Default Skooter II Remember this model

Does anyone remember this model? We would build two or three of these just to have as good fun-fly standby models. You could build them either as a high wing or low wing model. I have contact Lone Star Models a couple of times, they have the model listed but it's not in production. I was thinking that if they get a lot of calls and request for the kit maybe they'll start kitting it again.

Here's some contact information:

Default Can't even find a picture of one :(

The Skooter was the plane I was trained on.
My training involved plenty of hair-raising handoffs at first, but I am
glad I learned to fly something that required so much attention.
It definitely taught me finesse in landing. (short tail dragger)

Mine was probably 5+ years old when I got it, judging from the paint and fuel/soak level,
but that old plane, and the KB .40 I bought it with, made for some fun times.

I'd put it in the good "second plane"/ first "aerobatic plane" category, I guess.
I would definitely fly another.
If I ever happen to run across some dimensions, I will anyway

Edit... Forgot to mention that yeah, nobody at my club ever heard of one either.
Either that or they've heard of it but can't recall what it looked like.

Default Skooter II Remember this model

This was a simple kit to build, it would be a great club project kit for beginners. I don't know about everyone else out there but building is as fun as flying, and even with ARF's if they break having some building knowlege will really help when fixing them.

Default Skooter II Remember this model

Back in the 80's, the Skooter II was my favorite airplane for fun flies and general sport flying. Over the years I had at least six of them. I always kept a kit on the shelf just in case I trashed one and needed one on a hurry. I flew them with everything from a worn out K&B 40 to an OS 45FSR on a tuned pipe. I found one on the old RCO for sale for $40 and got it together the weekend after UPS left it on my doorstep. I used a new OS 32sx on it and it was the best flying one I ever had. It only weighed 3lbs 4 oz. It flew even better than I remembered them back in the 80's. I added a canopy and a small foam turtledeck and it really looked good. Unfortunatley, it was lost when I got in a hurry at the field and took off with out checking the ailerons. Adding the canopy and turtledeck eliminated nearly all roll caused by rudder so when I took off I had no aileron control and I watched it do a slow roll into the pavement. Sadly there wasn't enough left to salvage for a rebuild.
I have contacted Lonestar many times about getting them back into production. They keep saying they are going to start but I haven't seen any yet.
I'd give $50 for a complete kit if anyone has one plus I'll pay shipping. They only cost 32.95 new back in the 80's.
I prefered the wing with the "kromekote" paper wing covering instead of sheeting with balsa. It went together much faster.
If you hear they are available again LET ME KNOW! I'll take two.

Default Just got off the phone...

Apparently it was the daughter I just talked to, and they're trying to get
Dad to help with some things, so they can get the Skooter II and the Scat Cat 500
into production again. (Setting up, which wood to use, etc...)
The Scat Cat has an almost identical wing to the Skooter II, except the
Skooter wing was about a half inch thicker, I think.

I did find a picture of the Scat Cat... this is what the old Skooter looked like, too:
http://members.cox.net/vasoll/hobbies/air/scatcat.gif
Well, that's what the skooter looks like, if you enlarge the tailfeathers,
and give it a working rudder. No need for rudders on Quickie 500's.

Found an old Scat Cat on Ebay, too. Still no Skooters out there.
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...tem=1753137353

Maybe "Dear old dad" will help them get these kits available again soon.
It'd be a shame to lose these little planes forever.
It's the sort of plane that didn't make you cry if you stuffed it, yet
flew as good as the rest, and better than a lot of them.

Here's a shot of my ill fated Skooter prior to adding the canopy and turtledeck. If I have done the picture right!

This is box stock kit except I made the ailerons from a bit wider material. At the time this pic was taken it also had a pos GMS 32.

I had 3 of them in the old days and it was my favorite plane also. Very stable and I learned a lot with them.

Does anyone know what airfoil this uses?? I'm wanting to make something like this... I have a Scat Cat 500... that I like the way it breaks down for transport... I'd like it better with a thicker airfoil and more control surfaces... Looks just like this scooter.

