Default dragonfly 4 beginner needs help...

Greetings all,

I'm new to this hobby, and recently bought a dragonfly 4 (the cheap 4-channel one). I've read through the instruction, but have difficulty in starting the flight.

The instruction saids when I switch on the heli, the main rotor won't start. Then I should pull the throttle to the lowest position, then switch on the transmitter. I did the same, and almost got my fingers chopped off [&:]. The sec. I swtiched on the heli, the main rotor spins.

Learning from that mistake, I switched on the transmitter first, pulling the throttle to the lowest position, then switched on the heli. But same thing happen, the main rotor will just start spinning. Is that normal?

Being a newbie, I thought I'm over reacted with this, so I tried the transmitter, checking with the servos etc. The servos are responding correctly, but when I play with the throttle side (mine is on the left hand side stick), the main rotor will just spin with the same speed. Is that normal? I thought the main rotor will synconized with the tail rotor, cause the instruction manual said as i pull the throttle up, the tail rotor will start to spin as well.

Anyways, I took it back home and play around with the connection, and the original connection doesn't seems to be wrong. I've burnt the tail motor while I'm trying things , how should I get a replacement tail motor?

anyone has good experience with this dragonfly 4? I read the description and it saids its very user friend, but I just can't get anything from it working right.

Basically the main rotor will spin at full speed as soon as I switched on the heli (with the transmitter switched on and lowest throttle position, highest throttle position, or even switched off). And now I also can't get the transmitter run in computer simulation mode.[]

Make sure that the 3D switches arent on. That will make it spin fast. I ordered parts for mine form hobbyjapan2000.com and got the stuff quick.

Thanks for your response Radioflyer [8D]. Where is the 3D switch though? I'm completely new to RC flyer, know nothing about the fancy stick controller.... and the dragonfly instruction certainly doesn't help []

BTW, does the main rotor of your dragonfly 4 rotates immediately after you've connected the battery? I thought the mian rotor rotates only when you start pushing the throttle channel upwards...

There is no 3d switch on a FP 4 CH helicopter TX, or it's not wired anyway.

Look on the back of your handset, check that the 3rd dip switch is to the right.

Most importantly, take the blades off before you hurt yourself!!

thanks gordthebiker, I've double checked, the 3rd dip switch is to the right.

So should the heli main rotor rotate at all at the lowest throttle position? I have an impression that it should not, but mine does... actually it looks like its at full speed, and i've basically tried everything, including pushing the throttle fully up and fully down, playing around with other control as well... etc, but still no luck.

I'm thinking maybe i've a faulty "circuit board", which sort of combined the receiver, mixing, and other things together in one.

I just tried my heli with the main blade off, but the small short blade on, so that i can tell the speed. and now I'm sure the main rotor is just spinning at full speed, regardless of the controller, whether the throttle channel (ch 3) is lowest, highest, moderate, or whatever, even tried switching on the heli with my transmitter switched off. If i disconnect the main rotor's motor, then the tail rotor will responding with my ch 3 position though, which i think is normal (pushing up will start spinning the tail rotor). i've also tried other control, the servos are working and responding correctly, so does the rolling left and right (don't know what does that call).

Basically I have no control over the speed of the main rotor... does that means something is wrong with my circuit board? Its like 35USD... maybe i should get one?

Do you have matching frequency crystals in the transmitter and reciever, could be a possibility?

i've checked the frequency crystal, but they do match, and other parts seems response correctly, just the main rotor.

emm... i'm still not sure if the main rotor will spin if the throttle is at its lowest position... anyone has any ideas?

go on and reverse the channel which is for the throttle..... your throttle channel is reversed, try intead of full down, make it full up and try and switch the battery on, probably won't spin right, and as you move down it spins.... well you got your throttle reversed....

thanks for your advice cosmospho. i have however tried that too, but it still spin at full speed. it is however good to know that at lowest throttle, the main rotor should not spin. i'll look into the circuit and see if there is any switch to make adjustment... if not i guess i'll just buy a circuit board.

i don't know the first thing about this dragonfly . it is the 4 channel model..
anyway for some reason the tail motor quit working, but if i put small battery to it ,it will spin so i think the motor is ok? is there some other thing that would keep the tail motor from working? all the connections are plugged in ok. oh, i can't find an OFF switch on the heli. so i plug and unplug the battery for on and off.

is that the gws dragonfly.. ive had one for a while never could get the silly thing to work i blame the radio they shipped with it..anyway might be able to help you.

rule 1 ANYTIME SOMTHING IS WRONG WITH THESE LITTLE HELICOPTERS TAKE THEM IMMEDIATLY BACK TO WHERE U BOUGHT IT.
id say 30% are not built right or are out of trim or have some issue that makes them not work. take yours for example......

now remember ive never flown a heli just paid over 200 for one that don't work but if i had to guess i would say that your sppedcontroler/gyro is wiered backwards. does the tail engage if you move the heli from side to side is the tail even spinning.. check to make sure that the people at the factory didn't accidently plug the tail motor into the main and vice versa

hope this helps

but most of all ITS DEFECTIVE TAKE IT BACK or at least try

all i can say is it was all ok.then the tail motor just quit , i got it off the ground once for about a foot,
it was doing ok . then when i went to take off again the tail motor quit...it (tail motor) wont work with the radio but, it spins if i hook it to a battery..

Hey

I have a dragonfly, It flys very well. When you turn the heli on it should not rotate at his own.

By the sounds of it, your 4in1's speed controller for the main throttle channel is either damaged, or simply not working correctly. If you're getting full throttle regardless of stick input, then there is something wrong. It's likely the 4in1 is damaged. Walkera has lately made some changes to their 4in1's, not sure what it was, but they burn out VERY easily now. They used to be a bit more reliable. I've gone through 2 (newer) 4in1's that i've purchased for one of my other micros. The original one I got from the first Walkera helicopter I got is still going strong without any problems. Infact, i've been using it for so long I even managed to fatigue off one of the battery connectors that goes to the 4in1 PCB, I had to take the whole thing apart and resolder it . If I had to guess what happened for you, i'd say it was this;

You got your helicopter, plugged it in, and the main blades spun up, likely because of a reversed channel. As such, you grab the blades to try to stop the helicopter from taking off into the roof. However, by grabbing the blades, you also stopped the motor from spinning, causing an enoumous amperage spike to the ESC, which likely damaged your throttle ESC. This is how I damaged my first 4in1. Luckily, I simply told my seller about it, and he got Walkera to send me a new one, free of charge. A quick way to check is to just sniff the area the wires come out of the 4in1. If you smell burned electronics, you got a busted throttle ESC.

There is, of course, one other possibility for the problem. Something may have become disconected on the throttle side of your transmitter. It doesn't hurt to open up your transmitter and make sure everything is connected on the inside. Although, if your tail is responding to throttle changes (without you actually moving the helicopter) then I don't think it's your throttle channel.
