Default SIG Ryan STA special kit by Maxy Hester

After completing my latest project, I’m getting prepared to start and old classic builder’s kit by SIG. The Ryan STA special 200.
I tried this kit many years ago when I was younger and bit off way more than I was able to chew, I soon gave up and handed
this kit to someone I knew years ago and that was it. Fast forward to the internet several years ago and to my surprise I obtained
2 kits for the price of one!

I may do the same thing as before and scratch build this and use the kit as a template like I did with this project;
http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_8215532/tm.htm

I have already made copies of the plans to start; the motor for this is a Y.S. 140 Sport that belongs to my nephew so it’s going to
be his plane. Due to the outrageous power there will definitely be some mods and new wood as the existing wood is near 40 years old!!!

I just reviewed your Aeromaster build. Not only are you a very talented builder, but the build was very well organized and presented. Well done! The Ryan STA is one of my favorites and this may prod me to move it up on my list of kits to build. I'll gladly follow along But seriously, a 1.40 in this thing? I thought it called for a .91 4 stroke?

I believe I have this same kit..

I bought one partially completed at the TCRC auction a few years back. I'd have to look at it to see for sure.

I also have the kit NIB and plan to build it.
But a 1.40? it suits a 60 2s/90 4s at the most, doesn't it?
I may build mine as the standard two seater with longer flaps and shorter ailerons.
Looking forward to your build thread!

i'm another with a sig ryan NIB (i actually have 2....). been keen on this one for a long while, but am plodding along with simpler kits for now. it's such a wonderful looking airplane, i want to be able to do it justice.

there doesn't seem to be a lot of info out there in rc forum land about this kit, so i'm sure you'll have a very avid audience.

good luck, and regards, dave

Here's a really nice build of a Sig Ryan done for C/L Scale. In this thread there are several pics of the real "John Gosney" airplane before Gosney bought it. The airplane was modified for aerobatic competition by Bob Heuer in the Chicago area about the early 60's.

I was given a "partly started" old kit of this great model. I plan on a 91 four stroke.

I have started building and have considered maybe a smaller engine for this kit, I'm thinking of something like a Saito 1.00 or equivalent. The fuse sides have been shortened
to accommodate a larger motor and vibration dampening mount. I plan to utilize a new type of aluminum solder to fabricate a custom exhaust manifold, we'll see.

The stabilizer and elevator are completed and I replaced the stabilizer trailing edge with spruce to compensate for strength if
I do in fact use a larger motor, the guy wires will also be functional to help in holding things together. If I do go with overpowering this plane I may go with a theme for this
and adopt a modern hi-perf clone aircraft idea. where the theme is that this is an experimental modern with a retro style, like auto manufacturers are doing today
with cars... just a thought.

Here are some photos revealing the work completed on the fuselage, I have halted work at this stage
to build the wing. The wing is undergoing some serious reengineering. To cope with the power output
of the larger engine (yup it looks like the Y.S. is going in) it’ll resemble a more modern wing configuration.

I have started to work on the wing at this point in construction and the theme is going in the direction of restoring and modifying and old
aircraft to perform a lot like a new high performance plane. I am toying with the idea of completing this in an unfinished polished aluminum
fuse and aluminum colored wing and tail surfaces. This will require a serious amount of custom chrome plating to all the plastic which I
am currently looking into, this is now possible these days so it might be worth the cost if it can be done well.

The wing is going to look more like something from a newer build; I chose this to add rigidity and help alleviate the possibility of folding
during high G maneuvers, the tail structures are going to get similar treatment with the increase in hard wood to help maintain the original
appearance.

Your building is very neat and exact - something for us all to aspire to

How did you drill the holes for the hinge points? Did you solder a drill bit to the brass tube? Also what type of drill bit did you use to give such a neat hole in the balsa?

I have not used Robart type hinges before but I have bought them for installing in a 1/4 Tiger Moth (currently on the table). I have bought the Robart drill jig but your method looks like it could be more precise and is done with the wing on the board - easier to drill parallel to building surface!

For the aluminium finish would flite metal be appropriate, see link.

The Flite Metal Looks good, I'm going to look into this method for sure. thanks for the heads up.

Believe it or not the metal tube is 5/32 OD and an old as heck drill bit held in with nothing more
than fitting in tight, just got luck I guess. For the clean hole what I did was start with very
light pressure then let the bit do the cutting, what the pic doesn’t show is the exit, not as neat but it will
have a scrap piece of balsa to enclose the hole.

JW,

I'm keeping an eye on your Thread with great interest.

I framed this model, not the Sig, from plans I picked up in the early 70's.

I'm converting all my smaller unbuilt models to CL, including my Ryan.

Looks like you have the building ability under control for sure.

Thanks for this build thread and the effort it takes to put one together.

Keep up the good work, I'm part of your audience!

Thank all of you for the interest.
My goal with this one is to complete it in the polished aluminum look. Not shure how it will turn out
it will be my first attempt at a covering theme like this.

Hello JW.I guess all the closets have been searched for a new project. It seems I got the bug to build my STA a few weeks ago .I bought the Sig kit about six or so years ago and kept it on the shelf ,it seemed a bit intimidating at the time but after building a few other planes and a scratch built Waco I think I can do it justice now.I have used the plywood forms to build the laminated tail feather and wing parts before and that system works great.I also thought about using Flight Metal as well for the sheeting on the fuse .I have never used this product before but I know others have.I was also considering using the original plastic parts supplied in the kit as molds to make fiberglass ones.Any thoughts on this idea ?I like the work you have done so far and I will be watching your progress with great interest! It seems a few of the Waco Brotherhood are interested in the Ryan STA also. Jim (Supercubman, WB #56) started a thread on making fiber glass parts of all those ABS plastic ones that come with the kit. You'll find his thread in the Composites section. I have the Sig kit as well as an R. Schweitzer 1/4 scale (with plan & cowl). Both very tempting subjects.

JW, very nice build so far, well documented. Thanks for your efforts.

I have purchased from Fiberglass specialties before and they have good stuff.
What I would like to do is create a cowl with opening panels to show off the O.S.
120 Supercharged engine that may make its way into this model. Still have some
time to ponder this...

I recieved my sample frome FlightMetal and look foward to trying it out.
Hopeing to use as much of the plastic as possible covered in this material.

Another idea I'm thinking about is to have a light subframe under the cowl
panels so that the engine can be showcased, the OS is probably going in this
project so it will need to be cleaned and detailed.

Having opening or removable cowl panels would be pretty slick! Take your glass cowl and paint it up without drilling holes in it. Then (carnuba) wax it a few times, spray a few coats of PVA on it then glass over the panels you wish to have 'functioning'. What this does is allow you to make new subsections of your cowl from the mold you just created! Take your new mold, wax it a few times and spray PVA on it a few times. Now lay down your glass for the replacement parts you will need.
