Pete,
I never tried a Forstner bit for those holes. I always use a sharpened brass tube in a drill press. Works great. I bore the holes all the way through but if you see how Don Szczur did the ones on his VF-3 you might want to give it a try. He only bores the hole about 3/4 of the way through. This is much neater than going all the way through (you don't have to blend the hard point into the control surface on the top).
No, not me. I just can't cross over to the Dark Side... I bet an OS 160 on 30% would pull a VF-3 just fine.
Seriously, I may pick up a YS 170. I'm going to run the crap out of it on the stand before it goes in an airplane though.

I've used the brass tube method and as long as you keep the end of the tube sharpened it works rather nicely, but there is nothing like a nice sharp forstner bit in the drill press. Besides, once you own the bit set you have them for a lot of other projects and they cut much cleaner than a spade bit.

Pete/John,
Up until the airplanes because really large, the OS 1.40RX was a great engine. As the planes got larger, it simply wasn't enough. I truly love my DZ's..however, i hated running the older YS stuff. My brother owned them, and thankfully he had Mike McCormick to keep his going in NC. The OS 1.60 is a great engine...it does not have the power of the DZ's....or more importantly the torque. It still has the 2-stroke power curve and it will work, however, the DZ with a V3, or electric with a V3 definitely work better because of the torqure curves of the engines, let you fly at a much smoother pace.
Pete you also tried to get me to switch to the pizza box transmitter....that one didnt work out so well...I think I'll keep my 14MZ...

Arch, just like in the movie "What About Bob" it'll take baby steps. First YS next Multiplex.
I like Futaba just fine, but they don't offer the flexibility of the Multiplex EVO unless you want to spend over $1000. Do I need to share my favorite picture?

Hi Pete,
Have you seen the new Evo Pro? It has some nice features and the mixing is no longer a global change...
Looks like they will do upgrades to existing EVO's too.
Cheers
Jason.

I have read about it and talked to MPX USA at Toledo about it. It looks like the EVO Pro is available in other parts of the world right now but not in the US. As soon as MPX USA offers the upgrade I will send mine in for it. The upgrade involves some hardware changes do there is supposed to be a nominal fee as opposed to the usual firmware upgrades we can download for free.

Pete,
Don't forget - I used to wrench Harleys. I have a '72 Sportster here with 100K miles that only leaks a *little*. If anyone can get a YS to run I'm sure I can. LOL
I'm going to get a 170 DZ and run it on a test stand. If it's as great as you guys say, I'll order another one and put them in my VF-3's. If not - you'll hear about it. VBG

Well after hearing what happened to Anthony's VF-3, I figure better safe than sorry. There's nobody in my local area that runs YS so I'm going to have to do this on my own. I'm sure everything will work out but I know there's a bit of a learning curve. This should be fun.

hey all...
I am kind of thinking I may sell the V2.2 that I built and never flown. Pictures here. http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/fb.asp?m=7288549
a full on scratch build and custom painted in 9 colors and cleared to perfection..... all of my v2 thread posts here are build pics of this plane...
I've just got too many Black Magics - When Mike comes over to my shop it's like he is in Black Magic heaven...
It's probably worth more to me than what I maybe offered. I am just really wrapped up in the VF3s right now and just don't know if I'll ever fly it....
I just want to order 20 cases of CP 30% heli and don't have a couple grand on hand at the moment..

maybe I am just thinking out loud.... but I need to burn 20 cases before july !!!

Too many planes? Sounds almost as bad as having too much money or too much se#! Sucks to be you dude! Now I really feel sorry for you! LOL
But yeah I hear ya. Fuel is a major cost consideration. If you have "extra" airplanes then I guess you can consider them a source of potential income. That is one sweet 'Magic and I know it's built to the high level of "Deaniac" O.C.D. standards. Let someone else enjoy it if you're not going to. The V2 is a great flying airplane. I'm sure it will make someone VERY happy. If I weren't working on new stuff right now I'd drive out there and take that puppy off your hands.

the cool thing is I can do an electric conversion and make weight, it would be close but the plane is super light. the wing panels are 10 oz complete ready to cover. and the complete painted fuse is 2 lbs 14 oz... I could dremel out about 4 oz at least cause it's built for a dz
I also need a little money to finish my second "concourse" vf3.
I am looking at everything I've got here collecting dust. It's a fine plane and would has brought me a lot of joy just building her. I am sure it would fly well.
yea I guess it sucks to be me LOL !!!!

okay I guess I am feeling better, I starting thinking about how well the v2 handles high winds, and how pretty this plane is, I decided to keep it continue painting the wings and stabs, maybe make this one of my concourse entires. I am still flying Mikes old concourse v2 with a 140 L in it now as my back up . and when I put my two new planes side by side, well that is a million dollar smile in my book....
Seriously I have been flying the blue v2.2 with the YS 160 and that is a really sweet combination with the APC 18.1x10 prop. The plane really grooves with that prop, I was flying a 12 inch pitch and was always too fast, the v2.2 seems to fly best with 10" of pitch. If your flying the 140 DZ cut the prop down to about 17 1/2"...
thanks all for putting up with me !!!

yea she's under the table. She is okay, I'm not neglecting her, I've been doing a little winter upkeep and I'll be flying her... I've got a 140L in her and she is my back up and local club field flyer now. When I am done with the yellow v2.2 I am going to do a complete restoration and send it the the Black Magic wing of the Smithsonian...
