some things to dry (Wing tip and some sheeting) and then I will get to sanding and cutting out that servo hole
I stopped becuase I have been working on it since about 8:00 this morning without stopping, so taking a break and watching some tv and getting something to eat! (thank god the girlfriends hanging out with the girls today!) I have all day to build

Hey everyone,
got the wings attatched together... had some problems with that
I got everything on the inside edges sanded as even as I possible could but for some reason it just did not want to fit together right, there is a bunch of little open spaces where the wood just didn't meet up
I used 5 minute epoxy and then when I saw all the holes I coated it w/ more epoxy and over the surface with the wood glue, do you think some wood filler or spackling will help me out here after its all dried? its drying now and I felt it and its a pretty strong hold but I KNOW it should be flush...
please help me out yall heres the pictures

Something isn't right-their should be no gap. Also you should use 30 minute epoxy. Fill the gaps with more epoxy at this point. You will have to use fiberglass on both sides. should try to clamp or tape it tight while drying.

Put a little at a time in the gap, wipe off excess so its flush with the top of the wing, this way you don't have to sand the stuff and the fiberglass tape will set down smooth and strenghten the joint.
