I have purchsed both size models and plan to use Futaba 9202 servos in the larger model. What are you all using for the smaller model. Are 3001's fine for rudder elevator and airlerons. As you can tell I mostly use futaba but am up for any suggestions.

Thanks,

Mike

You are planning on using Futaba 9202 servos in the GS Edge 540? This is a standard servo that is coreless. These are the servos that you should be putting in the 40-size Edge profile on a 6V NiMH batt. pack to get decent response rate out of those 9202s. That is what I have in my Hard Bet Mk III, which is a 40-size Fun Fly. I would suggest that if you are conserving funds, go with the Hitec 605 / 625 on ailerons and elevator and the Hitec 615 / 645 (the second number is the newer version) on the rudder. Then go with a 6V batt. pack (NiMH to keep the weight down).
Just my opinion.

Hi Mike,
Yes, 3001s are fine but you may want to jump up to 6 volts to give them more speed and torque. Cheaper servos are fine too. On my 540 I will be using s3003s with a 6v NiMH pack. It's way cheaper to buy one $20 pack than 5 $20 servos.

I went with Hitec 425 in the wings. With nose pointing to the sky most of the time no need for anything more. I chose to go with a split elevator set up. I have two 425's in the tail for the elevator. Two of them are plenty of power. I placed the ruder servo inverted in the fuse behind the wing with a pull pull set up. I use a 80 oz JR servo for this one.

You can fast field charge NIMH, but not as fast as nicad. I have a 720 pack and I charge at a rate of 1 amp. Do not like pushing more than that. It takes about 40 min. You do need a charger with a delta peak sensor. Not all chargers with charge NIMH. One of the most common field chargers is the Hobico. It charges at a rate of .750 milliamp and will charge NiMH. Go to Radicalrc.com for more information.

Jerky....i fly my .40 540 with 3004 and a 5 cell pack. with the 4 cell the servos seem too slow and weak but when i put the 5 cell in they woke up big time.

hope this helps.

Default 9202 servos

Kevin, now you've got me worried.

The 9202 is the servo I am planning to use on my big OHM 540. Towerhobbies lists it as a high performance servo with 90oz of torque. It's a little less $ than other Futaba giant servos because of its speed.

Is there something we need to know or will this work for those of us who want to use Futaba?

From Towerhobbies:

SPECS: Length: 1.59" Width: 0.79" Height: 1.40"
Torque: 90.3 oz/in @ 4.8V - 109 oz/in @ 6V
Transit Time: .26 sec/60 deg @ 4.8V - .21 sec/60 deg @ 6V
Weight: 1.76 oz

Default servo selection for Giant OMP Edge 540

Guys,
I'm using Futaba 9201's for the Ailerons and Elevator halves. I run a 4.8 volt 1400 mah pack with no problems.
I have (1) Futaba 9303 on the rudder. I did have 2 on the rudder at first but this was over kill.

I would think the 9202's would be fine for the elevators and ailerons. Give them a try to see. If you need more torque later you can take them out and swap. It's not fun but it's a thought.

Horn selection in my opinion should be no closer to the surface than 3/4" inch. Anything closer and you loose torque/leverage.
I like the Robart horns with clevis's. It comes with 2-56 or 4-40 clevis's. I use 4-40 of course for the Giant.

Default Flutter and 225 Servos

Hi Chad, what did you do to work out the problem with the 225's and flutter? I've been in the shop and not online much.

Thanks,

JW

Default I was wrong!

I stand corrected Guys! I am not sure what I was thinking when I stated that the Futaba 9202s were not enough for the GS 540 Edge. I checked on the Futaba website, and it states that they are 76 oz-in torque on a 4.8V, and 90 (something) on 6V. One thing that I didn't understand that Futaba states that this servo is slower response rate on 6V (hugh?). I thought that the 9202 was nothing more than a coreless std. w/ BBs - but I was wrong! I guess that I am just human . I will research bebore I open my BIG mouth!
Sorry for any confussion.

Kevin is right on here. You will put LOTS of force on the elevator and rudder. After stripping not one but two rudder servos, I moved to hitek 605 (and my rudder is sealed). I also put a 605 on the elevator. Watch out if you dont!!! Remember your gonna beat this sucka a whole lot!!!!

i finally ended up moving the clevis farther away from the control surface to give it more of a lever advantage and the problem was solved. i figure that with the slack of a metal gear (typical) that it was just amplified with the clevis real close to the control surface.
