RE: L39/Wren 44 Pics and video
Guys,
Put two more flights on the L39 today.
The afternoon was windy, but the plane was rock solid.
I had two 9 minutes fights. At the end of the first one, both tanks were dry empty.
I guess when I killed the turbine, the pump was draining the pipes out.
Great plane, great engine.

Yann, you're absolutely right. I put on another 6 flights on mine yesterday in perfect conditions, flat calm, clear skies, 22 degrees and the model flew absolutely beautifully. At the end of the day, due to sun position, I was flying the model at 45 degrees to our nornal flight line and I could see that during the last flight EVERYONE in the pits was watching this little model do its stuff, it seems to have a magnetic effect on people. Wren performance, as usual, superb !

How do you guys end up flying so much in a day !!! Do you have your private field ?
Where I fly, it is very crowded during the weed end...
How many flights do you get on one charge of the pump batt ?
The most I did was three.

Hi Jack,
Working on my own little MW44 project , with two 12 oz shampoo bottles in the wing roots. What exact tank fittings are you using with your plax bottles? Are they like the Festo fittings shown in Swissflyer's photo?

Hi L.Turner, I am using tank fittings from B&B Specialties, They are listed on the web site as tank fittings and come with three fittings and a nice felt clunk . You will need two packs, they are around $8.00 US. They are not like the 90 Degree Festos that Swissflyer is using , I could not find the Festo type. I have been told they work well, Jack.

I know it is a very daunting task but I would suggest you read through the whole thread if you haven't done so already. You will find all you need, and some, on these pages.
Plax bottles are one option, Netto shampoo bottles are another, graupner tank is another. I have used the 2 latter ones in my L39's and both work fine. The Netto bottles and Plax bottles are very similar iin configuration and I would choose one of these as they allow one tank to completely empty before the second tank starts to empty.
Good luck and happy building.

Gary,
"on command" is not satisified with this setup.

I use the springs to obtain enough preload on the wheels to stop the plane when at idle as per the AMA rules.
For RC fixed wing aircraft: The model shall be able to come to a controlled stop on
command with the engine at idle on a level hard surface.
This little jet slows down nicely without brakes but to meet the criteria, the springs work well.
Many people read into this rule that a turbine must be equiped with brakes. If you can come to a controlled stop on a hard surface you meet the criteria. It is also good to maintain stationary at idle.
The amount of drag on the wheels will still allow it to take off on pavement. When flying on grass, I adjust the wheel collar so there is little or no tension becasue it is not needed.

FYI...MY nose wheel brake "on command" on my Reaction 44. Activated by a Hitec 32oz servo. Works VERY well.
"The AMA Safety Committee has reviewed the matter was unanimous on their determination that rule #6 indicates that a means must exist which allows the pilot to "command" the model to stop rather than simply allowing it to coast until it runs out of forward energy, either by distance or some form of drag inherent in the wheel. That clearly implies that some form of brakes are required which can be activated by the pilot during taxi and landing. The term "on command" appears to be the relevant point. The other points, including the type of brake construction, distance of roll, etc would not seem to be relevant."

RE: L39/Wren 44 Pics and video
I came across pics of the full size L39 that Savex used to paint mine after.
The plane looks kind of dirty, so I decided to weather my plane a little bit.
Dave did it first, and I have to admit that it looks really cool.
I think the panel lines and rivets show up much better now.
It's not finished yet, but it's taking shape.
Any comment is welcome...
Dave, have you maidened yours yet ?
I would also like to know how the plane lands with the Sandor type of oleos.
Eventhough I'm really happy with those that I made, I would like to compare the two setup.
I think oleos really make this plane dead easy to land.
Yann

Touch-up Paint
Anyone know the best paint for touching up the paint work. It would be nice to get exactly the right tone and deptch of colour.
Thanks

RE: L39/Wren 44 Pics and video
I have now read all threads up to page 50. within all the chit chat theres a lot of useful information from knowledgeable flyers concerning the build of this combination. Pity there was not more videos in there of the L39 doing some good landings. I have just started the build. hope to have it ready for late summer.

I will at some point.
How many L39's have you had so far? Are you on your third still?
I saw your trio pictures - have you had all three flying at the same time at your club?? hee hee

RE: L39/Wren 44 Pics and video
I need help!
I have had an L-39 for almost a year and haven't flown it yet.
Let me tell you what has happened. I put an autostart MW44 on it but cannot get it to run. When I installed it I accidently reversed the gas and fuel line. I corrected the problem but still no luck. I then found I had a servo that was interfering with the RPM sensor. I corrected that. Now when I try to start it it goes through the start sequence but then heats up over 800 degrees and shuts down.
I emailed Wren about three weeks ago about the problem. Sara emailed me back about a week later and told me they needed more information. I emailed her back and haven't heard from them since.
Does anyone have any idea what I should do? I had problems with a MW54 overheating. There was a problem with the combustion chamber. Sara said they didn't think this was the problem. Am I using too much gas or do I possibly have a leak in my fuel line? It seems to sputter as it begins to run on Kero.
Thanks for any help.
Hal

Short answer would be to mail Sara again, very rare that you don't get a reply, guess its just an oversight.
Long(er) answer:
I also had issues (think i spoke to you about them) a while back with starts being long and hot, but found i was just heavy handed with the gas valve after removing the restrictor that was causing me problems by not letting enought gas through! Went from one extreme to another! I was sent a "medium" restrictor to put in my gas line, and after starting 3 times in the back garden last week had some of the fastest and easist starts ever from the little beauty, could hardly believe how quick and low temp they were.
Would suggest less gas, and check for leaks in the fuel line from shut off valves or other connections...easy to spot bubbles in the clear tube, otherwise ask for a medium restrictor to put in your gas line to stop you over gassing the engine.

RE: L39/Wren 44 Pics and video
I have had one 'hot'start caused by starting after refuelling with the fuel tap accidentally left open. However, this was not too hot and it was obvious what had happened.
I have had a couple of hot starts caused by too much gas. These hot starts are HOT and the temperature rapidly increases (I have easily had mine over 800 with too much gas). I agree with J.F. that too much gas is probably your problem. I am not sure of the setup of the 44 autostart (mine is manual) but would try reducing the gas (by a restrictor or by closing the valve a bit if it has one). You can tell if you have restricted it too much as it won't light. In normal starting this engine uses VERY little gas.
