Grey Beard-
...mini servos like the HS 82 have the torque needed for your plane but the servo motors are pretty small and will burn out quicker depending on how you fly and how often. With the standard size servos that are tapered that are made today I don;t think I would go mini.

That cowl is really shaping up. It's starting to look very good. I think you'll be pleased you put the effort into it.

here's the pic's of the cowl all sanded down and putty'd up ready to paint and the paint going to be used for it. i got the cowl all primed up again and ready as soon as i get back from slaying some salmon with a buddy this afternoon. if we get anything. supposed to be kings and silvers in them waters this year. we'll see how it goes, since season just opened 2 days ago. no new construction on the fuse or wing though. i did re-read the instruction book again though just to get another warm fuzzy on the construction of everything. hopefully i will have the pic's of the cowl all painted and perty.

Is this one of those- "Had to be there" type conversations?????
...guys chasing pink fish???? [sm=drowning.gif]
If this is about fishing- that would explain my ignorance....

it ain't one of those had to be there things. the tribes get the first couple of weeks of salmon fishing when the season opens, and usually pull most of the fish out of the waters with nets and such. puts a damper on the rest of the season. usually though, they go after the pink salmon more than the others, i think. pinks are every odd year.

WOW!!! talk about blood red. not much chrome about it. it's more of a metallic look. i know the light on the KITCHEN ISLAND doesn't do much justice for it, but i think it really does look good, in the sun. now a want to get started on the rest of it, but gotta wait til the shop in the back yard is done and moved into it. i'm being evicted from the garage. for some crazy reason, the wife thinks that for parking cars. so i gave up half of it for her and now she thinks i need to park my car in there too. so i get a 10 x 12 shop in the back yard. how the heck do you get kicked out of the garage??? at least it's bigger than the 8 x 10 i used to have at the other house.

If you aren't from Wash. the joke may go over your head Brian. Just for grins I added a couple of photos. I was living in a mobil for years and it was small so I had to build a shed/shop too. It was for my dental lab but then turned into my hobby shop. I lived in the mountains outside of Yosemite so it had to get wired and insulated plus sheet rocked. I had air, water, and heat too!! I did find a shot of my Smith build taken 10 years ago. After I had the new house I was able to move out of the shed and the mobil turned into my shop. I really miss that, now i'm in another little box but have heat and air, that's a plus. I was a bird hunter and my down in the valley bird hunting friends would call up and ask if I had seen any bucks in my area. This shot was taken while I was on the phone getting that question asked. Nope, not a one, must still be in the high country!!!

well, i got the shed done and the floor painted and started moving in. i don't have a lot of time to do it with all the other things that are going on. the parents are coming to visit for a week on the 11th, and much still has to be done by that time. plus i still have to paint the outside of the shed. just primered up right now.i'm going to try to sneek out for an hour or two every couple of days for some "me" time, and get some more progress done on the mini.

Ya know,it's been proven that those critters with the horns on their heads are VERY DANGEROUS. If you need me,I'll be glad to come to your house at my own expense & eliminate those dangerous critters before they do any damage !!! Hehehe All kidding aside, ya got a nice looking place.

That place is in Calif. and I can't sell it, tried but ya really gota wanna live in the country. My new house and the Mobil are now rentals. I have always had a lot of big boys around but it is always right after the season and the rut starts. That place is only at 2 thousand feet and the bucks hang at about 4 thousand until the rut. Quail are another thing, I hunted them three days a week then ducks another three days. My wife is into football and NASCAR so I had a lot of time on my hands during hunting season. Vegas is a lot easier on us now and you can find a place to eat after 8PM. You don't even have to haul your own trash to the dump here, they have garbage fairies, you just set it out on the curb and in the morning it's gone. Vegas, a very magical place!!!
Those sheds are one of the best ideas around. I have one friend that got the two story and it's all finished and wired inside too. A very good idea for folks with no shop but need/want one. They come in all sizes. If you shop around you can save a bunch of money. The tough shed is the same thing but the name will cost you triple.

i know it's kind of off the subject of the mini, but if you guys ever decide to build a shed, please for the love of God, paint the damn trim first, before installing it. sounds a little harsh, but damn!!! what a pain in my butt. all went great up until i got finished with the main part of it. once i started on the trim, i think time stopped. then i ran out of paint. i'm a little relieved; it gives time for a break. so, onto tomorrow...

