Well I bought a new glow plug for the Saito and I'm gonna reset the valve clearence per your suggestions (thanks), set the low idle back to factory setting and test run it again. If I can get it to run up to full speed correctly I'll put it in the Cub and lift off.

I need an engine cowl for the Cub but may fly it without a cowl to maiden it, (see how the Saito does before fitting a new cowl to it).

I looked at the Goldberg site and mine does look like their 76.5" Cub however my wingspand is 68.5". Someone said it may have been built as a "Clip Wing Cub" and the Goldberg websight did not say what the wingspand for clip wing is?

Oh well, for $75 already built with flight pack how could I go wrong!!!!

You couldn't go wrong at that price. Go ahead and maiden it without the cowl. Install the cowl after you get the kinks worked out.
It's a hassle to pull the cowl on and off.

In light of what you said about the wing, I suspect it is a "clipped wing". That's ok, they still fly great.

YOu are headed down the right path. You will have that Saito humming soon. Just don't get in a hurry. Check everything twice.

Practice taxiing and , get comfortable with that and then fly. I always have my instructor give my planes a final check before their
initial "maiden" flight. Most of the time I let them fly it first and trim it and then I buddy box until I am comfortable.

Saves planes, that way.

Good luck, keep us posted.

Jim,

I already flew my Hanger 9 P-51 PTS (with all the training stuff on) with absolutely no problems. Other than I tore a landing gear off AFTER I LANDED in a ground mole hole or something[:'(]. I don't think I will have any problems with flying the Cub on the maiden and trimming her. I'm not in a club (yet) but have visited some. I fly at my house on my 37 acers. I don't have a really good landing spot but the driveway is long enough for short takeoffs (at least for my foamies, Nextar and P-51).

You would probably think I'm nuts for flying were I do at my house especially after only about six months experence. Trees, barns satalight dish, house and an ocasional vehicle. But my landing strip (front yard) is pretty clear but pretty rough and a little short for Nitros. I own a back hoe and plan to make a long and smoooooooooth landing strip soon.

Regarding your cub, I have built all three versions of the SIG Cub, it does not look much like a SIG kit to me.

iron eagel

I've got to get some better pics on here and figure out who made this so I can buy a cowl to fit it. The wingspand (about 68") is close to a Goldberg clip wing verson. But, when you look at the building manuel for the GP it looks like that could be it.

Oooooooooooooh Well, slap the Saito in it and fly her without the cowl. Maybe I won't like it[], maybe it will crash[X(], maybe it won't fly at all?

If non of the above, I'll buy a cowl later. Anyway, it sure looks good hanging in the garage.

thanks

Well got the new plug in the Saito and started it up per everyones suggestions and it runs good, not great. I set the idle screw even with the throttle arm (metal arm) got the high end adjusted and did not need to readjust the idle at low end, idled fine. It transitions relatively well to full throttle and run a couple small tank fulls through it on the test stand. A couple times she died at full throttle. I beleive it was because of the full tank setup on my test stand sucks[:@] but I'm not sure.

Sooooooo I will rebuild my dads 50 year old test stand with a better full tank setup. Should I mount the fuel tank level with the engine?

This engine still scares me that it will quit on me during its maiden.

You want the mid point of the tank to be about even with the spray bar of the carb. Unless you use a uniflow 3 line type of setup for the fuel feed. Which is what I have in my cub because the engine is inverted and I can not set the tank that low.

Where you have a back hoe, and plan to make your own runway, perhaps you might want to consider setting up your own charted flying site...

Iron eagel,

Uniflow 3 line setup? I'll google that one for sure????

My flying site is a little narrow for a really good flying sight for bigger planes. I'm in a valley that is only about 800' wide, but is as long as your need with no trees or obstructions over the ends. 800' sounds like allot but thats a little tight when at 850' your in the 60' tall trees or over my house.

The guy that lived there before me use to land some kind of a real low wing plane in there as he had a makeshift runway. The runway (or what was left of it) was overgrown and partaily flooded when I moved in so I plowed it under and planted corn on it.

For now and with models I may just do a portion of the old runway if I can figure out proper drainage.

I may buy a real airplane someday and reconstruct the runway with a small portion of it very smooth for models.

A Uniflow set up has two clunks one about 1/4 inch shorter than normal. The short clunk is used for the line from the muffler, the vent is used only to fill and is capped during operation, and the normal clunk goes to the carb.

The link above was posted to by the author (John Pavlick) of a article in Fly RC that had a write up on the system.