That's the problem, the Skooter is a simple box type plane, but the kits only had a small contruction sheet which is way short of being full size. If someone has the plane and the contruction sheet they could inlarge the sheet to the correct size based on the completed plane. But then I'm not sure if the drawing of the plane is accually the same as the plane. I could kick myself for not making templetes of all the parts before building the kit.

The wing had an airfoil real close to a NACA 0015. Just a straight 10" chord and a 48" span. You had to add the tips to the Scat cat to get it up to the 500" in requirement for quickie racing. The Scat Cat had the same upper airfoil but a flatter bottom half giving a semi-symetrical 12% as required by racing rules. I still have a usable Scat cat wing but no fuse to go with it. You might be able to take the photo I posted and extrapolate the moments and tail areas from the photo using the span and chord.

I built one and sheeted the wing with 1/8 balsa and it made the wing really thick and I remember it flew slow very well.

Default Hmmm...

Now there's one *I* don't remember.
Do you recall what the differences were?

I looked for one, but ended up running into a lot of Moto-scooter stuff instead

Default SKooter II and 45

I had several Skooter II's..the last one had a piped OS 40VF. A buddy had the Skooter 45, but I don't think I have any pics of it.

We used to fly the heck out of the Skooter II's. I'll post a couple of pics when I get home.

Well from the sounds of things there are a lot of people who had and liked the plane, I think the best thing to do is for everyone to contact Lone Star Models and let them know. See my first post for the contract information.

I have also found a comments area on their web page:

Default Guys????

I just got on the "Lone star Balsa" website, and it appears that you can order the skooter II for 32.95!!! Select the kits section and go to the bottom of the page!!
Craig Rideout

***False alarm, I just got off the phone with a lady who says they are moving from Lubbock and will have the kit back in production in late August/early September.***

Default My (Lousy!) Pic..

Don't know why this turned out so sorry..the pic looks good, and I didn't do anything but JPEG it..HHhhhmmm..

Anyway, Skooter II w/OS 40VF. It was a blast...wiped it out coming out of a down-wind loop with about 6 inches too little altitude. This was one of those crashes where the engine was about 400 ft from the point of impact :stupid:

Nice plane even if the pictures is poor. Does anyone have a Skooter or even the remains of one. It looks like we all liked the plane. I cut form wing cores, if I only had the core templete and a side of the fuselage I could build the plane. I would even cut cores for anyone who would want them.

Default Skooter II Remember this model

I built several Scooter II's back in the 70's.
Have talked to Lone Star, more than once, about
whether they are ever going to produce more kits.
Always got the same answer. Well, I finally got tired of waiting and made my own computer drawing. I hope to have a kit laser cut in the very near future. If anyone else is interested, please send me an e-mail. I don't know just what it will cost yet. But, it shouldn't be all that expensive, based on what it has cost for other planes in the past.

The biggest difference is that my design has an all wood wing. The outline and airfoil are just the same as the old Flite Lines kit.

Default My SKooter II

This is my new Skooter II. I purchased a kit from a member of RCUniverse. I then cut my own foam cores and used the kit as templetes leaving the orginal kit as it was. The wing is sheeted (leading and trailing edge) with 1/16 balsa then I cap stripped between about 2" apart. The out board foam areas between cap strips are then cut out, which really reduced the wing weight. The finish is EcnoCoat, "basmntdweller" I used you covering idea with a little modifications. The plane flies great, using a 25, I'm sure a 40 would really work great.

Awesome!
Nice to see one of the older birds hitting the sky again

I flew my old one on a worn out old K&B .40, and it rocked.

Oh yeah... I called again, and was told "First of next year" again.
I mentioned that this had been the story for awhile, and she said
I'd have to talk to Mike about that... he'll be in, in an hour or so.

I keep hoping... with enough prodding, that they'll eventually start production again.
Oh well.

Default Skooter

If your interested, I cut 5 sets of wing cores and traced the main kit parts out and made copies. I also made copies of the original instruction sheet. To cover my cost I'm looking at about $20.00 + Shipping. The main cost to me is getting the copies made and packaging, the foam and cutting it is not much.
