"Also I'm thinking I am going to go with the new Futaba BLS451 Brushless High-Torque/Speed Servos"

Thanks that looks like a good servo.. and for $99 buck with 147 oz on 6v ...cool
and if you need more on eleavator... theres a BLS351 for $149 with 208 oz on 6v.. good stuff from futaba

by the way I'm in love with my 7ch module.. it's flying my 30% extra 260 electic (4100 watts) cermark F-16 EDF (3400 watts) 60 sized P51 (1500 watts)
park flyers.. T Rex helicopter... hundreds of flights now... no issues at all!!

Yep
Seen the 10 advertised, looks like good value.
I just felt i would like the extra channels for future projects.
The 12 FG gives 12 proportional channels and 2-switched digital, it also works with all the different rx types.
Not sure about the 10, it would be good to get a look at the full spec.

My 8 channel RX should be with me tomorrow.[8D] so i can have all my models on FASST now
Inwood in the UK have the 8 Channel RX's and the 8 Channel tx modules in stock for the 9CAP and 9ZAP

Get them while they are hot!

When used with the TM-8 module, then no, it does not (according to the directions). I have not tested it with the TM-14 module on my 12FG, but with this TX/module, you use multi-channel mode which is supposed to have failsafe on all channels...

Busy day today, L39 and Hawk both converted to 2.4 FASST

The 8 rx is amazing, really tiny [X(]
Anyway, it all went in perfectly, the TX is a dream to program, very intuitive to use.
I enclose a pic of the Hawk and L39 install.
The Hawk is easy, it is a bit bigger than the L39, so I just glued 2 plastic tubes to the side of the fus.
Th eL39 is a bit of a challenge; there is so little space.
So I put a ply plate across the canopy opening and glued a tube along it. That takes one Ariel.
The other tube was vertical and stuck up into the cockpit, so...... I put a plastic pilots head over it
The Hawk is almost exclusively Hitec servos, I had no issues with the 14 channel rx,
No Futaba servos in it.

Weather, may be OK tomorrow, so I will hopefully fly both and report back

hi Paul

I am new to this 2.4 stuff , is it ok to only have the end each aerial vertical and horizontal as in your hawk?

Hi Ian

Yes it is OK.
The only part of the wire that is the aerial is the last inch or so.

The aerial wire is coaxial cable, which is screened.
If you look at the wires the screen is removed on the end of each one.
The unscreened bit is the aerial.
Hope that helps.

It is done...[8D]
This morning we loaded the car in a blizzard, a good 3 inches of snow and dark skies.[>:]
As we drove west to Oxford the sky cleared and eventually sunshine!

It turned out to be one of the best flying days we have had this year
Cold but relatively calm and what wind there was was down the runway!
I range checked the FASST 2.4 on both the L39 and the Hawk and all was well.
I have one issue with the 12FG, how do you do a power on range check?[]
Let me take you through it.

The TX will not allow you to go to low power for range checking if it is already radiating.
You have to turn it off, boot back up, when it asks if you want to transmit you say no, then you go to range check in the menu, select it and you get 90 seconds before it goes to full power.
This is OK for power off, but…if you start the turbine with the radio on full power you then have to turn the TX off….which will stop the turbine!
If you start the turbine on low power you waste a good 30 seconds to 1 minute before you can range check, so there is no time left.
In the end I elected not to do a power on range check (not something I like).
Futaba need to attend to this in the next firmware update in my opinion.
Other than that I can not fault the radio, best set I have ever owned.[8D]
So, L39 first.
Now no excuses left, …….final check of all functions and open the throttle [X(]
All I can say is it was a total non event
The FASST system worked perfectly rock solid ....beautiful
The response is definitely slightly quicker; I will increase the expo for future outings.

Flight over and fire up the Hawk, final check and roll, once again, perfect rock solid radio link.
Well-done Futaba (apart from the range check issue) the best radio ever IMHO.
Apart from the Jetmache 44 my current jets now have no whip aerials……right….where is the Sabre kit.. [8D]

Happy days.

Test flew the Boomer XL in the rain and sleet and snow with the 14MZ FAAST setup.

Absolutely fine. So we can cross snow off the list of possible interfering substances

Paul, glad you had total succes with your tests but I have a doubt.

