OK, here we go. As soon as Cees checks in, the thread goes down the toilet. I was afraid that this would happen and was hoping that it wouldn't. I'll continue the build but won't add anything to the thread until Cees goes away. I was really hopeful that there could be a Taurus thread without Cees butting in, I guess I was asking for too much.

Just click the little red hand at the bottom of his post and he magically disappears. . .
Never looked at that one before... Now that is Almighty Power!

FB,
I'm hoping you'll start this up again sometime in the near future. I've acquired a NIB Taurus this week and like you I'm not a collector. Upon perusing the contents she isin extremely fine shape. The balsa is very fresh lookingand even smells so. The die-cutting is also very nice. This appears to be a very early 70's or perhapslate 60's vintage. It makes no mention of "proportional" gear usage so faras I have looked.Last time I had a Taurus in hand was around 1973. It dented my Sweetater savings but I'll just cut back on the black n tan's for awhile! I posted a few pics in Dave's Tiger Tail resto thread. Thanks.

Great FB, I'll be sure to do that.It was an eery feeling opening the box, I lifted it left to right just like I did in 1973! I really enjoy the build process, and I'm slow, but I'll be using your thread like a guidebook and will post when I get going. I do have to get the TT III done first.Really gratefull to have discovered SPA, the VS/RC (sic) and all you fabulous modelers and RCers.

Hey FB......
Regarding the period correct VECO 61 for the Taurus......
Recently, a guy gave me a K&B 61 which is virtually the same engine with a machined head and replaceable crankshaft prop stud.
It was locked up, no carb and had a lot of time on it....but no broken parts.
The next day I sent it to Clarence Lee and he cleaned it up and rebuilt it for $40.
It looks and feels like new.
I got a Perry carb (small intake) from Tower and it's ready to go.
This version of the K&B is not period correct because the original VECO had a huge o/d prop shaft that required reaming the prop hole..
Also, it had a die-cast head, 2 rings and took forever to get those rings to seat.
The later engines had a single ring.
You should be able to find several locally for cheap.
I dont think anyone would hold it against you for using the later model....even if they noticed!

Dave Harmon,
I have to say the period correct engine for the Taurus was the Veco .45 R/C, unless I am grossly mistaken. Oriiginally, I thought it would have been the K&B .45 R/C but I believe that was rare. After reading the Model Airplane News 1/63 issue the designer Ed Kazimirski mentioned the Veco .45 with a special venturi insert restrictor to improve fuel draw. I would suspect a .61 on the Taurus would make it a rocket. I have almost completed my Taurus from plans and plan on using an OS .50SX for power. Although I do have a Veco .45 R/C I had originally planned to use, however the technology is old, the throttle arm is on the opposite side, and of course the exhaust baffle makes it interesting to muffle. So the OS .50 will make life easier and probably supply more than enough power.

Pretty certain Sledge is right, a Veco .45 was the choice for that "period". I don't think many folks would mind that an early K&B .61 was on her though. I'd prefer a more modern powerplant on mine just to have a higher comfort zone regarding reliability. But, I do have a rather old virtually new ST .46 Bluehead that would do nicely (I think.)

The Veco .45 was introduced around the same time as the Taurus so Ed's choice of the Veco over the K&B was logical as the Veco produced more power. As the popularity of the Taurus grew, larger engines became available. Guys used a variety of engines like the ST .56 an .60, Merco .49 and .61, Veco .61 and OS. 60 Goldhead. So, you have a nice variety of vintage engines to use. Most patten competitors of the time used the larger engines to do the maneuvers required so for sport flying, anything from a .45 up is ok.
