What engine mount are you guys using with the YS110? Are soft mounts needed? I ssme the stock mount would work perfectly if using the OS120AX, but the ys110? Thanks.

I'm using a "HydeSoftmount" (have several)---I've never heard a SERIOUS argument against reducing airframe vibration---

My OS 120 FS is mounted in my Venus on a Dubro vibration mount. After over 200 flights everything is still tight and no cowl cracks. I WOULD NOT mount a 4 - stroke in an airframe such as this without some kind of soft mounting, JMO.

Don,you don't need to worry about vibration now for many months.

Hope your trip was pleasant.

I used the stock plastic GP mounts for the OS 1.20 4-stroke. I have quite a lot of flights on mine with no problems. Seems to me that the plastic has just enough flex to dampen vibration.

Makes me wonder if the soft mounts and nose rings are really necessary on the 2-meter pattern planes. On the one hand you have the soft mount that is supposed to dampen vibration and on the other hand you have the nose ring that transfers vibration back into the airframe. I wonder if the glass-filled plastic is a better resonance match than the expensive, heavy and complicated soft mounting systems.[sm=72_72.gif]

The Hyde-type mounts are designed to absorb rotational vibration. The nose ring is there to support the nose horizontally and vertically since the main mount alone would have some pretty interesting modes through the engine's operating range. Basically these mounts are intended to absorb the power pulses which are rotational and opposite to the propeller's direction of rotation and much stronger in 4-strokes than 2-strokes. The nose rings support and limit the engine's resulting motion to pure rotational. Without the nose ring, the resulting motion would be very chaotic. They really work in smoothing those pulses out and reducing overall wear and tear. DO you NEED them, not really I guess but the airframe, electronics, and servoswill thank you in the long run.

It's been my experience that if you do enough flying, sooner or later you will have vibration induced fatigue issues (cracked cowls / cracked canapies etc.)---"Hyde Soft Mounts" greatly extend this timeframe---FWIW

To fit this airplane into a modern small car ( purchased to save fuel and reduce atmospheric pollution) we have to slide it through the tunnel formed when we lower the back seat.

So how high is the tail section?

My first one came out so nice I was commisioned to build another. OS120 up front and weighs 8 1/2 lbs. ready to go. It's going to need 2 1/2 oz. in the tail to balance out. I tried to talk the guy into a Saito but he wanted an OS. Oh well. It's gonna fly nice...

From the bottom of the tailwheel (Sullivan, the stock one sucks[]) to the highest point on the rudder is 14-1/2 inches.

Thank you, gotta love this internet brotherhood stuff! Don't know how I would ever figure that out.

My Venus II started it's life with a Saito 125 in it. After 20 flights I got tired of the poor performance of the 125 and put an OS 120FS in it. It now works as I thought it should at first Different strokes for different folks.

Earlier Diver09 reported his set-up with a YS 110 but there were not any follow-up observations that I recall. Firsthand reports on this would be quite interesting, I would imagine.

One of the club members has a Venus 2 with a YS110 mounted inverted on the stock mount and an apc 15x6 prop. He has 140+ flights on it so far and it performs beautifully. I maidened my Venus 2 last weekend using a Saito 125 mounted inverted on the stock mount with an apc 16x6 prop. Once the idle circuit was leaned out the motor idles at 1900 rpm and peaks out at 8900. I've got 5 flights on it and I'm quite pleased at how the plane handles. The setup is:

Saito fa-125
apc 16x6
hitec hs-5645s mounted at rear of fuse for rud and elev and on ailerons
stock tank mounted behind firewall
6v 1650 nimh batt mounted right behind tank
cg set at 61/2 in. no extra weight needed
3/4 oz added to rt wingtip for lateral balance

I haven't weighed the plane yet.

I have the Venus II with a YS110 and hatori 721 muffler. Excellent combination, fast acceleration and uplines with a APC 14x10. Unlimited vertical with 20/20 fuel. I have 3 servos in the rear and the muffler under the wing, and it doesn´t need any weight.
I really love this plane, great for learn and practise pattern flight, also I am using it in my club´s intermediate competition with great results.

Well, I've built two of them now and they're pretty consistent. Both needed a little over 2oz. in the tail to balance and each weighs about 8 1/2 pounds.

Engine OS120
Servos Futaba 3004's and 1-3010 in one and JR DS-821's in the other. Three in the tail for both planes.

Al, I assume that was the 1.20 4-stroker?? Did you do the angled mount w/standard muffler?

Tempted to buy another of these myself since they're now $220 at Tower!

All this talk about the YS 110 has got you thinking

My used 110 that I traded my NFG 125 for is sitting at home waiting for me but I won't get a chance to try it until at least April []

Yeah. It's the 4S 120 mounted exactly as shown in the instructions. It came out really nice but needs about 2 1/2 oz in the tail to balance @ 6 1/2". The Saito or YS110 yould probably not need any ballast at all. THe OS engine is REALLY heavy. I'll post a couple of pictures once I get the graphics on.

Ha! I actually WON the plane I built for the rally auction!!! Woohoo!!! OK. Who wants the Futaba 6EX and OS 120? I need to fund a Spectrum receiver and YS110.

How many tickets did you buy?![sm=wink_smile.gif]

Good lesson there to always do good work; the plane you build may be your own!

I bought 12 tickets. The funny thing is that the builder's won the airplane at least four times in the 25 years we've put on the contest. I'm donating the radio back to the club for a workers auction (I'm a Spekrumite) and don't really want the motor. I hate OS 4-strokes, lost two planes over the years to them sputtering and quitting at the wrong moment. YS all the way man!

Luckily, I built it like it was mine but that wasn't outta some fear that I'd actually win it. 8-)