From what I have read and even known from the Spanish Futaba distributor the main reason for the 90Âş antenna rule is to keep both antenas as far away of each other as possible but in your instalation the antennas are certainly to 90Âş but close to each other.

Main point here is everything went well but if you have some contact in Ripmax, perhaps should be best to check with them as, as always, is better safer than sorry.

Again congratulations for your tests and best regards.

they also state it not good to cross the coaxial cables.

http://2.4gigahertz.com/index.html

With that the only thing left to "do" other than installing the receiver and setting the antenna in place, is to perform the "Easy Link" function. It is important to note here that the R607 and all the Futaba 2.4 receivers have 2 antenna and they should be oriented 90 degrees to one another. The actual antenna are the uninsulated wires at the end of the 2 coaxial cables. It does not matter so much where the coax is as long as they do not cross. The key is that the unisulated antenna wires should be affixed at a 90 degree angle to one another. There are plenty of great pics in the instruction manual to illustrate this.

Jesus
I agree in principle with what you say however the aerials should not be close to a source of electronic noise or metal parts.
It can be difficult in a tight space to get them at 90 deg and a long way apart.
I have spoken to Ripmax and they agree that it is better to have them closer together than close to metal or noise source.

Chief
I cannot find any reference to not crossing the coax section of the aerials.
Quite honestly I cannot see what difference it would make. The cable is screened over its length so there should be no effect.
What they probably mean is not to not cross the aerial sections at the end of the coax, that makes sense.
I have discussed this with Ripmax and they are of the same opinion.

I will look into the mounting of these aerials in general and see what I can come up with.

My experience with the Futaba FASST system has been very good. The 14MZ with 6014S Rx has been performing very well in our Jets. This is also true for JR Spektrum module and 9303 2.4GHZ radio. My words on 2.4GHZ are on positive sides

Ok
I have had a look at my original install of the aerials on the Hawk and decided I was not happy with it.
There is a good point in trying to get the two as far apart as is reasonable, but also away from metal or electrical noise.

I was also unhappy with the lack of support of the coaxes from the rx box to the aerial tubes.
See below the changes I have made.
The result is
1) Further apart
2) Supported better.

There are a few points that should be remembered.
1) This is a micro coax cable; as such it is relatively fragile compared to what we are used to.
2) Excessive pulling or strain on the wires could damage or even break them.
3) Avoid pulling on the wires, it could break the joint to the rx pcb.
4) Avoid sharp bends.
5) Support the cables as much as possible, especially on a prop model. This will help avoid resonance from vibration.

I still think there is an 'elegant' way of doing these, just got to find it
As this is new to all of us perhaps you guys would post your installations?
We can all learn from each other.

Flite Metal's website has a report on the impact (or lack of) the metal on 2.4 systems.. Appears to not be an issue at all. I'm interested in this for my Ziroli P47 which I plan to finish with Flite Metal & put a 12FG FASST in....

Not sure if anyone has addressed the TX balance problem yet, if not here you go. All the parts you can get at your hardware store. 1 Package 2 ½” flat corner braces and a pack of 1 ¼”Closed S hooks. As you can see in the photos I left a little tab on the top of the bracket, I did the prototype without it and it seemed to put a lot of side force on the TX strap post. The tab will push on the face of the transmitter and put the force outward on the post. I would leave the bolt through the transmitter post a little loose so it can move freely on the radio. The bolt that goes through the S hook you want to tighten solid. You’ll also find that you can move the S hook for some adjustment in the balance.

Paul,
Your antenna installation looks good to me. I just finished installing a 2.4 FASST rcvr in a NexSTAR trainer. Like you, I oriented one antenna vertically and the other antenna at 90 degrees horizontally. With the thinner fuselage, I placed the antennas on opposite sides of the fuselage so that one antenna would always present a large 'target' to the transmitted RF signal in nearly all flight attitudes. Many concerns about 2.4 rcvr antenna installation would be resolved if Futaba would offer the option of longer coax cable leads to the receiver. For example, if you could order a receiver with 12 inch low-loss coax cables, this would greatly increase your choices of antenna placement and orientation. Routing the antennas away from other wiring, fuel tanks, metal, large gas engines, and jet turbines would be greatly simplified. I don't think the multiple receiver approach is necessary, but more options and flexibility for antenna placement would be advantageous...especially for jets, giant scale, and models with carbon fibre fuselages.
Regards
JC
