Hey Mav,
Whereabouts in Sydney are you Mav?? I have an 1800 you can see in action, unfortunately it's not in an aircraft but it'll give you a good idea of what the JJ's can do!!
Cheers,
Smithy.

Hi guys,
I have been following this thread with great interest. I am primarily a glider and electric pilot and am contemplating getting a turbine. I have been to a few jet meets in OZ and like the smell and the Speed!! Only problem is to fly there is a min 2 hour travel from Sydney. Even though this is the case for me, I am thinking if I flew at say 2 to 3 jet meets a year this would keep me happy
Now I am contemplating the JJ1800 in a Fly Eagle F16 and would welcome any comments??????? Unfortunatly everyone I have spoke to sais stay away from JJ turbines???
Yes this is my first post, so sorry if off current topic.
Cheers,
Mav

Heads up happy JJ owners
Just heard about the Jet Joe turbine wheel that lost blade(s) at full monty [&:][:@][:-] It only takes one blade lost at 160,000rpm and balance and integrity is totally lost instantly. Luckly it was in the air safely away from any humans, babies or dogs etc, etc. just trashed the turbine and put the jet plane at risk due to the dead stick.
So Joe used to make his CCs with SS instead of inconel that didn't last long [&o][&o] a very bad call for early customers like me. I'd have a guess the inconel being used in China is scrap[8D] recovered, for casting which isn't then really inconel at all [>:]due to the missing rare essential metals. Also the balancing by taking deep cuts into the turbine wheel and ignoring the sacrificial ring is just the poorest engineering practice.
Heads up warning this can occur in the pit area at start up! so follow best practice guide rules and keep any watchers well away. Metal fatigue and poor casting voids is only detected through NDT and there isn't any QA/QC in Joes factory.
Yeh I was a JJ owner, posted on this thread right at the front pages with Easytiger about myJJ turbines and paid $4000 to Joe. I'm a little wiser now, a GTBA member, owner/builder who has seen the light or that should be seen the inner snafiu metal workmanship first hand.

Jet joe is just a big s_h_i_t. [:'(]
I ordered one jj-1400 and one jj-1800.
Jet joe anunce jj-1400 weight at 2.5 lbs / 860 gramms > reality 1150g
One was dammaged during shipment (rear cone)
A fadec data terminal k.o. (not tested)
Rust appeart on pump not stainless steel!!
kerosene leaking on the second pump.
Not x-ray certified turbine!!!!
The bearings not precharged on jj-1800 due to the 2 o-rings (1 is enough)!!!
Finaly very poor contact with jetjoe china!!!!

Goldcoast,
I am sure he will replace the rear cone. When did you receive your turbine? Mine is due here in a few weeks. The flightworks pumps are used world wide by other manufactures also, so this is not a JJ pump specifically.
Let us know how the engines run please. Can you weigh the JJ1800 and post also.

I flew my Topgun Mig29 powered by a JJ1800 and it flew very well. Our club field is 800 feet, all grass and it took a little less than half to get airborne. My airplane full of fuel weighs in at 22lbs. I'm using a Tam bifurcated pipe. I'm not sure how much thrust I'm getting but it sure is a lot to be able to fly my airframe with authority at the weight I described. I use to have a Wren 54 mk11 in it and performance was marginal so I put a JJ1800 in it. Overall, I'm completely satisfied with my engine. I bought mine from Gabe and Mark, the US Jetjoe reps.

Drive out the silver pin in the clutch this will let the outer part slide off. Use a pinion gear puller to remove inner part of bendix from motor shaft.

Jet joes
I really thought this thread was quiet with JJ turbine fin parts letting go at 160k rpm, but there is a bit of life here yet. Then I've thought it over and its much like having a MDS, we all know their were crap right early on but until it dies or dead sticks into terra firma run it. OK but bits coming out at 160k the force is monumental so in the pits at start up, like they say on Hill Street Blues you know the risks be careful out there.

As suggested use a puller it will distroy the old can motor, not problem, refix with preferred liquid metal onto new motor pinion

Still hammering away at Jet Joe and improving your reputation, huh Paul.
Some things never change.
FWIW - Here in the U.S. , the JJ's popularity grows by leaps and bounds.
Glad to see you back Paul, keep up the good work.

Really? I'm curious, how did you arrive at that conclusion?
I've only seen two JJ and neither would run up to full power, one shutting down because something let go inside.
If you love tinkering, JJ's for you.
If you want to fly on a regular basis, well, you get the idea.

Jon

Cant seem to get the clutch to lineup properly, tends now not to release and at about 25,000, the ecu senses the motor is still engaged and shuts it down. Have moved it in and out with no luck.

Try unscrewing the cap that holds the starter motor. That is how you adjust the clearance. Also, don't use the ECU to set-up the starter clutch. Quickly plug and unplug your battery directly to the starter motor. That way you can try small adjustments to set it up. It took me about 10 minutes and 7 or 8 tries to get the clearance right. There is a bit of slop in the JetJoe starter bendix. I found this aided and compenstated for misalignments etc.

Unfortunatly it is not as easy as that, been at it all day yesterday, it is very difficult to see if it needs to go up, down, left, right etc

Well now it comes to moving the legs in the cowl. Grab and yank....
Well now it comes to moving the legs in the cowl. Grab and yank....
I mounted my own starter motors. What i did was to place the cowl on a flat table. Place masking tap where the legs of the motor contact the cowl. Then, using a square, eyeball the stater motor being square to the table from several directions. Now, mark the center of each leg on the masking tape. Measure the marks from table top. Average then out and remark this new location on the masking tape. Drill new holes at these locations. Done carefully, I found it get the starter darn near perfectly square to the impellor.
Good luck,
