Absolutly the right way to go if you have the UC before you start work on the wings, unfortunatly I tried to get a jump on the build and only realised when it was too late. LOL still an easy job to make good, seeing as I am thinking of cutting the wing in half and permenatly attaching the inside portion to the fus so the UC does not have to be unpluged all the time and neither do the tail struts and tailplane, this will mean only the aileron servo to disconect when de-rigging, just a thought at the moment, if I do this I will proglass the wing as well and give it a full respray with the airbrush my wife does not know I know she has bought me for Christmas.

Three pics to show the centering pin position on the retracts, this should have come with your set, its a plastic unit that fits over the retract square pivoting arm.

Mike
Thanks! That plastic piece did NOT come with my 700 series Spring Airs![:@]

what colour is your falcon?
Errrr.... I don't have a bigger Bobcat, just the little Nitro Planes 50. I have a Supersport but it's not in a Falcon 120, it's in a bigger scratch built model painted white/orange US Navy trainer style, great visibility.

A friend has a Falcon 120 which will be his first turbine model. He will be stripping the covering, repainting & fitting it with a Wren 54 Mk 2. Should be interesting. - John.

I am assuming your retracts are flat mounted as per my photograph, if they are bulkhead mounted they wont have the plastic unit they work on a different principle.

Are those the offset struts from Behotec? That install looks good.

Trailing link legs of any type are the best thing for flying from grass they take the rearward inpact of bumps and lumps and don't transfer so much loading into the airframe.

Any of you guys with a JetCat P80 installed could you let me know how you distributed your equipment in the fus to get over the extra weight of the JetCat, I am just about to start the re-build of the internals and need to know what I need to do in relation to positioning the gear.

Thanks

Hi, been working on a new disgn for a retract that has a servo mounted on the retract for steering. i have been using pull pull steering on all my jets, works ok with air up air down, but using spring down retracts , when it is tighten the cable for the steering sometimes it wont lock. my disgn has no pressure on the retract stoping it from coming down to lock. the only time the wheel is able to turn is when its is locked into position. the strut is actually turning in the trunion new design makes it easy for nose retract to retract fowards or backwards. just mount the retract, plug in servo and airlines and your ready to go. a friend of mine asked me to make him a tail wheel retract for his P-51 that will retract fowards. this design will be able to work as a tail wheel retract and steering.

Has the servo some kind of shock protection between it and the strut?

How does the servo turn the strut or trunion? What is the servo horn connected to? Very great idea by the way!! Can you take the servo off and snap a few shots of the top of the servo and also of the top of the trunion with the servo off?
Thanks

I was thinking more about the steering loads from the strut into the servo rather than inpact loads.

the sturst turned by a 1/4 inch rod inside the trunion

the servo can only move the strut so far, if the strut try's to turn the servo past that point the load will be on the frame of the retact not the servo

So when the servo is in the center all the steering left and right shocks go into the servo gear train?

The designer lives about 15 miles from me and I have seen the design which is very clever.

As designed and when the gear is down the steering load (servo rotation load) would be the same as a pull/pull setup with exception of cable stretch.

There is no vertical load on the servo no matter how hard you land. Well … maybe if the landing was hard enough to break things and jam the gear through the wing the servo might … uh suffer. With gear up steering simply does nothing.

Are you currently attempting to protect against steering loads?

I also live close to the designer and being in this hobby for over 47 years, I must say I am so impressed with both the vertical shock absorbing and the trailing link design of these struts. I am currently working with him to build me a set for an AT-6 that will take care of that forward sweep in the gear and give it the needed shock absorbing that it needs. Someone else said it so well , these triling link design helps to take out all the little and sometimes BIG imperfections in these grass runways that always seem to catch your gear unaware and impart sometimes dratic loads to the airframe. We have all seen someone leand a Warbird maybe just a little hard or fast and at the same time it decides to find the only minature pothole in the runway. I hope you keep up thr great work on these, as they have so many possibilites and uses ! Kudos to you !

Thinking about this, some of the car steering servo arms have a built in clutch to lessen the loads of steering impacts, is there enough room to put one of those on the servo?

In my days of electric RC car racing the gadget to protect your steering servo from lateral jolts was a SERVO SAVER.

Spring loaded to resist the impact and protect your servo

I was going to post a pic but there are loads of different types now - so dont want to confuse the issue.

I also think that a direct drive to the servo is asking for trouble - constructive criticism, thats all.

Looks an excellent idea though!!!

In my opinion a clutch could work.

It is unclear how much additional protection linkage offers a servo. Gear knee action is important to protect the servo gears from potholes. Up/down spring action also goes a long way to protect servo gears from potholes. I would guess the knee and up/down spring is more protective than most current setups.

More test and operational time usually brings changes to any design. I would expect the design to go through an evolutionary period as weather permits. The weather has been uncooperative for the past 30 days.

In addition it probably would not be complicated to move the servo to another location and use linkage for steering. The installation would not be as clean and it would be necessary to mount the servo and make linkage. A standard analog servo is probably sufficient for steering. Analog servos seem to be springy under any circumstance.

Thoughts here are mine and not the designers. But if servo gear breakage occurs I am sure the design will change.
