Parkflyers Edge 540T
#151
Good to hear Jmir. 12x6 is probally pulling some amps with that motor/ive seen watt meters etc for around $50.00 that plug in line to get readings. they give volts amps etc. parkflyer esc is rated for 18 amps. mine has been fine running the 4200kv inrunner with gearbox and 12x6 so far. gonna put my 40amp esc in when i get the 480 outrunner/maidened my other mini edge... was windy only flew for a few minutes and landed.. didnt want to push my luck in high winds. flew it with same set up as parkflyers edge. picked up the 450bl outrunner for it.. waiting on 12x6e apc props. tested it inside with 11x4.7 and it had enough to climb out of my hand vertical no problem at full throttle/should have good power when i get the 12x6e's. gonna see how power and run time go next time i fly it.

Get Real,
I'm getting ready to do the motor upgrade for the Edge 540.
Where do you get the piece of wood to mount the motor?
In your photo, it shows that it should be cut to 3-1/25. Is that a 25th of an inch, or did you mean 1/4 of an inch?
What prop do you use? The 11 X 4.7 stock prop?
Everything else stays in stock form, right?
I have an extra Typhoon receiver. It should work with the Edge, don't you think? Event though the Edge has only one servo for ailerons, I would just plug it in where the Typhoon right aileron goes and it should work OK. This way I would have to carry only one transmitter and then I will have HI/LO rates with the Edge to make it fly smoother and still have HI rates for 3D.
By the way, I do have one of those ammeters, just have to solder some deans plugs to it.

Jmir.. the piece of wood is standard stickmount square stock/most hobby shops that carry planes will have a small balsa section with assorted shapes and sizes/id call local hobby shop to see if they have it in stock.. heres a link to some heavy duty stock http://www.3dhobbyshop.com/detail.aspx?ID=541 the stock i used was under $2.00 for 3 foot piece. the length is 3 and 1/4inch or like i marked 3 and 1 quarter inch is what i meant /this may very just a little depending on how you set your clearance for prop from cowl.. i was happy with that clearance on mine with that measurement . also if you use a higher grade outrunner that measurement will be much shorter for that type of install. the prop i use is a e-flite 12x6.. im using inrunner with gear box and it bolts rite on.. you didnt say what motor or gearbox .. if you run outrunner theres also a 12x6e by apc for outrunner use that bolts onto outrunner prop adapter no fuss. not sure if stock parkflyer prop hex is same size as e-flite gearbox size.. id use regular props anyway there available locally and have more choices. bsipro posted some nice pics with good detail for outrunner install.. everything remains stock except the motor cone which is cut to mount the motor stick. i'll be posting better pics of my install when i have time so anyone looking to upgrade will see good detail of both set ups and installs. typhoon reciever should work. good luck and let me know how you like the plane with more power.. if you can post pics to. thanks

OK, thanks for the information and let me know when you have the pictures posted. I remember seeing them in your profile but there no longer there.
I checked the AMPS on the 12 X 6 prop with the 850KV motor. On high throttle it goes to 12 AMPS. The ESC is rated 18 AMPS, so I should be OK. I was surprised. I was expecting much higher amperage.
The 11 X 4.7 prop using the 1000KV motor went up to 15 AMPS. So, I'm a little intrigued by the 12 AMP measurement.

Jmir.. try the 12x6 on your 1000 kv and then check amps
i think they will be a little higher
. pics will be up in a few minutes... been working on my edge since weathers yet again not good for flying today.

Heres the conversion how to. works for both inrunner gearbox or outrunners with stick mount. first step.. remove old motor and heatsink.. you will be left with this(look at pic). you can leave motor cone in or remove to make it easier to work with. trace the motor stick size onto top of cone.
#157
cut with exacto or similar tool on inside of outline(you want it to be slighlty smaller than stick at this point. make sure you cut flush with top of cone... if you leave a lip at top it will lean the stick downward and give you down thrust. then sand slightly and trial fit motor stick until it fits snug. this is what you should have when your done(look at pic).
#158
drill two holes at top of motor cone inline with motor stick. the motor stick length will very depending on weather you use a gearbox or out runner.. for inrunner it will be about 3 1/4 inches(adjust as needed) and make sure to insert motor stick in all the way to back flush with rear of cone you can angle stick to right slightly.. a couple degrees for better hovering. secure motor stick with 1 screw at this point(you dont need special screws.. any small screws that are slightly shorter than thickness of motor stick will work) put gearbox or outrunner on. trial fit cowl to make sure you have the clearance you want between prop and cowl if its to far out from cowl cut motor stick slighly shorter on motor end until its rite. once you have clearance to your liking secure motor and secure second motor cone screw. connect esc wires etc and your done.

I just noticed you also had an outrunner motor upgrade. Was that for the Edge also?
I want to try the gear driven inrunner. Conversion looks pretty straight forward.
The Edge flies much better with the 12 X 6. I'm having a lot of fun with it. Wish I had someone around to film some of the flights so I could show them as you've done with yours. I have the camera, but I usually fly alone.
Thanks again for the photos and detail descriptions!

Hey Get Real / JMIR,
I had a chance to meet up with Andrew from AWLHobbies.com He sells the art-tech version of the 540 t I picked up a air frame for a 540t (it had a little damage on the wing) for $60.00 I also picked up a Cessna 182 airframe. He has some Li - po batterys for a good price. you should ceck it out.
I also picked up a Parkflyer main wing / fus. the parkflyer main wing has a pice of tape on the wing buy Aileron the horn
other then that they are the same . now I can crash alot
. I will post some picture of my plane built up with new wing / fus.
the old one was getting a little ruff.
also I have been running a 11.3/8 prop on the 450 im going to try a 12.6 Im still working on the hovering but every thing else is there.
I really like this plane !!!

