Default Cheap-O Cox engine combat?

Hey,

Earlier this week I was at the local funky closeout store and picked up 3 Cox Comanche free flight helicopters (with starting kits for 10 bux each, not bad for the engine eh?).

What I was thinking was that myself and 2 other friends remove the motor from the heli and put them on a cheap plane to combat.

I'm thinking it must be foam, and ideally should be incredibly simple to remove the radio and power system from the plane to install on a new one when the 1st bites the dust.

I have experimented hacking a Norvel .061 engine onto a Toys R Us foam plane, but was wondering if you guys have any better ideas out there.

I'd expect we'd use the .049 engine, micro servos, eg HS81, and some smallish rx pack and rx (wrapped in tons of soft foam).

Thanks~

Default Foam Combat 1/2A

I'd say keep looking at the cheap 5 dollar foam planes for your project. The best quality foam glider I've found was sold at KayBee toys here in our mall, I bought out their stock of 3.

ALso...
If your looking for something a little less conventional. Look at Home Depot for Pink Foam and make flying wing's out of it. Just use 1 inch or 3.4 inch thick pink foam and shape the leading edge.
1/8 ply firewall, packing tape covering and balsa control surfaces...and away you go!!

Check out James Mack's page for some ideas!

Have fun!!

Default Best foamie?

Which plane was it at the K-B? I have found that no one store will have the same stuff for long, so just wondering.

I used the American Airlines foamie for the previous project (attached). I know this is popular with the electric flight guys, some even using this plane for indoor flying.

The plane (below) after MUCH MUCH bashing

Default Name of the Foamie

The Plane is called the Ultra Flyer.
It doesn't have a swept wing and has better quality injection than the "airliner" look-a-like.

Made by Life-Like products.

Tower Hobbies has them

Default I'm building one of these

I think this is even easier to make than the Ultra Flyer.

Only I'm using a Norvel .61!!
Yippie!

High Flights.

That doesnt look like a .61, or even an .061 for that matter (sorry, hehe)...

I would consider making my own jogs and templates to hot cut my own design, or a modded design by someone else.
I actually found that there is a foam cutter here at my school, tho a project I used it for last year yielded poor results. I imagine I would have to mess with the wire itself or the tension to get good cuts.

For combat, is that GWS rx ok? I use one on my Piccolo and Mini Max just fine, but I'd be wary to put one on a combat plane with a nitro engine, (Tho that price is awfully tempting, but best not to risk it).

How did you ocnstruct your plane CrazyHerb? Got plans anywhere?

Default Pic is actually from other guys web site

Hey Kitsu,
The pic is actually not of my plane...
Mine IS Norvel .061 powered. I will post a pic later tonight.
That pic came from

http://pease1.sr.unh.edu/aew/rc/CheapStealth/

I just took 3/4 inch thick pink foam and shaped the leading edge with 80 grit (more down on the tips to create the washout).

Took me a whole 3 hrs (taking my time) ready to fly...maybe this weend.

Standard servos 280 mah pack and 2 oz dubro tank.

Span is 36 in length is 24. I just tested the CG with nose weight till it glided nice across the yard. THEN cut elevons and put radio/engine on. That looks about right method (TLAR).

It's a lot of wing for a little motor but I put like 2.5 inch elevons on it...so should be able to bite it's own tail and have "glider" like traits.

It's just all fun....
High Flights!!

Maybe this is agains the TLAR method, but when you shaped the wing, were you thinking at all about a specific airfoil? or just going at it til it kinda looked like a wing?

Like I said, I do have access to a wire cutter, so I could do some sort of more definied foil.

As for servos and such, I'm guessing the cox .049 could do well with a 1oz tank and micro servos (we don't want to have to fly the plane for 15 mins on a full tank with no way to land early).

Default TLAR and Airfoils

The wing is only 3/4 inch thick (18mm) so there's not much to work with even if you had a hot-wire. The rest is just flat foam board the whole way.

Here's a quick drawing to give you the idea.

Not a lot of science or math to it....it just works.
