Default JetCat Accessories/RS 232 data cable/GPS, etc

i would like some feedback on who uses any of the following and what you get out of it.

if i understand this, you can get 51 hours of downloaded data from the ESU? accurate statement?

http://dreamworksrc.com/catalog/prod...oducts_id=1634
http://dreamworksrc.com/catalog/prod...roducts_id=280

ive seen lots of stuff about JetCat GPS, but can find no place to purchase. are people using this and how easy is this to impliment?

i have an EagleTree FDR and telemetry system-i am interested in putting this in a plane, but of course concerned about installing yet another EMI source (900 mHZ) in a already challanging environment.
the EagleTree has a RS 232 connection cable from ESU to the FDR. never tried it.
also, i have a really small 10mHZ GPS module from EagleTree. i use it with their little Elogger in an electric plane, but wonder if there is any way to incorporate this as a GPS source with the ESU.

any crazy thoughts on all of this?

thanks

Joe,
it is correct that you can download parameters from the JetCat ECU with the software from JetCat.
However, I would suggest not to use the original JetCat cable for this, it is way to expensive, and it's a RS232 connector (not many labtop's have RS232 any more). I use this from Digitech: http://shop.jet-1a.com/product_info....oducts_id=1576 much easier as it plugs directly into the USB port
The GPS module works fine, it will show you travelled distance, max speed, max G load (not very accurate as it is calculated) etc.
JetCat also has a Air speed sensor (will show max speed, travelled distance etc)
Values from both the GPS and airspeed sensor will be shown on this module: http://shop.jet-1a.com/product_info....oducts_id=1619 whick can be left installed in the plane
The GPS and airspeed module should be available from JetCat or one of their distributors (I got my GPS and Airspeed sensor from Digitech)

its pretty simple

plug the cable
make sure windows uses the drivers from jetcat.
if not change the driver
check what comport its using if its to high (more then 5)
go to hardware / change the comport to 4 or 3 or so even if it will tell you its used.

In all honesty Sandor, that wasnt a very clear explaination - can you clarify ?

come on you must know how to use window$?

my best guess is you plugged the cable and windoze has installed the driver?

go to windows / properties
click on hardware (usb cable must be plugged)
you see in the comport section the cable driver
change that driver and you point it to the jetcat driver *.inf
after this dont let it restart , click on the properties again
go to advanced
change the comport to com 2/3/4/5
after this it should work fine
the jetcat software finds his own comport

OR

plug the cable
go to properties / look for the cable in the comport section
uninstall / unplug the cable
plug the cable / it wants to look for the driver in windoze/update
dont let it instead point it to the place where the jetcat drivers are.
still check the comport if its not to high(>5)

1st, i have one of the cool data screens from digitech-bought 4 of them from Todd (little closer than Sandor-and glad to see Todd carrying this product) and gave some to my friends. Didnt you design it? very very clever. not a complaint, but an observation-it would be nice for a slightly thinner cable to the RJ-11 jack-its very robust and kind of long-maybe in the future one that is 8" long and if we wanted to extend it we could make our own extension.....just a thought.

i think it is really cool-it would be cooler if i could get it to stay on one screen after start since i don't necessarily want it to scroll when i move the thrust lever back and forth-i want to see that 1st screen! i dont think that there is a way to do that, or perhaps that is an undocumented feature

i think both Sandor and Todd sell the same cable.

i have yet to see a place (now i will look at Sandor's site) for the GPS. no interest in the airspeed sensor.

would really like to know about anyone using the EagleTree ESU connection. that would be pretty nifty.

thanks very much for your response.

and, you get all 51 hours off of the ESU when you download it? gotta get one of those cables!

Hi Joe,

I also have several of these data screens. Must say, it was very easy to cut the cable to length and re-solder it to the unit.
It looks like the soldering tabs at the backside had been designed big enough for anyone like me with little experience in soldering for doing it right.
I would prefer this option of cutting it to shorter length more than to consider an extension cable one day...

Just my 2 eurocents...

Nicolas.

ah. i will have to not be so lazy and take a look! on my next build, i have plenty of room to hid the extra cable, on the current model, not so much.

i like the flat cable as i have a large number of RJ-11 ends and a 11 dollar crimping tool to make telephone cables of what ever length i want, but it only works with flat cable.

i appreciate your advice.

have a great weekend

Thanks for the nice words
Joe, there is currently no way to let the display stay on one screen during "engine run", it switches between two screens, basically showing the temperature, battery voltage, pump voltage, set/actual RPM and fuel left/consumed.

I find it quite nice to be able to at least see the temperature, battery voltage and the restfuel/consumption, I tend not to look at the set/actual RPM anyway, but if I understand you correctly, you are interested in the set/actual RPM.

I made the two screens as a compromise, there is a ton of data to show during runtime, but I cut it down to what I (and looking at the feedback from a great bunch of guys on this thread: http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_9525286/tm.htm) thought would be the absolutely minimum, and that would "cover" two screens. As it switches between them fairly quick I think/hope that it is no big problem to wait the 2 1/2 second between switches ?

It is much worse in Idle mode (engine stopped), there is a bunch of screens, but there you (typically) have more time to wait for the data you are interested in....

Regarding the cable, its correct, it is a bit "sturdy", it is some that Sandor gets mounted, but I think that they are quite good, and much better than many flat ribbon types. Again it's a compromise.
The solder pads are made BIG so that it should be easy for people to change/shorten the cable

Hope it all makes sense

Joe, you write that the screens change when you move the throttle back and forth, maybe I misunderstand you, but that is not how they work, the display will change between the two screens at a fixed interval, and this has nothing to do with the throttle position

i think (know) that i didnt make myself clear. yes, i did understand that it "fast switches" back and forth between the two screens. and i also know that you did get a lot of great input-i watched that thread for quite some time so while i lurked and didnt provide input, i did like what i was reading which is why i purchased 4 of them!!!

what i was thinking was, when running steady state, then switching back and forth between screens makes sense. when i change the throttle and i am "requesting" a particular RPM but have not "achieved" that RPM, THAT is when i want to see just the one screen to monitor RPM and overshoot, time to spool, etc).

maybe that could be an update to the SW that could be flashed from my laptop.

i havent figured out how to mount mine yet (and i gave 2 of them away to friends) so, and shot of how people are mounting these?

have a great weekend all.

Ahhh,
now I understand Joe (if you had written it in Danish, I would have catched it much quicker ) !

This is actually a nice feature! I will look into that in a new version of the display, when the set and actual RPM differs by more than a "certain amount" the display will stay on that screen, once they are "close", the switching of screens will start again

The display is not directly "updateable" in the field, but lets see if we can come up with an idea for that
