Just taken delivery of this beautiful aircraft. some of the scale details you guys put in is superb!


build will be slow and steady! (first composite) although i am being assisted by Dave so hopefully all should be well

Power will be from a Jetcat 160. Guidance from Futaba 14sg linked up to Powerbix Cockpit SRS.

Not to forget the PB smoke pump! cant have a red arrow without smoke

Another Hawk just finished for a customer, expertly assembled by M&R's finishing school expert Roger.
Tidy simple install with minimal bling to keep weight down, this has a PB Mercury with the gyros. Will be set up in a JR 28X and has a JetCat P-140Rx for power. Derjet cockpit, it will have the Tailor Made decals and det cord added soon.

This has been a great thread! I got my Hawk a week or so ago and hopfully it will be ready for the maiden next week. It's used, I am not a super builder... LOL.

Unless I don't remember, how does the Hawk handle stalls? My goal for the Maided is to take the Hawk to altitude, practice some stalls and slow flight. Then bring it back down for some approaches and over shoots to get a good feel for how she flies on approach and in slow flight.

What I have learnt from the thread is that it doesn't like high alpha, and that the best approach attitude is a nose down attitude and then flare to get the nose up on touch down.

I will also set the CG to 205 from the start, and it's already pretty much set up that way anyway.

Like any swept leading edge wing when it finally breaks-away its quite sharp...but you have to be hauling on the elevator to get there.
Yes, let the nose drop and flare in ground affect. You can hold it off for a few seconds with a slight nose up sit.

I am sure I saw it somewhere, but can you guys tell me where your "neutral" elevator setting is?

Flew mine today, it fly's good but the struts are to soft and it acts weird , it squats when the brakes are applied and has suspension like a dirt bike with no shocks . whats the fix?

I centered the elevator trailing edge at 5mm above the hatch line for the elevator access. I think that's what the manual calls for . I also set the CG at 7 7/8" back from the wing fuselage joint.

depends on the balance point to a degree, at the manual safe position, 5mm as Karl says, at 205mm it's 4.5mm, underside of tail surface, top of fuselage rear hatch.

Karl wrap the leg and spring with electrical insulation tape half way down- about 4 layers

I will have the CG set at 205 as that seems the best that everyone prefers. So I will set the elevator to 4.5 and start from there.

Did you guys find that you need dual rates? Or are the stock throws good for all phases of flight?

Dave , That's the answer? do they make stronger springs? Dhc6, I don't use any expo so the ailerons where a little sensitive on the first flight so I reduced them by 15% on my end points and they felt great and still has a good roll rate. the elevator was good .

It works. There are more than one version of the leg, some have a down stop machined in, mine are the originals and the lower section can go over 90 degrees! I just don't do heavy landings and its not been an issue. Airtech do have different wire diameters depends what you have if anything heavier is available. The Ultra Lightning spring might work, think that is 2.1mm wire

Most people fly with expo, depends how your brain is wired. Start with the manual settings and adjust from there

I saw that in the manual but as Dave pointed out with a further aft CG the elevator neutral position will not be the same as it is with the CG set to the recomended.

Ok I will start there with a little expo in the ailerons. I would rather it be not sensitive enough to to start with rather then overly sensitive.

I have flow it a few times already, however I have to start from a clean slate to re-program the set up. The previous owner has a great set up with his Jeti and I copied to mine however there are somethings not the way I prefer them. So I will start fresh and just wanted to see how guys are flying it now that it's been out there and flying for a while now.

Dave , the electrical tape on the struts seems to work , I put 3 more flights on it yesterday. I ordered the 2.1 springs from Erwin so I will make it work until they show up. Thanks for all the info in this thread.

Another CARF Hawk is ready for operation at our local grass site club. This Swiss scheme version was again assembled by M&R's favorite builder Roger (this being the 5th he's done for us) Owner Sam is pictured with the JetCat P-140Rx powered model just after hand over. As always the final check over and turbine test was done here by me. Test flight is scheduled for a meeting we have next friday ( perfect timing before a trip to JetPower, so Sam can start thinking about what next ;-) )

I'm getting ready to start a F B Hawk build and ran across this probe. It really looks great and was wondering if this can be made to order or information on how it was done. I had mine done in the Redhawk scheme and this would look awesome on the nose. Thank you for your time and any information will be greatly appreciated. Ken