Painting is 90% preparation 10% application and 100% tedium with only a little satisfaction thrown in when its done. If I never have to paint another building again it will be too soon. All I can say is thank God for vinyl siding. I even vinyl sided my kids tree fort. It took half the time and will last as long as the tree fort and really not as expensive as it seems when you add in the frustration of constantly having to repaint.

so i've always been curious about going electric vs. glow, and with the creation of a new plane, i'm wondering if anyone would be able to help with figuring out what all i need to convert this mini to elec power. not that i'm going to, but i was just trying to figure out the pricing of what size motor and all the other stuff i would need for it. i know nothing about electrics, but getting fuel around here is getting hard to come by, unless you have a car, or feel like waiting for a week to 2 weeks. of course it's a .40 size, about 5-7 pounds (not fully built yet, so not sure of all up weight), and i want to fly it through some general aerobatics, and get about 12-15 minute flight times. what all equipment do i need, and what are everyones thoughts on switching? my thought is how expensive is this going to be? because towerhobbies has a magnum .52 4-stroke for 130.00 USD that i'm eyeballing for it as well.

With the batteries we have today and if you are just starting out in RC electric is another good choice of power. For those of us with a lot of glow and gas equipment on hand going over to electric is a big investment on top of all our other stuff. It's just so easy though, just install the battery and go fly, end of day there is no engine snot to clean up. It's just a big investment to get into it. You need a motor, ESC, a couple of batteries and a good charger. It's just hard for my old brain to keep on on things like watts and volts!!

Just think, if you go electric, you'll be giving up some of your cylinder index!!!!
Every man needs at least 7-12 cylinders between aircraft.

i'm not thinking TOO much about it, but it would be nice to just plug in and fly. i do like the sound and power of the nitro motors; especially the 4-strokes. i just wish a couple things with the nitro. not cleaning up the oil snot, not worrying about what kind of paint to use (no gun to shoot good paint), fuel going bad from not getting used (limited flyingweather in Washington), i could probably think of a couple more things if i sat here long enough. but mostly, i just wanted to post that the shed is to a "plane construction" point of organization, and i will be knocking a little out ata time, now, versus on the island in the kitchen. i got threatened with my life the last time. but anyhoo, let the fun begin. i was thinking about using wing strut material for the cabanes and N-struts instead of the wires and balsa sticks with the shaping and soldering and all that jazz. what do you guys think about that? would you think it wouldn't be strong enough with the gear type straps screwed to the ends and then into the wood blocks in the wings? i REALLY don't want the top wing seperating in flight. i'm just trying to come up with alternate ways of doing it. i should probably just stick with the plans. i just, SERIOUSLY hate soldering, and i want the struts and cabanes to blend in nicely with the fuse and wings. i don't want ugly points and the connections. i think i'm going to do up something like in the other thread with the "boot" looking stuff, at least with the gear. (thanks tospeed51J for the idea). also, cross braces between the gear struts, to counter some of the flex of the wire gear. but i gotta run and get working on some stuff with it. here's the shed ready enough to go.

Looks like the same shed I have in Cali. except I finished the inside of mine due to winter cold and summer heat. Because it was a lab when I built it I had a electrical outlet about every 10 inches or so. Harbor Freight sells a pretty good HVLP gun and when they are on sale they cost about 10 or 15 bucks. Can't ever go wrong with Klass kote paint other then the price but it's bullet proof!! Fuel doesn't go bad with age, just keep it out of the direct sun if it's in clear jugs. electric is just cleaner and easier to set up plus the motors don't require a tune up. Electric just costs a bunch then you need extra batteries or you will be waiting a long time between flights. Can't help you with the weather there. I moved when I was 11 and the webs between my feet didn't dry up and go away until I was 13.

so with the fuel, it's been in my garage or shed, but some is a couple years old... maybe half or 3/4 gallon i use for warm up, but other than that it seems okay. is the myth about sitting on the ground and sucking the life out of it true, or no? if it's bad, how do i get rid of the rest of it, other than pumping it through a motor and teasing myself without flying? i'm pretty good at dead sticking if i'm on approach or high enough up to call out an IFE, but what to do otherwise, you know what i mean?

well, i got a tad bit of work done. the cabane struts. i figured if i didn't want to do them at all, they would more than likely hold up progress at the end of the build, cuz i still wouldn't want to complete the steps. but i did them now so all i have to mess with at the end of the build is the soldering part and that should probably wait til i get them mounted into something that is going to hold them better than just my 2 hands. it took a bit of coaxing to get the wire started around them as well without any clamps. felt like i was cutting my finger tips pulling the wire tight. but here's picks of them.

well, i've been getting some progress done over the last few days. i just haven't had a chance to get on the comp to show the work. so here's a few shots of everything i got done the other day and then a few more of what i've finished today. the day is still young, with the wife at work, so we'll see if more gets worked or not.