Bsipro.. thanks keep me posted on performance with 12x6... my props are on order/im running 450bl in e-flite edge and only ran 400 inrunner for first test flight. next flight will be with 450bl outrunner when i get props and if winds ever calm down.. 20mph plus winds past few days.
A mix of clouds and sun with gusty winds. High near 55F. Winds W at 25 to 40 mph. Winds could occasionally gust over 40 mph. thats local forcast today.

jmir.. i looked at the motors. you cant beat those prices but you get what you pay for.. if i had to go with those set ups i would choose the 3800kv combo. its speced to 20amps/and its speced to run 12x6 props. im sure it would probally give you more performance than stock but less performance than what im running. with out having run there set ups i cant be sure. based on specs though performance will be less than my set up/but more than your current set up.

Tryed flying today.. took up mini edge to test 450bl and typhoon. local forcast said 5-10mph winds.. no prob not the best conditions but flyable. it was another story when i got to field.. both planes battled with constant yaw/pitch/and roll changes.. seemed like i was flying with a constant glitch[
]. yesterday was 40mph plus winds. wanted to test some stuff out with parkflyer edge but didnt take it.. probally was pushing my luck with only one flight prior on mini edge.. and even as good as the typhoon flys they both could have easily been lost today. battled after a few attempts at landings... couldnt get a decent aproach.. finally landed each plane. both in one piece but both were sideways during entire aproach and any rudder correction to get them straight just made them veer offline of runway.. i hate crosswinds lol. i think im done for the season as far as flying and set up testing[

No fun flying on a windy day, fighting the controls the whole time.
Well, move down South! We fly year-round except those days when it's too windy, rainy or too hot!

i was working on edge a little today. another mod that came to mind was relocating the elevator servo directly where the elevator push rod exits the rear of the fuselage. a sub micro would fit perfectly in this area and only require a little amount of cutting with an exacto for a factory looking fit. this would give much better tail response and you could get maximum deflection out of elevator then and also easy adjustments. other than time it would require a 3 to 6inch servo extension depending on servo used. this along with pull-pull rudder mod would really give the plane better response and maximum 3D capability if thats your flying style. not sure how much it would affect CG since my edge is flown with totally diferent set up than stock now(only stock part of plane now is fuselage) with both of these mods you would also eliminate the push rods.. they flex a lot and dont give precise response in both directions. if i had decent flying weather out here id do both these mods and let you know how test flights went and have video and step by step pictures. if anyone here trys these mods please post flight report and pics. thank you.

Hey Get Real /JMIR.
I have not had a chance to try the 12.6e Prop. High winds / Rain I hope to get out this week. I will keep you posted I'll get Filght times on stock Li - Po

bsipro,
Make sure you have the 850KV motor (black) and not the 1000KV motor (blue) before you try the 12 X 6 prop.
I don't think the 1000KV motor can take that big a prop without overheating or exceeding the amperage limits.
See attached specs on the motors.

The UK importer has sold me a motor stripped from a new model - good of them - but - I only got up to the metal part. The PF site does not mention the round white mount in the spares list. Should they have sent me it as part of the blue motor ? I've sent the existing mount and motor off in the mail to someone else but it has not arrived. I think thet have lost it. So, spent money on spares and I still can't use it !!

Hi all. picked up a digital scale over weekend. weighed all my planes and my new heli. my parkflyer edge 540 weighs 22.7 ounces with thunder power 2100mah lipo/e-flite 400 inrunner with heatsink and gearbox and a jr reciever. what this means is if you do modification and use the stock 1800 lipo differance in weight will be very minor but highly out weighed by performance increase. still waiting on buddy to get his new fuselage.. he bought one of my 400 inrunners and we'll be doing mod on his edge also pretty soon. i should have more pics and possibly video how to of conversion. unfortunatley weathers been bad out here for flying and probally wont have any motor performance video till spring.

So far, the conversion to a geared motor, using the awlhobbies.com motor has gone well (the Art-Tech 3100KV motor).
I've had four flights, one of them under windy conditions, and it flew very well. Plenty of power now and I can make it hover, although it is still difficult to keep it going for more than 4 or 5 seconds, but I'll get there as I learn to control it better. Harriers are a snap and I can bring it down very slowly for neat-looking landings.
I have been using the 12 X 3.8 props which would give the most thrust, but they exceed the amperage limits on the motor (16 amps vs. 13 amp limit), so was not going full throtle with the 12 X 3.8 so I wouldn't burn the motor up.
Yesterday, I received the 11 X 4.7 props and I can use them full throtle and only loose about 3 ounces of thrust which is not bad at all. The Edge did great yesterday using this prop, so I'm not all set with the motor conversion.
The motor is available from awlhobbies.com and comes complete with the geared mounting already assembled. I purchased mine on sale for $25. The regular price is $29.95.
I fly very often, so I will soon be able to determine how long this low-priced motor lasts.
Now..... the only thing left to do is purchase a good computer radio so I can better control the Edge with HI/LO rates, exponential adjustments, etc. I've been a good boy this year, so maybe..... just maybe..... Santa will be good to me!!

good to hear its working out. i had my doubts about the quality and performance of that motor package being as inexpensive as it is but if your liking it and not over heating it and getting good power thats great. the power will really help.. it will help in aerobatics as well as being able to power through windy conditions better. update on buddys edge.. he's talking about the e-flite P-47D now.. so not sure if he'll be upgrading his 540.
